Grade schools have an on-campus police officer nearly all the time. I do not think an armed security officer would be more effective.
An armed security officer would most likely be the first victim if a mass shooting took place.
If Canada is referring to undercover security officers, wouldn't they be the same as trained concealed handgun permit holders?
Intelligent, law-abiding men and women need to stop relying on the competence of others to provide them protection and educate themselves on proper firearm handling and self-defense.
The most important weapon a concealed handgun carrier has is concealment. No one knows who is carrying and who is not, and this becomes the greatest deterrent of all. |

So in our scenario, group B is at the mercy of group A. Only two options exist to regain some balance in the balance of power. One is to disarm group A. If group A represents the government, this option will never occur. No government will ever agree to give up its weapons. If group A represents the criminal element of our society, the option is also off the table. |

The government has filed an AMICUS in the DC vs. Heller Case set to go before SCOTUS in March. I encourage everyone, whether you hunt or shoot guns of ANY KIND, to click on the title link above and sign the Petition. This will let our government know we take the 2ND amendment seriously. |

Reasonable regulations include the federal ban on machine guns and other "particularly dangerous types of firearms," he said in the brief. Moreover, the government forbids gun possession by felons, drug users, "mental defectives" and people subject to restraining orders, he said.
"Given the unquestionable threat to public safety that unrestricted private firearm possession would entail, various categories of firearm-related regulation are permitted by the 2nd Amendment," Clement said. He filed the brief in a closely watched case involving Washington, D.C.'s ban on keeping handguns at home for self-defense.

Have you ever heard the story of the guy who started dumping free corn in the field for the wild pigs, after driving just a single fencepost into the ground?
Every day he went out and drove another fencepost into the ground, laying a few cross-beams between the posts. Every day the pigs waited for him to walk off a piece, and then came around for the free food.
They ridiculed the lone holdout pig, who stayed lurking at the edge of the woods as they glutted themselves.
Finally the day came when the pen was finished. The pigs walked in, just as they had become accustomed to doing. And the man closed the gate.
Submitter's note: Not strictly gun related but describes the actual source of all our countries problems. A succulent read. |

Individuals who've been involuntarily committed to mental hospitals still can legally buy a gun in Pennsylvania despite a 40-year-old federal law that says they can't. That's because the Pennsylvania State Police do not report a person's involuntary hospital stay to the FBI's criminal background check system for gun buyers. The state police believe that doing so would violate federal privacy laws regarding medical records. |

For Jackson lawyer Ivy Scarborough, coming to a gun and knife show provides an opportunity to brush up on some history lessons. "If you're a history buff like I am, it's a lot of history at these shows," said Scarborough, who spent the morning at the Jackson fairgrounds looking at items such as a 1917 military rifle used by native Tennessean Sgt. Alvin York in World War I. Scarborough and hundreds of others came out Saturday for the Gun and Knife Show hosted by R.K. Shows. |

While we've been distracted by the way the ATF, under the leadership of Michael Sullivan, has fixed its prosecutorial attention on the Akins Accelerator, the ATF has found the time to rule on the definition of a 'machine gun'.
Ryan Horsley has it here at Red's Trading Post.
I recall the 2001 Area 1 USPSA Tournament in Washington, which I attended with an STI Edge which I received from my then gunsmith AT THE MATCH.
The first time I shot it was in Stage 1 of the match, at which the pistol doubled (fired multiple shots when the trigger was pulled.) I was ejected from the stage
Under the new BATFE ruling, the fact that my pistol actually shot more than one round with a single trigger-pull, ATF considers it a machine gun. |

Acting ATF Director Michael J. Sullivan has taken the ATF to an all time low during a Federal trial this week, (US v. Olofson, Milwaukee Wisconsin). US District Judge, the Honorable Charles N. Clevert chastised Assistant US attorney Gregory J. Hannstad, for attempting to "Dupe the Defense" during the trial for attempting to use slight of hand to prevent me from testifying for Mr. Olofson
"any weapon that shoots more than once without manual reloading, per function of the trigger is a machinegun". To clarify when I was on the stand, I asked him "Are you saying if I take my Great Granddaddy's double barrel out and I pull one trigger and both barrels go off, its a machinegun?". He went back to the law and claims "any weapon that shoots"

Town by town across the country, headlines have been telling similar stories. Lakewood, Wash.: Family Blames Iraq After Son Kills Wife. Pierre, S.D.: Soldier Charged With Murder Testifies About Postwar Stress. Colorado Springs: Iraq War Vets Suspected in Two Slayings, Crime Ring. Individually, these are stories of local crimes, gut-wrenching postscripts to the war for the military men, their victims and their communities. Taken together, they paint the patchwork picture of a quiet phenomenon, tracing a cross-country trail of death and heartbreak. The New York Times found 121 cases in which veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan committed a killing in this country, or were charged with one, after their return from war. |

"The Bush administration...added that, "like other constitutional rights, that individual right is subject to reasonable restrictions.'"
Submitter's notes: The Second Amendment does not grant a constitutional right-it places a constitutional restraint on the powers of government concerning the right.
The Bush administration, like the D.C. government, is asserting that government has the constitutional authority to convert a restraint on the power of government into a restraint on the people's rights. |

The cops got a pretty good laugh when they learned the name of the felon they grabbed driving a truck around Brooklyn with a gun in his waistband. "Damon Lucky," the man said back in 2004. The chuckles followed Lucky through Central Booking and arraignment and conviction. He had already done nearly five years for shooting somebody in 1992 as well as being caught with two pistols and drugs. He now faced 10 years of hearing people laugh when they heard his name. "Lucky? In here? Yeah, right!" Then Lucky got word of a gun case in Washington that offered hope his luck might change. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia had ruled that the blanket ban on handguns in the capital was unconstitutional. |

Gun control hasn't been a huge issue in the GOP primaries. This is largely because gun control has ceased to be a huge issue in any election anywhere, as Democrats have largely given up on promoting it. They like to win elections, see. But now the Bush administration has filed an amicus brief in what is the largest 2nd amendment case to come before the supreme court in more than seventy years. And this amicus is sure to roil the NRA and may have a large impact on the primaries. |

A drill instructor in the National Guard has been convicted in a Wisconsin federal court of illegally transferring a machine gun after a rifle he loaned to a student malfunctioned, setting off three shots before jamming.
The verdict of guilty on one count in the case against David Olofson was confirmed yesterday by the clerk's office in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin.
That means now that anyone whose weapon malfunctions is subject to charges of having or handling a banned gun, according to an expert witness who reports that the particular problem is a well-known malfunction and was even the subject of a recall from the manufacturer. |

In June, the Department of Defense Task Force on Mental Health acknowledged "daunting and growing" psychological problems among our troops: Nearly 40 percent of soldiers, a third of Marines and half of National Guard members are presenting with serious mental health issues. What they have come up with has already been dubbed "the mourning after pill." Propranalol, if taken immediately following a traumatic event, can subdue a victim's stress response and so soften his or her perception of the memory. That does not mean the memory has been erased, but proponents claim that the drug can render it emotionally toothless.

You realize there are times very rarely, once every few years when you would be subject to a rotating outage and everything would crash including your computer and traffic lights, and you dont want to do that, said Arthur H. Rosenfeld, a member of the energy commission.
Reducing individual customers electrical use if necessary, involuntarily could avoid that, Dr. Rosenfeld said. If you can control rotating outages by letting everyone in the state share the pain, he said, theres a lot less pain to go around.
Submitter's note: I don't like where we are headed!

... "At a debate at Columbia Law School in November, Robert A. Levy, one of the lawyers for the plaintiffs in the case before the Supreme Court, District of Columbia v. Heller, proposed a thought experiment. Suppose there were a constitutional amendment that said, 'A well-educated electorate, being necessary to the self-governance of a free state, the right of the people to keep and read books shall not be infringed.' Who would doubt that such an amendment protected a right to possess all books and to read books for purposes other than civic self-betterment?" ... |
