DALLAS, TEXAS -- A 41-year-old Carrollton man was shot and killed early Sunday after kicking in the door of his ex-wife's apartment, Dallas police said.

Authorities said the woman's husband shot Anthony L. Austin on the doorstep of the couple's apartment about 4:20 a.m. in the 18900 block of Lina Street in the Denton County portion of Far North Dallas. Mr. Austin beat down the metal door after repeatedly calling the apartment and threatening the husband, police said.

Police said that Mr. Austin had previously threatened the man, whose name was not released. Mr. Austin's friends told police that he wanted to ask his former wife to keep their child an extra day so he could go on a trip. Mr. Austin and his ex-wife divorced in 1995 and had been involved in an "long, long, long" child-custody dispute over their 11-year-old daughter, who was home at the time, said Dallas police Detective B.J. Watkins.

Mr. Austin, who had custody of the child, was not armed but had been drinking, police said.

No one else was injured in the shooting.

Mr. Austin's ex-wife was granted a protective order against her husband in 1995, records show. It expired the following year.

She and her husband could not be reached for comment Sunday.

The case will be referred to a Denton County grand jury, police said.
