On Saturday approximately 150 gun owners packed the First Street fishing pier in Melbourne with holstered pistols on their sides. Statewide, hundreds of members of Floridas Open Carry Movement gathered at fishing venues in other cities across the state to support a repeal of Floridas unusual ban on carrying unconcealed sidearms. Open Carry is widely banned in Florida but there are exceptions for fishing, hunting, and camping. Only six other states generally ban openly carrying a properly holstered handgun.

Steven Rinella just may be the coolest man alive. In addition to his work in Field & Stream, Rinella has written two booksAmerican Buffalo and The Scavengers Guide to Haute Cuisinethe latter of which recounts the authors 45- course meal following recipes from the 1903 cookbook Le Guide Culinaire. Hes also traveled the world, usually in search of a great meal.
His meditations on Argentine beef...Now, Rinella stars in his own show, "The Wild Within," which debuted last night on The Travel Channel and is described as the story of one mans unique and powerful connection to the food he provides for his family and friends. Like Rinellas writing, the show is entertaining and offers an unapologetic view of the hunter-gatherer lifestyle. |

(VIDEO) "... My son is interested in hunting and in guns in general. He's got Nerf guns and things like that. The only thing I did say is that, you know, that you see what happens when you try to solve problems with guns. You can't solve problems with guns. There's always going to be more problems. ... I think Christina ... I know she wouldn't want things to change; would not want restrictions. I saw what happened to our lives, specifically because I travel quite a bit. After 9/11, travel became a nightmare. We don't need any more restrictions on our society, I think. ..."

In addition to "the vitriol that comes out of certain mouths," Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik blamed Arizona's gun laws for Saturday's shooting rampage in Tucson. "I have never been a proponent of letting everybody in this state carry weapons under any circumstances that they want," Dupnik said at a news conference yesterday, "and that's almost where we are." |

The Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights guarantees citizens of the United States the right to own and bear firearms. Because local governments were getting confused by this simple reality, in 2006 the Ohio General Assembly passed an ordinance holding that only federal or state regulations can limit Second Amendment rights in the Buckeye State.
HB347, the preemption law, became effective in March of 2007. It replaced a patchwork of varied and confusing local rules with "uniform laws throughout the state regulating the ownership, possession, purchase, other acquisition, transport, storage, carrying, sale, or other transfer of firearms, their components, and their ammunition." |

In the wake of the weekend's tragic shooting in Arizona, USA TODAY is once again bent on blaming millions of law abiding gun owners for the actions of one depraved individual.
Among other things, the Editorial Board wants to ban self-defense magazines that hold extra ammunition. While such a ban would not stop thugs like Jared Loughner from getting them, it would impact good Americans who don't like breaking the law. |

Predictions: We will do what Clarence Dupnik, the remarkably candid sheriff of Pima County, prescribed "some soul-searching" for a few days. There will be calls for toning down the vitriolic political rhetoric and, of course, calls to restore the federal ban on assault weapons. Then the nation will go back to watching football, as if nothing had happened or nothing can be done. |

The man who was shot and killed Sunday when he tried to burglarize a neighbors home had been charged with breaking into someone elses home three months ago.
Alan Hampton walked into his neighbors open door on Sylvan Road just before midnight Sunday and began beating Ricky Colwell with a chair as the 48-year-old lay sleeping in his bed with his wife next to him, said Independence Capt. Tony Lucas.
Colwell grabbed his gun from under the bed and fired several shots at the intruder, Lucas said. During the commotion, Colwell also accidentally shot himself in the upper right leg.
Hampton, who lived two doors away, ran from the house and the Colwells called 911. |

Republican Congressman Chris Smith of Hamilton said a deranged gunman can pop up anywhere and cause mass carnage comparable to what happened Saturday in Arizona, but Smith said he has no intentions of arming himself in self-defense.
If a particular lawmaker feels he or she wants to procure a weapon, thats their business. Just as any other law-abiding citizen, that is their Second Amendment right and, provided they go through the background check, they are certainly entitled to do that, Smith said. |

One topic that I'd suggest some members consider in the days ahead relates the status of Congressional staffers -- specifically, encouraging those staffers who regularly advance events or act as support staff to engage in firearm training and apply for concealed carry permits.
Rep. Giffords herself has always been a pro-Second Amendment member of Congress. But even if she had been carrying a firearm herself, as a practical matter, it's difficult for any politician to be mindful of personal threats as they focus on talking with constituents. |

One law enforcement official has been thrust into the national spotlight -- for some remarks he made following the shooting.
On Saturday, Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik, a Democrat, blamed the rampage in part on overheated political rhetoric, saying Arizona has become "a mecca for prejudice and bigotry."
Some Republicans have called his remarks irresponsible. CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric spoke with the Sheriff today and he's not backing down.

It never fails. Some wacko commits a heinous act with a firearm, and everyone who thinks he knows what everyone else should do immediately starts whining and sniveling about needing more gun control. Even formerly stalwart believers in the right to keep and bear arms, like KFYI radio talk-show host Barry Young begin wavering in their resolve and join the anti-gun crowd in complaining about high-capacity magazines. |

You want to blame me for the carnage? Okay, I accept. I'm to blame because I stopped carrying when Sheriff Hutchens took away our permits. Plus since then, I don't dry practice enough. When I did carry, I once had to present my weapon in self-defense. Because of my training, once the threat materialized it took me only one second to get my weapon out to the low ready (I measured the time on a recording of the incident). |

It's only Jan. 10, 2011, and already this year we've had one school shooting, resulting in two deaths and one injured, and a horrific mass shooting of a U.S. congresswoman, killing six and wounding 14.
Those are just the high profile shootings. On average, 32 people a day are murdered with guns. This attack got more attention, of course, because it was an attempted assassination of a member of Congress.
As a friend of mine observed over the weekend, more than zero gun deaths is too many. |

Proponents of .50-caliber weapons are at the forefront of the battle to keep our .22s. Open-carry proponents are protecting our right to concealed carry. Select-fire proponents are protecting those of us who prefer to possess only semiauto, or single-shot, weapons. This is the same battle the same enemy.
For example, even if we dont wish to carry openly, those who do are, in effect, returning us to our original norm. If we dont wish to pick up that burden, we at least need to acknowledge the benefits they bring to strengthen our norm, and support their efforts. Many of our citizens - in fact, many gun-owners - do not fully understand the lies that have been propagated to create fear of us and our firearms. We need to change that. |

Most people at the ranges said that, if anything, the shooting would cause more people to carry guns as a means of self-defense, rather than cause a retrenchment in the form of stricter laws.
The criminals are going to have guns, so why should we as law-abiding citizens be punished for what a criminal does? said Ms. OConnell.
Ms. OConnell lamented the death of Judge Roll, who was well known at the range: He knew how to shoot, but hed just been to church, and he probably didnt have his gun. |

The status quo, in other words, has a lot of defenders on and off Capitol Hill.
Lawmakers in May 2009, for instance, reintroduced a loophole-closing bill requiring background checks of people who buy firearms at gun shows. The bill vanished without a trace, as similar bills have done for many years. And while a bill to tighten interstate gun trafficking restrictions eked out 18 co-sponsors, a House resolution commending the National Rifle Association quickly secured 134 co-sponsors.
A 1994 federal assault-weapons ban originally authored by Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California expired in 2004. Conceding the political obstacles, Feinstein didn't introduce assault-weapons legislation in the last Congress. |

Is there a good reason to have 33 bullets loaded in a handgun?
This is the question being asked in the wake of the shooting of Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson, Ariz. over the weekend. The suspect, Jared Loughner, allegedly used a high-capacity 33-round magazine in his Glock-19 pistol. Without the need to reload as quickly, the shooter was able to effectively hold bystanders at bay, keeping them from intervening until 20 people had already been shot. |

It is rare, but not unheard of, for the Supreme Court to see the error of its ways and quickly reverse a poor decision. What's more, the Court's conservative bloc holds a mere 5-4 majority. It's not too late: one justice changing his mind, or one conservative justice being replaced by a more progressive one, could swing the balance in favor of a sane re-interpretation of the Second Amendment to acknowledge that the right to bear arms applies only to well-regulated militias, not to individual citizens like Jared Loughner. |

I am deeply saddened by the loss of life from the tragic shooting in Tucson, Arizona.
Our country is already going through a trying time as it deals with the economy and a loss of faith in our politicians. Unfortunately, the talking heads are already playing the blame game.
Arizona has been celebrating recent improvements in its policy toward self defense and personal protection. It has become a model of freedom. |
