"Gov. Bob Taft signed legislation Thursday giving law-abiding and mentally competent Ohioans the right to carry concealed handguns, just a day after the legislature sent it to him."
"The bill will take effect April 9, said Orest Holubec, spokesman for Taft. Bob Beasley, spokesman for Attorney General Jim Petro, said work already has started on the application forms and other material that county sheriffs will need to process applications and issue licenses."
"Still, it could be as long as 60 days after the bill takes effect before Ohioans can start applying for licenses, said state Sen. Steve Austria, R-Beavercreek, a key supporter of the legislation."
"When it does start, sheriffs should brace themselves for a flurry of applications, said Katie Bower, a manager in the Criminal Justice Information Center of the Michigan State Police."
------- They have several months to prepare for it. Better start now. |

"Some just sound like losers. Others sound like sore losers. And OFCC has learned that at least two of Ohio's liberal media outlets are already planning to violate the spirit and intent of the public records provision."
Cleveland Plain Dealer: "Since Taft chooses to hide behind journalists on this vital public-records matter, it is this newspaper's intention to obtain this information and publish it. Our readers deserve to know the identities of those who obtain permits to carry their guns in public. We hope other news organizations will do the same in their communities."
OFCC has learned that the Elyria Chronicle Telegram's editorial board voted, and plans to follow the lead of the Plain Dealer by printing the names of licensees.
------- Prior message from KeepAndBearArms.com Executive Director Angel Shamaya:
As soon as they publish permit holders' names, we'll publish the names, phone numbers and home addresses of every single person on staff at the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Same goes for any other newspaper that singles out gun owners in this way.
And we will distribute that data as far and wide as we can, throughout the State of Ohio, through all channels of our influence -- just like these Gun Bigots are threatening to do.
Contemplate other legal ways to make this newspaper regret their commitment to violating the privacy of lawful gun owners. Post comments here; we'll be reading them.
I'm also requesting that people in and around Cleveland begin collecting intel on the staff of the Cleveland Plain Dealer and forwarding it to me immediately. We've got a little time before permits are issued, but we may as well begin preparations for a measured, civil response to these hate-mongers right now. |

"Law Enforcement Alliance of America (LEAA) Executive Director and Retired Police Officer, James Fotis, commended the Ohio Legislature and Governor's Office for producing an agreement to pass Ohio's Right- To-Carry law. " 'I think it could be helpful in some ways,' Mansfield police Officer J.B. Bond said of the concealed-carry legislation that Gov. Bob Taft signed into law Thursday. * Crystal Rivera, who was six months pregnant, had stopped to rest while climbing the stairs out of a subway station and was cited for blocking a stairwell.

"One of several employees in the office managed to sneak out and went to the 77th Precinct station house, about half a mile away."

"A GUNMAN turned a busy Brunswick strip into a shooting gallery, opening fire on a reception centre from a car as children as young as nine stood outside."
"The children were among about 200 people at an engagement party, just 500m from Brunswick police station."
"Bullets sprayed the building above the heads of eight children, aged nine to 12, in Thursday night's drive-by shooting."
"The party-goers miraculously escaped injury."
"The brazen gunman, believed to be wielding a 9mm semi-automatic pistol, fired five shots into the second storey of the building."
------- Of course the gunman was brazen. He was guaranteed disarmed victims by the government! |

"A 14-year-old Longview High School student was arrested Thursday morning after authorities found him with a pistol and ammunition at the campus. Police say the boy brought the weapon to school for two days before it was discovered."
"Sgt. James Johnson, police spokesman, said authorities were alerted Wednesday evening about the gun, tipped by a parent whose child had seen the boy showing off the weapon in his fifth-period class."
"Police and school administrators apprehended the teen when classes started Thursday and found seven live rounds in his pocket and a .25-caliber semiautomatic pistol in his backpack, Johnson said. The gun was not loaded, and Johnson said the boy's parents had reported the weapon stolen Sunday." |

"POLICE today hailed their first use of stun guns a success, after they helped subdue a man who held police at bay for more than seven hours yesterday."
"Deputy Commissioner Peter Nancarrow said the 68-year-old man, armed with a carving knife, barricaded himself inside his house on Nicholson Street, Abbotsford, in Melbourne's north-east, about 3.45pm."
"Members of the police special operations group sealed off the area as they tried to negotiate his surrender and shortly after 11pm they used the Taser stun guns to subdue the man and end the siege."
" 'The Taser was considered to be the least lethal option and the most effective means of resolving the incident,' Mr Nancarrow said." |

"Carrying concealed weapons soon will be legal in Ohio, and some of this area's state legislators should be ashamed of helping make that possible."
"For once, we hope that gun advocates are right. They've been arguing that the result of concealed carry will be a decrease in crime, and that we'll see no increase in mayhem, intentional or accidental. We'll all find out soon enough."
KABA Note: The vast majority of the states have legalized concealed carry, and there has been no blood in the streets and no mayhem and murder. Why should Ohio be any different?
"Allowing concealed guns on Ohio's streets is a huge step downward in the quality of life for the people of Ohio."
Any actual proof or precedent of that? Or is this just another paranoid, hoplophobic rant? |

------- "Long out of favor, hunting is fast becoming a hip way to spend the weekend for the young and upwardly mobile. According to the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, the number of hunters with household incomes of $100,000 or more increased more than 25 percent, to 1.3 million, from 1991 to 2001 (taking into account inflation and population increases). And over the last three years alone, upscale hunting clubs like the Mashomack Preserve Club in Pine Plains, N.Y., and Pintail Point in Queenstown, Md., report that business has grown as much as 20 percent, while high-end gun manufacturers and specialty clothing retailers say that sales of hunting jackets and other gear are up 10 percent or more." |

"A few steps away from where the city's first homicide of 2004 took place, a group of concerned citizens, ministers and activists assembled Thursday for a prayer vigil against gun violence." ...
"At the vigil, Police Chief Jerry Barker urged the residents of the Near-Northside neighborhood where the shooting took place to be vigilant and strong in their pursuit of curbing crime and asked them to trust the police and authorities working in the neighborhoods. With a $1.1 million federal grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, Safe Neighborhoods has provided money to erect anti-violence billboards and hire officers and prosecutors to keep guns off the streets." |

" 'Wilmette residents are much safer without a handgun in their homes,' said Carpenter, who has been asked to speak on the issue during the Wilmette Village Board meeting Tuesday."

"The Ministry of Fisheries (MFish) is advising its officers not to take up a union offer of batons to protect themselves because they could find themselves in legal hot water."
"The National Union of Public Employees (NUPE) said today it was offering retractable batons to fishery officers after a plan approved by MFish in October 2002 to supply officers batons and pepper spray had not yet received government approval."
" 'This response follows a number of recent publicised attacks on fishery officers, who have the power to arrest and handcuff offenders,' NUPE acting secretary John Kerr said."
"However MFish national compliance manager Dave Wood said its legal advice was that the law needed to be changed before officers could use batons." |

"A Maywood police lieutenant already in trouble for a 2001 traffic stop now is accused of possession of stolen firearms, officials said Thursday."
"Harold Jenkins was indicted Jan. 2 on the weapons charges and faces arraignment Jan. 23..."
"Some of the guns were reported stolen from an Ohio teacher's vehicle, a source said. One gun was previously owned by a Maywood liquor store owner but confiscated by the police. The store owner was charged with illegally firing the weapon, but there was no record of the gun being placed into evidence. Another gun was in a plastic bag with an evidence receipt, but investigators were unable to determine what crime the gun was linked to, the source said." |

"THE Police Federation has hit out at a judge who refused to take a police officers word over that of a burglar who beat him up."
"PC Pete Scott suffered a breakdown after raider Paul Reilly attacked him in a loft Reilly had broken into, Reading Crown Court heard."
"Reilly admitted the assault but claimed he was only acting in self-defence a claim Judge Stanley Spence accepted, despite PC Scott and a fellow police officer saying it was an unprovoked attack."
"Judge Spences decision on Wednesday means Reilly will be sentenced on the basis that he may have been attacked first, a decision described by Inspector Martin Elliott, chairman of the Police Federation, as 'bizarre'."

"A culture of fear and the drug trade are behind a significant increase in young people carrying and using knives, according to a Victorian study."
"The three-year study by researchers at RMIT University, to be published later this year, found that 15 per cent of young people interviewed in focus groups admitted to having carried a weapon. Most cited the need for self-defence."
"Using Victoria Police data and hospital admission reports, the researchers found young men were both the predominant perpetrators and victims of knife attacks."
"Total offences involving knives tripled from 931 to 2798 between 1995 and 2000, according to police statistics."

The Commerce Police Department has compiled a list of ways residents can help prevent or deter the burglaries:
Make your home more difficult to enter by using solid core or metal doors with deadbolt locks.
Make sure sliding door locks are in good shape and use a secondary locking device along the track to keep the door from being opened.
Use alarm systems and post signs and decals in conspicuous places to deter burglars.
Have large, barking dogs.
Make sure all windows are locked and use secondary devices to keep windows from being opened.
Have good communication with your neighbors and work out a system of your neighbors watching for suspicious activity and return the favor by watching your neighbor's house while they are away. ...

"Officials in the popular ski resort area of Killington want the town to secede from Vermont and join neighboring New Hampshire in a dispute over taxes."
"They say the town's restaurants, inns and other businesses send $10 million a year to the state capital in sales, room and meal taxes, but the state returns just $1 million in state aid to Killington."
"Even more galling to the town is a statewide property tax imposed in 1997 to fund schools. The town of 1,092 won a Superior Court order that called the state's method of assessing local properties 'arbitrary and capricious,' but the state Supreme Court reversed that decision."
" 'It kind of reminds us of Colonial days,' Town Manager David Lewis said Thursday. 'The Colonies were being faced with the Stamp Act, the Tea Act, the Sugar Act. England wasn't giving them any rights. They were treating the Colonies as just a revenue source.' "
------- Hey, from each according to his ability, to each according to his need. Maybe the tyrants in Vermont just didn't feel Killington needed any more. |
