Fugitive is shot while attempting burglary

WACO, TEXAS -- Waco police arrested a man Friday who was reportedly shot as he climbed into the window of a Waco residence.

The shooting happened about 10 p.m. Thursday at a house in the 600 block of North 14th Street, said Waco police spokesman Dennis Kidwell. The property's owner told police at the time of the incident the house was vacant, but he had decided to spend the night there after learning of previous break-ins, Kidwell said. The owner told police that he heard someone opening a window screen, Kidwell said. The owner said he and a friend struggled with a man who was climbing through the window. He said he shot the intruder during the struggle.

The 19-year-old suspect ran away before collapsing in a yard several houses away, Kidwell said. The man was taken to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center, where he was treated for a gunshot wound to the hip, Kidwell said. The man was released from Hillcrest and was then arrested for burglary by Waco officers. Officers determined the man was wanted by the Beverly Hills Police Department for forgery, escape and evading arrest, Kidwell said. Further information on those charges was not available Friday.

The man was taken to the McLennan County Jail where he awaited arraignment late Friday.

It is the policy of the Tribune-Herald not to release the name of anyone arrested before they are arraigned.
