People are different. You know were facing different issues. That means we just had the young child who brought a gun to school for a six-year-old, said Kristina Vitek visiting Southfield today.

We need to be a little more aggressive in regard to these straw purchases transpiring, said Deron Wood.

The topic is sensitive, personal, and passionate when it comes to gun control conversations.

"Lets reduce gun violence, the number one killer of kids in this country, by pursuing common-sense reforms here, " said Governor Gretchen Whitmer,

Whitmer mentioned the need for more reform during her swearing-in ceremony at the Capitol as a focus going into 2023.

The myth of the good guy with the gun is most often deployed as a cudgel to distract from the fact that guns in this country are most often not used for self-defense, but for crime, escalating grievances from petty to deadly, and generally providing easy opportunity for people to shoot themselves and their relatives, friends and coworkers either on purpose or, as is tragically frequent, on accident.

"I understand the court's denial today to reflect respect for the Second Circuit's procedures in managing its own docket, rather than expressing any view in the merits of the case," Alito wrote. He urged the lower court to continue to "expedite" the appeal.

The court's order marks the first Second Amendment case to reach the high court since a major Second Amendment decision last summer that expanded gun rights nationwide.

Back in 1995, Bryan Range pleaded guilty to fraudulently obtaining $2,458 in food stamps by misrepresenting his income. He returned the money, paid a $100 fine and $288 in court costs, and served three years of probation.

Although Range did not realize it, that Pennsylvania misdemeanor conviction also came with a lifelong penalty: He lost his constitutional right to keep and bear arms.

His case, which the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit will hear next month, poses the question of whether that policy, which prohibits gun ownership by millions of Americans with no history of violence, violates the Second Amendment.

Florida officials have proposed a ban on the state tracking firearm and ammunition purchases, arguing that tracking them violates the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

State Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson (R), state Sen. Danny Burgess (R) and state Rep. John Snyder (R) announced the proposed legislation on Tuesday. They said the legislation, which Simpson called the Florida Arms and Ammo Act, will prohibit the states financial institutions from collecting data on firearm and ammunition purchases.

The Protect Illinois Communities Act (HB 5471) bans the sale of all assault weapons and magazines in the state. It also requires owners to register existing guns, among other provisions. Gov. Pritzker signed the bill into law on Tuesday night.

Ed.: It was up to at least 48 counties, as of late Wednesday night.

The Ninth Circuit Federal Public and Community Defenders Tuesday filed an amicus brief in the US Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals arguing that no-firearm conditions imposed on criminal defendants out on bail are unconstitutional.

The brief supports criminal defendants in the position of Jesus Perez Garcia, who are on pre-trial release under conditions that include a firearm ban. It contends that the conditions violate the fundamental liberty interest protected by the Second Amendment.

It took the outrage over the school shooting of 19 young students and two teachers in Uvalde, Texas, last year to shake Congress out of lack of action a stupor that had lasted 29 years on passage of firearm safety legislation.

Among its reforms were tougher background checks for gun buyers younger than 21; $15 billion in funding for mental health programs and school security upgrades; financial incentives to states to implement extreme-risk protection orders that confiscate guns from those who pose a threat to themselves or others; and closure of the boyfriend loophole, intended to block sales of firearms to those convicted of abusing unmarried intimate partners.

A bill introduced in the Nebraska Legislature would take on federal gun control and end state and local enforcement of many federal acts that infringe on the right to keep and bear arms within the Cornhusker State.

Sen. Steve Halloran (R) introduced Legislature Bill 194 (LB194) on Jan 9. Titled the Second Amendment Preservation Act, the bill would prohibit state agencies and law enforcement officers from enforcing a federal statute, order, rule, or regulation purporting to regulate a firearm, a firearm accessory, or firearm ammunition that does not exist under the laws of this state, except to comply with an order of a court.

Federal public defenders representing indigent criminal defendants in several states including Arizona, California and Texas are urging appeals courts to strike down prohibitions on criminal defendants and felons possessing guns.

The appeals court hasnt finished its review of the case, and justices are often reluctant to weigh in under those circumstances. The justices could still consider the case and the law more generally in the future.

In a two-paragraph statement that accompanied the courts order, Justice Samuel Alito wrote that the New York law at issue in the case presents novel and serious questions. But Alito, writing for himself and fellow conservative Justice Clarence Thomas, said they understood the courts decision not to intervene now to reflect respect for the appeals courts procedures in managing its own docket, rather than expressing any view on the merits of the case.

If you think about it, we spend our entire lives using our voice to get what we want and to try to avoid what we dont. It is interesting how some folks develop this into quite an art, while others dont have a clue. That is also true when we consider self-defense, although we rarely discuss using voice as a tool.

I remember one deputy in the sheriffs department in North Texas. He was a portly sort of fellow whose shirttail always seemed to be out, but we soon learned that there was more there than met the eye.

Glock pistols are a bit of a paradox. Everyone knows about them. (Unless you live under a rock, how could you not?) But ask someone to explain the Glock handgun line by model, generation, caliber, and use, and youre going to end up with a lot of blank stares. If youre trying to select the best one for you or someone else its pretty important to have a grasp on the companys ecosystem.

It doesnt help that Glock pistols have a sameness to their look that blurs the lines between one model and the next. Or a numbering methodology that has zero bearing on the pistols cartridge or intended use. The fact that Glock has overlapping generations pistols still in production doesnt help clear things up either.

Depending on when a crime happens, what may be happening at the same time elsewhere, not to mention the weather, it could be quite a long time before law enforcement can get to the scene of a Vermont crime.

A great many Vermonters know that not only can they be the first person affected by crime, they will likely be their own first responder. A high percentage of Vermont homes have firearms in them, and the vast, vast majority of the Vermonters who own those firearms know how to safely and competently handle them. Combined, these two facts go a long way to explain why Vermont is consistently one of the safest states in the nation when it comes to violent crime and property crime.

Illinois has banned the sale of many common kinds of semiautomatic guns with immediate effect in response to a massacre at an Independence Day parade in Highland Park last year and other mass shootings.

The new law, which Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker signed on Tuesday evening, bans selling many kinds of weapons that automatically load the next bullet after a shot, including semiautomatic rifles and pistols with detachable magazines. The law lists dozens of popular gun brands made by U.S. gun makers.

Bradley Huletts father considers himself a Second Amendment guy. Adam Van Allen grew up familiar with guns, having two parents working in law enforcement. Nayloni Fairleys father taught her to avoid firearms even before she started first grade.

Bradley lived in a Tampa suburb, Adam in rural Clay County and Nayloni in one of the nations largest cities. But unintentional shootings dont care about demographics. They dont care about neighborhoods. They dont care about the devastation to any childs family.

The city of New Orleans is seeing an increase in car break-ins, and tourists and locals alike are finding themselves victims.

Justin Brown, a community activist with Empower You NOLA, said the criminals committing these break-ins don't want purses or electronics. They want guns and mainly target pick-up trucks.

"They don't have a trunk to put it in, they don't have a lock box, so that is why they are targeting trucks. It's an easy target," said Brown.

Brown says criminals are smashing windows open and moving quickly.
