Cobb County police are searching for two men involved in a home invasion robbery that left an accomplice dead.

Three men, at least two of whom were armed, ambushed a 21-year-old man about 10:30 p.m. Saturday as he entered his Mableton apartment, police spokesman Dana Pierce said. They pistol-whipped the man and took him, his 65-year-old mother and a 5-year-old girl the mother was baby-sitting to the back of the apartment. The woman and child were not injured, Pierce said.

As the robbers started to leave, one of them tried to wrest the 21-year-old's coat from him. The apartment resident managed to grab a gun he owned and shot at the robbers, striking one of them, Pierce said.

"There were multiple shots exchanged between the perpetrators and apartment dweller," Pierce said. The apartment resident was not hit.

Pierce was not sure how many shots were fired. The three thieves fled, but one died of gunshot wounds in the hallway outside the apartment. Pierce did not know how many times the man was shot. The two other men fled in a white car, Pierce said.

The slain man is described as black, 5-foot-8, between 130 and 140 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. Police think he may be between 16 and 20 years old, with a "peach fuzz mustache." He was wearing a gold cross necklace inlaid with about 100 diamonds, Pierce said. The other two robbers escaped with money and jewelry.

The apartment dweller was treated at the scene for minor injuries from the pistol-whipping, Pierce said.
