Was it purposeful, or a sweet irony, that The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act was introduced with the bill number H. R. 38.

We will need to stay after our reps to get this passed.

Glassing the countryside from a high vantage point for whatever might be there, the camouflage-clad figure that appeared out of a brush-choked ravine surprised me, since I thought I was alone. And he gave me pause the first time I had seen someone carrying a "black gun" in hunting country.

The AR-15 was draped on a sling on the fellow's shoulder and I thought: What in the world is he doing with that thing in this country?

Having carried black guns of one sort or another during a career in law enforcement, they were the last thing I wanted to carry hunting.

Tragedies like this underscore the innate danger of all 265 million guns in circulation. America is comparable to other nations when it comes to mental illness rates and crime rates, but we lead the world in several deeply troubling categories: We have more guns in the U.S. than adults. We use our many guns to kill each other at a rate thats 25 times higher than people in any other high-income country in the world. And our gun-related suicide rate is eight times higher than in other high-income nations.

Furthermore, our guns are rarely used for self-defense.

Your normal square range training is great for working on your marksmanship and (depending on range rules) your gun-handling skills. Its not very good, however, for dealing with where were most likely to encounter threats in the real world, which are in what we call transitional spaces between our homes and jobs.

After the Fort Lauderdale airport shooting and the rash of gun crimes that have plagued cities such as Chicago and Baltimore, many have expressed the desire to do something about the problem, but where exactly do the public and so-called experts agree?

A new survey, conducted by media and polling firm Morning Consult and presented by the New York Times, attempts to answer that question by showing where the public and experts agree or disagree on how effective 29 different gun control policies would be in decreasing homicides committed with firearms in this country.

The survey also shows that two out of three officers oppose an assault weapons ban.

According to Pew, 74 percent of officers believe it most important to protect the right of Americans to own guns, while 25 percent want greater efforts to control gun ownership.

Sen. Don Huffines, R-Dallas, introduced a slew of gun-related bills late Wednesday, two of which are aimed at preventing firearm regulations at all levels of government.

One measure calls for an amendment to the Texas Constitution to prohibit the Legislature or local governments from requiring Texans to register their firearms. Huffines said in a written statement that the measure would prevent a "sneak attack or backdoor, dark-of-the-night attempt to create a gun registry."

Trying to outgun a gun store owner is not a good idea.

Trying to outgun a gun store owner highly trained in the tools of his trade and ready for trouble is close to suicide.

But thats exactly what two thugs did at the Dixie Gun and Pawn Shop outside Atlanta on the day after Christmas, and a video posted on YouTube this week has the graphic results for all to see.

A national survey of gun ownership in 2015 (https://www.thetrace.org/2016/09/good-guy-handgun-ownership-harvard-survey) revealed that 22 percent of Americans own guns. And the number of families with handguns is growing more rapidly than families with long guns. Handguns now account for 60 percent of the guns owned compared to 26 percent in 1994. This large increase in handgun ownership is reportedly driven by fear. Two-thirds of owners surveyed report having a handgun for self-protection.

According to reporting by The Trace, you are confident that the Arkansas state legislature will pass campus carry this year. I am writing to express my hope that you make good on this.

We have discussed this subject before at a debate held at Temple Shalom in Fayetteville in April of 2011. Since then, the legislature passed a law in 2013 that allows concealed carry by faculty and staff who have the appropriate license, but gave discretion to the boards of governors of the states colleges and universities to choose to continue banning those employees from being legally armed. And to date, every institution of higher education has chosen to deny the right to carry.

A new year means new laws, and that also could mean some confusion. Jasper County Sheriff Randee Kaiser joined the KZRG Morning Newswatch to clear up the misconceptions about Missouris open and concealed carry gun laws.

The places that you had to have a permit to carry before, you can now carry without a permit. Theres a list of places that are restricted areas like the airport, hospitals, schools, county government buildings, police stations- places that like that that are still prohibited for conceal and carry, just like before when you had to have a permit.

Kaiser is still recommending that you get your CCW, for a variety of reasons.

For more than a century, Tombstone has been known as the home of the Gunfight at the O-K Corral. The city's nickname is "the town too tough to die." Now, the small southern Arizona town is making headlines for a new reason.

A wild west town with a wild new idea.

"We're about rights, we're not advocating any violence," said Gordon Anderson, owner of the Larian Motel.

Supporters of a Humboldt man convicted of possessing an illegal gun silencer rallied at the Capitol on Wednesday, saying he should have been protected by a state law designed to nullify federal weapons regulations in Kansas.

Jeremy Kettler said he relied on the Kansas Second Amendment Protection Act of 2013 when he bought a locally made sound suppressor from his co-defendant, Shane Cox, a Chanute gun dealer, and posted a Facebook video of himself using it.

Political reality tells us New Hampshire's Republican House, Senate and governor will soon remove local police chiefs from the decision about who can carry a concealed weapon in the communities they serve and protect.

Politicians are gutting this layer of protection because it appeals to a passionate and vocal minority of voters. They make the Orwellian argument that more people carrying concealed weapons, even if they have a history of violence or severe mental illness, will somehow make us all safer.

Compared to some other states, such as California or New York, Kentucky has very few gun-related regulations. The Kentucky Constitution specifically states that armed self defense is an individual right, and the only aspect of that right the General Assembly may regulate is the concealed carry of weapons such as firearms.

Senate Bill 7, currently before the General Assembly, could eliminate Kentuckys only legal barrier to concealed carry.

Often lauded for its durability and accuracy, the M1A platform chambered in 7.62 NATO/.308 Win. also deserves a nod for flexibility. Not long ago I spent some quality time on the range with Springfield's long-range Loaded M1A target model. With its medium-weight National Match barrel and adjustable stock, that rifle can really reach out to far-off targets. However, with a few adjustments to the rifle's configuration, it becomes a potent close-quarters combat platform. Here's a closer look at the Springfield SOCOM 16 CQB M1A model designed specifically for up-close and personal situations.

The senator led a petition drive last year after learning from David Petronis -- president of New Eastcoast Arms Collectors Associates, which hosts the show -- that 2016 could be the shows last year, according to a news release from Marchione's office.
