A Cook County judge has dismissed a case brought by the state's attorney's office to stop handgun manufacturers and a Melrose Park gun shop from producing and selling illegal, inexpensive revolvers.
Circuit Court Judge Robert Boharic on Thursday dismissed a request by the state's attorney for an injunction against Donald R. Beltrame, owner of Suburban Sporting Goods on West North Avenue. The suit also named manufacturers and distributors Bryco Arms, Phoenix Arms and others as defendants. |

A Portlander jailed since October on federal weapons charges has been indicted by a federal grand jury on a variety of fraud counts including unlawfully obtaining American citizenship.
Ali Khaled Steitiye, 39, was indicted Thursday on the citizenship charge, plus charges of credit card fraud, possessing a counterfeit resident alien card, making false statements in an application for Medicaid, food stamp fraud and misusing fraudulently obtained Social Security numbers. |

Schools still have zero tolerance for weapons, but the hard line on disciplining students who bring them to school appears to be softening.
Zero tolerance still means that districts will not tolerate students bringing a weapon or a lookalike to school, said Cahokia Superintendent Jed Deets. But punishment varies, with some districts offering students more leeway than others. |

It does not get any better for the rights of Illinois gun owners than the dismissal of fanny pack carry charges on Thursday and the acquittal of Unlawful of Possession of a Weapon charges on Friday. Vana was found guilty of selling Brass Knuckles and I think State's Attorney's argument that Vana's paperweights "quacked like a duck" were persuasive. |

Law enforcement officials from numerous foreign countries receive counter-terrorism training at LSU.
But there is no training facility in Louisiana or any other state where domestic police can learn to deal with terrorist threats, Ascension Parish Sheriff Jeff Wiley said. |

The City of Philadelphia cannot sue the gun industry for negligently distributing its products in a way that creates a public nuisance because "gun manufacturers are under no legal duty to protect citizens from the deliberate and unlawful use of their products," the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Friday. |

A shortage of trigger safety locks required on all weapons sold under a new state law has stalled gun purchases and frustrated shop owners.
Gun shop owners have had to shelve racks of arms while they wait for locks that are nearly impossible to come by and won't arrive for months because of a shortage of manufacturing capacity. |

Several thousand people jammed two exposition buildings at Ventura's Seaside Park on Saturday for the start of a two-day gun show that draws novice and veteran shooters, collectors, history buffs and vendors.
The show, which runs through today, also seeks to attract families by offering toys for children, clothes, camping gear and Arizona real estate. |

Despite the protests of a self-described gun safety organization, a firearms manufacturer advertising a shotgun online as a "homeland security" self-defense weapon says that, in an age of domestic terrorism, he is not resorting to false advertising.

In Salt Lake City, Olympics organizers are preparing for the potential for both international and domestic terrorism...

As reported in last week's FAX Alert, an appellate court in Illinois allowed a reckless lawsuit against various gun manufacturers and distributors to proceed under the theory that the firearm industry was creating a public nuisance. On the heels of that misguided ruling, the Hunting & Shooting Sports Heritage Foundation (HSSHF) issued a press release noting that the group has committed its financial resources to an appeal of that case. |

Although Gov. Parris N. Glendening pledged not to push more gun-control bills, legislators will reprise efforts to approve some measures that he might sign in this final year of his administration.
Sen. Christopher Van Hollen, Montgomery County Democrat, said he is sponsoring a measure that requires anyone who purchases a handgun or other regulated firearm to obtain a license. |

Meanwhile, groups who had contracts with the fair board to use the arena this year are facing uncertainty. Richard Walters, a promoter for Niles Gun Show Inc., showed up at the County Council last Monday. He asked council members for help in finding out whether the show was still going as scheduled. His request to find out who was in charge of handling the scheduling of the events fell on deaf ears: No one addressed his concern. |
