TOPEKA, KANSAS -- A shooting that left three people hospitalized late Sunday was the result of a man retaliating against the invasion of his south Topeka home, a police spokesman said Monday.

Hector Macias Jr., 21, of 2539 S. Kansas Ave., used an SKS assault rifle to shoot two men and a woman who allegedly broke into his home and robbed three people there, Lt. John Sidwell said. The injuries of the shooting victims were not considered life threatening Monday, he said.

Sidwell gave this account of the shooting:

Shortly before 10 p.m., three people -- identified by police as Reginald E. Newman, 36, Jason D. Fields Sr., 20 and Alice Gueary, 21, all of Topeka -- knocked on the door of Macias' home and then forced entry. The three then assaulted and robbed two women and man who were in the house.

The robbery victims, two of whom lived at the residence, received minor injuries. Two children, aged 1 and 2, also were in the house at the time of the robbery but were not injured.

During the incident, Macias emerged from a back bedroom with an assault rifle and shot the three robbers, who then fled.

Two of the wounded were found within a block of 2539 S. Kansas Ave. An American Medical Response ambulance dispatcher said conditions of both were considered critical as AMR took them to St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center.

A male victim was taken by private vehicle to St. Francis, Sidwell said.

When police arrived at the shooting scene, they seized marijuana, two handguns and an SKS assault rifle from the area, Sidwell said. All were found outside the residence at 2539 S. Kansas Ave. Another gun was seized from the private vehicle that took one victim to Stormont-Vail.

Police were trying to determine Monday if the crime was drug-related, Sidwell said. No arrests had been made.

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call detective Ron Gish at 368-9411 or Crime Stoppers at 234-0007.
