Police consider seven of the 2006 homicides, including Lamb’s, to be unsolved cases but have made arrests in only five of the other homicides. Police have sent evidence in five other cases to the prosecutor’s office to decide whether to file charges. Officials consider at least one case to be self-defense. |

"The violence has prompted Atlantic City hookers to arm themselves," Mr. Parry reports.
I scanned the whole story, interested to find out how easy it's proving for the East Coast ladies of the evening to arm themselves for their own defense. Way down in the ninth paragraph, I read of "Christine, 37, who works out of a cheap motel on Pacific Avenue near the entrance to several casinos," who "bought a canister of pepper spray after the bodies were found in the ditch."
That's it? A can of pepper spray?
Comments: I know the choir is reading this but when is someone (Wayne, Allan, are you listening) going to really do something about this type of anti constitutional garbage. |

Licenses to carry concealed weapons will start to be issued Jan. 1, 2007. The law became effective July 1, 2006, over the Governor's veto. In McPherson County, there were 53 applications as of Dec. 1, according to McPherson County Sheriff Larry Powell, whose office supplies and initially processes the licenses. According to Powell, the process has not created a large demand on his department's manpower. The required procedure is for his agency to accept the completed applications, fingerprint the applicants and forward the applications to the Attorney General's Office. That office then completes a background investigation before the license is issued. |

The escape of two masked men making their getaway from a Queens bank disintegrated into a bloody gunfight Saturday when they tried to hijack a car from an off-duty policeman. Officer John Lopez was shot once in the thigh after he leaped from his car and chased the men down a busy city street but he returned fire and seriously wounded his attacker, police said. |

"...in direct violation of their duty as citizens of the United States, contrary to the laws of their country, subversive of its Constitution, and having for its object the destruction of the Union--that Union which, coeval with our political existence, led our fathers, without any other ties to unite them than those of patriotism and a common cause, through a sanguinary struggle, to a glorious independence--that sacred Union, hitherto inviolate, which, perfected by our happy Constitution, has brought us, by the favor of Heaven...."

It is always good to end the year on a positive note. It's not going to happen this year. Not after you read this. I want to share an open letter with you, written by Richard Pearson, president of the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA). It deserves to be read by every Illinoisan who fishes, hunts, target shoots, collects firearms, runs dogs, rides horses or any other outdoors recreational activity. |

One of 2006's most remarkable hap penstances was that the sports media, for the most part, wasn't particularly shocked by gun stories. That a starting NFL lineman - the Bears' Tank Johnson - was arrested for a second time with an assortment of assault rifles, and that his bodyguard and close friend, a man with felony convictions for drugs and guns, was shot dead by a reputed gang member - with Johnson nearby during an early morning nightclub hassle - should have made huge news outside of Chicago. But it didn't. |

And Hyde said that although he supports a person’s constitutional right to bear arms, he favors restricting assault weapons.
“The purpose of a gun, assault weapon, is to fire a lot of bullets in a hurry,” he said. “I don’t see a hunter wanting to do that nor do I see someone protecting his home by having assault weapons.” |

Here are some basic rules included in the concealed-carry law.
When asked, you must tell a law enforcement officer whether you have a conceal-carry permit. In some cases, the officer may ask where the weapon is or ask you to keep your hands visible. |

A Yonkers man and four teenage passengers in his car pleaded not guilty to felony weapons charges a day after two guns and a knife were found hidden in the car, police said. The gun arrests are the first in Mount Vernon since a tough new state gun law went into effect in November. The law calls for a prison term between 3 1/2 and 15 years upon conviction of possessing an illegal loaded gun. Probation is no longer an option for those convicted under the new law. |

State Rep. Joe Driver, R-Garland, wants people to have the same right to shoot intruders who invade their cars and businesses as they have to shoot people who break into their homes. If House Bill 284 were to become law, a person would have the right to use deadly force and would no longer be required to retreat to avoid violence in a business, workplace or vehicle. "It's a self-defense bill," Mr. Driver said of the measure, which he filed in October for the upcoming legislative session in Austin. |

Jimmy Manrrique with the Brownsville police criminal investigations division. “It’s illegal inside or outside the city limits to be discharging your firearm in the air.” |

As the power of BB and pellet guns has grown in recent decades, so has the number of injuries and deaths resulting from accidents, according to experts.
Many of the guns look strikingly similar to traditional firearms, and they are often unregulated. One law enforcement official said that criminals, including convicted felons, sometimes use air rifles to get around laws barring them from having firearms. |
