A grand jury has decided not to indict a Baton Rouge woman who shot and killed a friend she mistook for an intruder.

The grand jury last week declined to charge Kim Northern, 744 N. 29th St., with second-degree murder in the death of Adrian Shorter. Second-degree murder is punishable by life in prison.

Northern, 24, shot and killed Shorter, 25.

Police have given this account of the Aug. 16 shooting:

Northern was awakened about 2:30 a.m. by a noise outside her house. She got a gun and called 911.

While she was on the phone with the police dispatcher, the intruder tried to get into the house by pushing in a window air-conditioning unit in the bedroom where her 3-year-old son was sleeping.

She shot the man once in the chest. The sound of the shot is on the tape of Northerns conversation with the dispatcher.

Northern told police she did not realize Shorter was the man trying to get into her house. Police didnt arrest Northern in the shooting but referred the case to the East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorneys Office.

Prosecutor Aaron Brooks said the grand jury routinely reviews cases involving unnatural deaths.
