"1. Gun Control Laws reduce violent crime. "
"In 2003, a Center for Disease Control Task Force report found insufficient evidence to determine the effectiveness of any of the firearms laws or combinations of laws reviewed on violent outcomes." ...
"3. So called "assault weapons" with high-capacity magazines are responsible for higher body counts in rampage killings."
"Based upon an analysis of rampage shootings, rampage murderers shoot/attempt to kill a victim between two to seven times per minute. The higher rate of seven victims per minute, or one attempt every 17 seconds, is well within the capability of an unskilled amateur with a single-shot firearm and a pocket full of loose cartridges." ... |

... "Mayor Fields stated that he wants to stop the so called flow of high-powered weapons. Mayor Fields is trying to scare us into thinking that our police department is outgunned by criminals with Uzis and assault rifles. It makes me wonder how much Mayor Fields knows about the Lakeland Police Department or its budget since he stated that our officers only have a pistol and a shotgun. Mayor Fields should know that LPD received M-16 rifles from the federal government and purchased Spike's Tactical M-4 type rifles." ... |

While CNNs Piers Morgan is a well known critic of Americas Second Amendment, he has now ventured into a new campaign to reform another document critical in the development of western civilization; the Bible.
During a discussion on CNNs Piers Morgan Tonight on Monday Christmas Eve with Saddleback Church Pastor Rick Warren, Morgan argued that there needs to be an amendment to the Bible for same-sex marriage, because like the Constitution, the Bible is inherently flawed.
Both the Bible and the Constitution were well intentioned but they are basically, inherently flawed. Hence, the need to amend it, Morgan told Warren during a conversation where Morgan emphasized the need for America to separate Church and State. |

The second Omaha police officer who was fired after the forceful arrest of an Omaha man last year will return to the force.
The reinstatement of Officer Aaron Pennington by an independent labor arbitrator is expected to be announced today, bringing an end to months of closed-door procedures launched to protest his firing.
Former Police Chief Alex Hayes moved in September 2011 to fire Pennington and Officer Jackie Dolinsky for their roles in a videotaped scuffle outside Creighton University Medical Center. |

It's probably worth accepting the cold, hard fact that gun control won't work. Liberals who think it would prevent the next Sandy Hook are likely kidding themselves, and conservatives who fear it will dramatically curtail their rights at least in the short term are being overwrought. Don't get me wrong. I understand why there's a revived national debate taking place. When there is a serious problem, the natural tendency is to do something anything! to fix it. We like action. The problem is that for most people, the efficacy of the action is of little importance, so long as one cares enough to take some action. Even if the action has unintended negative consequences, stasis is rarely rewarded. |

One of the most fundamental of all rights is the right of self-defense. Every living creature has the natural right to defend self, family and community. This right predates our Constitution. Mankind from its very beginning developed tools for every aspect of life. Humans used rocks, spears, swords, crossbows and finally firearms for self-defense. Yes, a firearm is a tool for self-defense. And it is by far the most effective defensive tool ever developed. It is the great equalizer, allowing the weak to defend against the strong, the unskilled against the skilled. |

George Santayana once wrote, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." It seems gun control advocates think that reintroducing a bill similar to the Assault Weapons Ban (AWB) from 1994 is a good idea in the wake of the recent shootings. If you're not aware of what the AWB entailed, it banned specific "military style assault weapons" with certain characteristics that did nothing to improve their lethality, as fellow PM'er Mike Cooper points out. I also have to point out that these so called "assault weapons" are not military grade nor are they the same weapons that our military uses despite what many of our politicians like to say. The ban was in effect for a decade and expired in 2004. |

Its not yet his first day on the job, but Assemblyman-elect Phil Steck says hes fully on board with the push for tougher state and federal gun laws in the wake of this months schoolhouse massacre in Newtown, Conn. There are inconsistencies that allow guns to cross borders and limit the effectiveness of state laws, but if legislation in New York can save even one life or prevent one tragedy, we should act immediately. Under the leadership of Speaker Silver, and with my colleagues in the Assembly, I look forward to working on this issue, Steck said in a press release this morning. |

AS the nation teeters at the edge of fiscal chaos, observers are reaching the conclusion that the American system of government is broken. But almost no one blames the culprit: our insistence on obedience to the Constitution, with all its archaic, idiosyncratic and downright evil provisions.
Submitter's comments: Let's give up on The New York Times. Oh, never mind; we've already done that. The author is described as a "professor of constitutional law." Barry Obama was a "senior lecturer" and now they're both doing their utmost to tear down our Constitution. |

Citing calls to deport CNN host Piers Morgan for advocating gun control, a new post says that "White House petitions are being gamed to the point of absurdity." WEXFORD, Pa. (AP) Inside the Big Buck Sport Shop, where mounted moose and deer heads loom over rifles, handguns, targets and ammunition, the customers have no doubt: More gun laws will not save lives.
Fifteen miles south, in the city of Pittsburgh, many confronted by a steady stream of gun violence are just as certain: To reduce the carnage, stricter gun control is needed.
This divide has existed for decades, separating America into hostile camps of conservative vs. liberal, rural vs. urban. As the nation responds to the massacre of 20 children and six adults in Newtown, Conn., the gulf has rarely felt wider than now. |

Supporters of a microstamping, which makes guns and ammo more trackable, fear their best chance of getting the Mayor Bloomberg-backed measure enacted into law is slipping away. A gun control package being negotiated between Gov. Cuomo and legislative leaders does not address microstampingan issue Senate Republicans vehemently oppose despite its widespread support among law enforcement. "The Senate [Republicans] refuse to consider it," said Assembly Democratic Speaker Sheldon Silver, whose house has passed a microstamping bill several times. |

The New York State Rifle & Pistol Association is calling for a nationwide boycott of advertisers of the New York Journal News because of its decision to publish a list of lower Hudson Valley pistol license holders online this time with a searchable map. Below is a list of major national and local advertisers who run their ads in the Journal News. It is important that concerned citizens contact as many of these advertisers as possible. A short letter which starts by quickly outlining the irresponsible Journal News act of publishing the names and addresses of pistol license holders (and a Google Map with directions and family members' names) would be best. |

Last Friday, NBC's David Gregory was making headlines as the subject of a D.C. police investigation after having displayed an empty gun magazine on live television. Later that day, NBC announced that Gregory had landed an exclusive interview with President Obama, and the issue more or less went away. ... News anchors and media critics voiced disdain for the story on Twitter, The Wall Street Journal's conservative editorial board called it "entirely nonsensical," even the president of the National Rifle Association called it "silly." But for some right-wing bloggers and pundits, the idea that Gregory could be exempt from established gun laws was evidence of liberal media hypocrisy. |

Binghamton Mayor Matt Ryan is asking President Obama to put stricter gun control measures in place. He and about 750 other mayors have written a letter to the President. They are asking that every potential gun buyer have a criminal background check run on them. Currently, some buyers avoid checks by buying guns on-line or through unlicensed private sellers. Mayor Ryan also says military style weapons and high capacity ammunition magazines should not be allowed on the streets. And, he wants gun trafficking to become a federal crime. All of those ideas would require action by Congress. |
