HOME INVASION ARRESTS

As reported on http://www.sltrib.com, on August 22, 2000:

"A home invasion in Salt Lake City late Sunday ended with the arrest of four men, who were held for police by the resident. At about 11:55 p.m., as a man and his wife were asleep in the basement of their home in the 300 North and 1000 West area, the four allegedly broke in by kicking in a back door. The man ran upstairs and struggled with two of them. He was struck on the back of the head with a baseball bat, and the suspects fled the home and got into a van. The victim got a gun and followed. He fired several shots and ordered the suspects to not drive away. His wife had called police, who arrived and booked the four into the Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of aggravated burglary. The man was treated and released at LDS Hospital. Police say the robbers mistakenly thought the man was someone who owed them a drug debt."

What is interesting about this case is that:

  1. One armed citizen was able to apprehend 4 obviously violent criminals with only one gun - without shooting anybody. Just ONE gun was able to strike enough fear in the hearts of four criminals to make them all wait to be taken to jail in the middle of the night.

  2. Had the man had a triggerlock, he'd probably not have caught any of them and may even be dead.

  3. Had he been completely unarmed, he'd likely be dead or at least quite battered. And NONE of the criminals would be in jail.

  4. Had the man been more prepared, at least a couple of the perpetrators would have been the guest of honor at their own funerals.

We're also glad he didn't actually hit any of them when he shot at them outside his home. That action would have been tough to defend in court as his life was not in immediate danger once they were headed away.
