-------

It's amazing that the LA Times actually printed something this positive about firearms. Read it, and pass it on.
-------

"Guns are bad. All my life, it's been that simple. At my son's preschool, if a child pointed a banana and said 'bang,' he was admonished to "use the banana in a happier way." As far as I was concerned, the 2nd Amendment gave us the right to protect ourselves against invading armies, not the right to buy a gun and keep it under our beds."

"So what would make someone like me change my mind? I met this gun enthusiast. As research for my new novel, I asked him many questions, all the while voicing my disgust. My character might use a gun, but I never would. 'Come to the range,' the gun guy said. 'I'll teach you to shoot.' " ...

"Maybe it's a Southern thing, but such was the case last week when I joined Josh Sugarman, executive director of the Violence Policy Center in Washington, in calling for the ban of handguns in America." ...

"U.S. lets scofflaw gun dealers continue to arm criminals"
Submitted by: Newslinks Admin

There are no comments on this story

Lie #1:
"Multiple offenders make up only about 1% of the nation's 104,000 licensed gun dealers. "

Fact #1:
There has been no proof that these gun dealers did anything wrong. Therefore, calling these dealers "offenders" in a major U.S. newspaper is libelous and offensive.

Lie #2:
"The problem of scofflaw dealers was underscored by a report Tuesday by the Americans for Gun Safety Foundation, which favors tougher enforcement of existing laws."

Fact #2:
The ATF itself has branded the recent AGS so-called "study" as misleading, since traces do not necessarily lead to prosecutions and the owners of these stores have never been prosecuted for violations, and that high sales volume could lead to a higher number of traces.

In short, calling a gun dealer a "scofflaw" when he or she has never been convicted or even accused of breaking the law deserves to be met with a lawsuit.

'Little man with big gun' or a guy 'protecting his home'?

"Aloysius Oliver was a 'little man with a big gun' and 'hell-bent' on not getting caught the night he fatally shot Chicago police officer Eric Lee in an alley, prosecutors said Tuesday at the start of Oliver's murder trial."

" 'Ladies and gentlemen, meet Aloysius Oliver, cop killer,' declared Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Jim McKay, striding up to where Oliver sat in court and jabbing a finger at him." ...

"Defense attorney Marijane Placek described a confused, fast-moving scene in which Oliver fired in self-defense, not knowing that Lee and other Chicago police officers, all dressed in plain clothes, were cops and believing they were trying to break into his home."

-------
Note that the "big gun" the news report describes is a .357-caliber revolver. Note also that in Chicago, guns are banned for everyone except cops, and yet this man was able to get his hands on a pistol and shoot this officer. This should tell you something about the efficacy of gun control.

"The gun lobby is marshaling its forces for an all-out assault this year to weaken key gun-control laws and shield weapons makers from liability in lawsuits."

" 'Major advances for the NRA are within reach this year,' said Robert Spitzer, a political science professor at the State University of New York and author of a book on the politics of gun control. 'With the most sympathetic administration ever, the gun rights groups will have all their chips on the table.' "

"Over the next weeks and months, the pro-gun lobby is expected to play those chips in a friendly, Republican-controlled Congress, pushing ahead on an agenda that has gun control forces on the defensive. Congress will consider proposals that would . . . .

"A federal judge has upheld the District's strict gun control law against a legal challenge backed by the National Rifle Association."

"U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton dismissed a lawsuit by five D.C. residents, who said the 28 year old law infringes on their Second Amendment right to own firearms."

"But Walton ruled that the Second Amendment is not a broad-based right of individuals to own guns. He says it was meant to allow militias to mobilize for public defense."

"Tuesday's decision has breathed new life into the church's challenge to Minnesota's controversial handgun law."

"Leaders at Edina Community Lutheran Church hailed the ruling. Observers following the new law and the case called it an important turn in the battle over the issue of carrying handguns in public."

IL: Wilmette police chief gets an earful on handgun ban

"Dozens of gun supporters listened to -- and sometimes booed -- Wilmette Police Chief George Carpenter as he spoke of the dangers of handguns during a packed village board meeting Tuesday evening."

" 'Wilmette residents ask me what's my experience working in this village, and I tell them that handguns create a hazard in the home,' said Carpenter, followed by some boos in the audience. 'My experience is that handguns are more likely to be used or threatened to be used in quarrel or domestic situations or in suicide attempts.' "

-------
The chief must not read the newspapers a whole lot. Armed self defense happens practically every day, but he still insists that a gun is more likely to be used against a family member, even despite the fact that the gun may have saved the lives of Mr. DeMar and his family after a career criminal broke into their home.

Tell ya what, chief. Why don't you willingly disarm yourself against the criminal element and instead of defending yourself call 911. Let's see what is faster, the criminal's bullet or the police response.

"Gun-control advocates haven't had reason to cheer during recent General Assembly sessions, but they seem more excited about 2004."

"Two groups pushing for stricter limits on firearms introduced a legislative agenda Tuesday, one day before the session convenes. Among its goals: a stronger ban on carrying guns into bars and restaurants that serve alcohol, and giving local school boards the authority to declare gun-free zones on school property."

-------
In other words, disarm peaceable citizens who want to enter a restaurant, regardless of whether or not they plan to have an alcoholic drink and create yet more victim disarmament zones, leaving defenseless kids and teachers vulnerable to those who refuse to obey the law.

"Liberal Democrats in Congress are getting ready to force their partys presidential nominee down the same road that led to the defeat of Al Gore and his running mate four years ago."

"In the days following the 2000 election, a number of Democrats realized that their fixation on guns and gun owners had cost their candidates millions of votes that year. Even before leaving office, President Bill Clinton warned that the 'gun issue' and the efforts of the National Rifle Association (NRA) had cost Gore five states that he might otherwise have won and, thus, the election. Labor leaders began urging the party to get the gun issue off the table after watching droves of their own members desert Democrats they were afraid would restrict their right to own firearms."

"And Democratic candidates took heed." ...

"A day after a national study showed a large number of weapons sold in Arizona were used in crimes, the U.S. Attorney's Office said prosecution of gun crimes has nearly doubled under a program aimed at neighborhood safety."

"...federal gun prosecutions in the state are up to 302 last year from 156 in 1998, thanks to a nationwide program called Project Safe Neighborhoods that was initiated by President Bush and Attorney General John Ashcroft in 2001. It has meant $3.4 million for Arizona so far."

"Charlton, flanked at a press conference by Phoenix Police Chief Harold Hurtt, Mayor Phil Gordon and prosecutors working the gun cases, is now asking the public to get involved."

"They are kicking off a media campaign urging people to call police if they know about or suspect illegal activities involving guns or gun violence."

In other words, not only are they using our tax money to violate the 10th amendment to the U.S. Constitution and to vilify guns, but they are recruiting people into the "snitch-on-your-neighbor" program.

"Laws can only do so much. What begs for attention is strict enforcement of existing laws." ...

"That's the problem Thanos Polyzos allegedly encountered when he tried to press a .45-calibre Tac-Four semi-automatic on Norm Gardner, then the chair of the Toronto Police Services Board. Just a little prezzie no strings attached, no favours expected from one firearms fancier to another; Polyzos the professional manufacturer, Gardner the lay enthusiast." ...

"In that context, showcasing his product for future retail opportunities by giving even a snazzy new model to the chair of the police board, would have been a useless exercise. But perhaps there were other reasons for putting a sidearm on Gardner's hip and a smile on his face. That's a subtext to this inquiry's purpose in trying to determine whether Gardner broke the law when he accepted the handgun early last year, only paying for the pistol a couple of months later, at which time Gardner apparently knew that the Ontario Provincial Police were looking at the circumstances behind the gift." ...

"One of the weapons had been recovered by Maywood police in 1980 as evidence in a case against a man who fired the weapon into the air."

"Other weapons were also recovered from Jenkins' home, according to one published report, including multiple guns that were reported stolen from an Ohio teacher's vehicle. Another gun recovered from Jenkins was in a plastic bag with an evidence receipt tag attached." ...

"The poll showed that though most Americans give the edge to the Democratic Party on domestic issues, the Republican Party retains an advantage on security issues and world affairs, and Bush gets credit for that."

"At least 50 percent or more of those interviewed said the Democratic Party would do a better job on such issues as the environment, health care and education."

"Nearly 50 percent preferred the Democrats on issues such as the budget deficit, the economy and taxes."

"But on issues such as terrorism, the Iraq war, world affairs and gun policy, those interviewed gave the nod to the Republicans."

"A judge's ruling was criticised yesterday for accepting a claim of self-defence from a burglar who injured a policeman trying to arrest him."

"Pc Peter Scott was called to a house where an intruder was hiding in the loft. The officer told a court that Paul Reilly resisted arrest and assaulted him as he attempted to carry out his duty, punching him and then grinding his face into roof lagging."

"Pc Scott was left with substantial facial injuries. Reilly appeared at Reading Crown Court last week and admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm, but on the basis of self-defence."

"After listening to evidence, the judge said: 'I cannot be sure the defendant was not acting in self-defence when he pushed Pc Scott.' "

"Rappahannock County fire department officials say that the Sheriff's Office dispatchers delay getting emergency calls out, make mistakes in locations and are not sufficiently trained in fire and rescue dispatching."

"They said the dispatchers, who are deputy sheriffs, are overworked and sometimes distracted by other duties."

"Concerned about delays in a rural county where distances and time count in saving lives, the Amissville Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company sent two written complaints to Sheriff Larry Sherertz detailing three incidents in the past two months..." ...

911 is a good service for calling for backup. In situations requiring an armed response for self- and home-defense, the immediate duty falls to whoever is there in that moment. We're fine with the Sarah Brady-worshipping sheep lying on the floor of a closet and whimpering on the phone to a slow and sometimes inaccurate dispatcher. We just value ourselves, our lives, the lives of our loved ones and our personal dignities more than that.

"The wars of the 1990s and centuries of tradition of holding personal weapons have left millions of illegally held guns around the Balkans."

"Several efforts to unearth these weapons including amnesty for weapon holders in Serbia, Macedonia and Kosovo have failed."

"Most weapons come from two sources, experts agree. The former Yugoslav army handed over hundreds of thousands of handguns and rifles to Serb civilians in former Yugoslavia since 1991. And they come from the looting of more than 1,300 army depots in Albania in 1997."

"Hundreds of thousands of these weapons were smuggled later to other areas of the Balkans."

"The presence of such arms 'contributes to the atmosphere of insecurity and instability in an area that badly needs peace and development,' the (United Nations-sponsored) meeting declared." ...
-------

Right, it has nothing to do with residents protecting themselves from repeats of the recent genocide! Will the UN forces in the area be laying down their arms? Hardly.
