"The goal of the 'liberals' -- as it emerges from the record of the past decades -- was to smuggle this country into welfare statism by means of single, concrete, specific measures, enlarging the power of the government a step at a time, never permitting these steps to be summed up into principles, never permitting their direction to be identified or the basic issue to be named." --Ayn Rand

"With so much pro-police sentiment flooding the nation lately, I guess that throwing cold water on the positive mood won't be greeted favorably by most. But the fact is, there are any number of problems with the resurrection of the "heroic cop" image in the public imagination..." --Tim Wise, AlterNet.org

Oliver Letwin, the shadow home secretary, is to drop one of William Hague's most controversial policies - the right of householders to defend their property by force.

Before the last election, the then Conservative leader championed the cause of Tony Martin, the Norfolk farmer who shot dead a teenage intruder.

But yesterday Mr Letwin said, "One doesn't want to create a society in which people are liable to be mown down if they enter a property."

Federal law overrides an Oklahoma one that exempts homes used in drug crimes from being taken by state authorities, an appeals court ruled.

That means the federal government can take an Oklahoma home if its owner is selling or possessing drugs.

The 10th Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver ruled 3-0 Wednesday that a federal law on property forfeiture preempts a state law that prohibits home seizure.

ARLINGTON - Sales taxes for public safety are now policy in 16 Tarrant County cities - but not in Arlington.

That may change this year if Pat Struble and Dale Attebery get their wish. But the community leaders will first have to persuade a skeptical City Council that is already juggling other sales tax proposals - and a public that has yet to rally around the idea.

Perhaps, newcomer, you too have noticed these signs. They stem from a 1995 law that allows Texans to carry concealed handguns, provided they have a license - a requirement that includes a gun safety course. So let me introduce you to an issue you may have wondered about.

Texas is among 31 states that allow most people to carry concealed weapons, provided they meet certain standards...

The skies have become less friendly for law enforcement agents carrying prisoners, and county agencies are looking for cost-effective alternatives to their leading carrier.

The [FFA] in December began requiring that all prisoners wear handcuffs while flying. In keeping with its policy that it would not transport prisoners who needed to be cuffed, Southwest Airlines responded by getting out of the prisoner-transport business.

"The part of it that is bedrock for me is the concept of academic freedom," Machen said. "It's our contention that there is a possibility the presence of firearms on campus would undermine this free-flowing exchange of ideas. That's why we don't want them.

"to move this demolished country into the category of somewhat functional Third World nation, one problem looms, perhaps above the myriad others: rampant lawlessness."

"There are more problems now than before," he told his visitors. "Robberies happen all the time, and if they can kill the people, they do that. We don't care about our lives here. People who care about their lives should go. The sun is going down."

--Isn't it strange that the ones WITH the guns are running the show?!

Third story on page.

A federal judge has banned experts from testifying whether a fingerprint taken from a crime scene matches that of a defendant, saying the century-old identification technique is unreliable.

Although fingerprints themselves are unique and permanent, the technique to match them is subjective and scientifically unreliable, U.S. District Judge Louis H. Pollak said in a ruling last week.

[Yet they are often required for gun permits.]

Craig Storer woke to someone pounding on his front door. ATF agents and Sheriff's deputies were there to search for "illegal firearms." They did not have a warrant. He was told that he and his girlfriend "could wait outside in the cold until the ATF could obtain a warrant on a Sunday morning, or he could just sign the consent." None of the men who had guns pointed at him identified themselves as law enforcement officers.

Grover Crosslin and Rolland Rohm are two more victims of the war on drugs.

According to Cass County Prosecutor Scott Teeter, the FBI and Michigan State Police were perfectly justified when they gunned down Grover "Tom" Crosslin and Rolland Rohm. The two hadn't actually done anything violent to merit the attention of law enforcement authorities, but they didn't knuckle under when police laid siege to Rainbow Farm Campground, their home.

The Supreme Court on Monday plunged into the thorny issue of how much power the government has to dictate what people do with their land.

The principal question for the justices is whether the government must compensate landowners whom it has temporarily banned from using their property as they see fit. Justices must confront the vexing issue of whether a constitutional ban on 'taking' someone's land without compensation applies to temporary government land-use bans.

"I call up the most strident anti-police activists...I ask these police critics the following question:

Suppose that in the wake of September 11, the FBI decides to check out recent graduates of American flight schools to see who else may be plotting to use airplanes as weapons. Which students, I ask, should the FBI investigate--all of the would-be pilots, or a subset of them?

Without exception, I get the following answer: 'The FBI should investigate everyone.'" --Heather MacDonald

"The obvious solution is a 5-day wait or 'cooling off period' between the time your reporter prepares a story and when it may be published. This reasonable restriction would allow facts to be verified by a federal agency (such as the 'Newspaper and Information Confirmation Service').

A brief delay wouldn't interfere with anybody's rights but would make sure that people exercise their rights in a responsible manner. I'm confident the media would go along with my proposal.

They like it for the Second Amendment; why not for the First?"
