I am concerned about the alarming number of gun shows scheduled for Solano County in 2007. I'm sure we are all aware of the rising level of senseless gun violence in America. I understand that many citizens feel the need to own guns for protection. However, scheduling gun shows for March, June, September, October and November is a bit excessive. All shows will be held in one location - at the Solano County Fairgrounds in Vallejo.

A woman who was in Chicago Police custody in connection with the fatal stabbing of her husband has been released with no charges filed against her because the stabbing was found to be in self-defense, authorities said. The woman had been in custody since her husband, 31-year-old Najja Denton, was fatally stabbed at their home in the 5100 block of South Wabash on Friday night. Police said the two were in a verbal quarrel when he was stabbed.

The university leadership seems oblivious to the fact that prohibiting guns in or around any school, from kindergarten to college, has failed to keep campuses safe. My question to the university and to the Legislature is, where do we draw the line in keeping guns out of the hands of law-abiding citizens? I say the line has already been drawn: Both the U.S. and Utah constitutions clearly say that the right of the people to keep and bear arms “shall not be infringed.”

Ultimately, yes, it's all about business. But walking out of the SHOT Show with a briefcase filled with fall delivery orders isn't the only goal. And, yes, there's a bunch of B.S. taking place during this four-day annual trade show for the hunting industry. But it's B.S. in its most useful form, brainstorming.

At midnight on Monday Sept. 13, 2004, the 10 year old U.S. ban on the sale of assault weapons expired. The National Rifle Association (NRA) claimed that the ban was "bad law," and, in any event, only restricted certain "cosmetic" weapon features. Frankly, if I find myself staring into the business end of an assault weapon, I don't much care if its capability for destruction is concrete or cosmetic. The NRA gun lobby has fiercely opposed any attempt to restrict or control the possession of firearms in general, basing their position on the Second Amendment to the Constitution, which provides for "the right to keep and bear arms."

It seems like more and more Hollywood women are taking a trip to the gun shop. Now, adding herself to the list, Alicia Keys says she is considering buying a gun for protection. The singer-and-actress had to learn to shoot in her new movie "Smokin' Aces" and now she is confident handling a firearm she is seriously contemplating buying one for her own safety. Keys - who makes her big screen acting debut in the film - said, "I've never owned a gun, but I'm seriously considering owning one now. God forbid, if anything happened I would be prepared."

Folks, back when the concealed weapons law was passed a year or so ago, my wife and I had wanted to take the training required. This training is a condition that must be met before an application for a concealed carry license can be made. Last year was a very busy year for my wife and me and we just never got around to taking the time to attend a concealed carry training program. This year, we hope, will be a little quieter. So, we decided to try to accomplish some of those things that we put off last year.

Excitement was increasing by 3 p.m. Saturday when it seemed Wall High School sophomore Anthony Freda could topple the national champion during the fourth annual Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps competition at his high school. By 6 p.m. Freda was the champ. He had out-shot the national champion, Lauren Streibel, a senior from O.J. Roberts High School in Pennsylvania, in the annual rifle competition. Streibel placed second, and Wall High School senior Brian Balitti placed third.

Lan Kosal smiles wryly as he breaks down the cost of killing a cow with a rocket-propelled grenade launcher. For $555, Mr. Lan, an arms merchant, says he will take a client to a remote field in the Cambodian countryside to obliterate a bovine with the Soviet-era armament designed to destroy tanks and cause mass casualties. When many Cambodians earn less than a dollar a day, why is this grisly recreation that is popular among backpackers so expensive? "The real cost is the cow. You have to buy it before we let you kill it," Mr. Lan explains matter-of-factly.

At sixteen years old, fudging his age, Gray was fighting fires in the ponderosa pine forests around Flagstaff, Arizona. Growing up in a rough-and-tumble atmosphere, Gray learned how to defend his rights. He also learned at an early age what he considers the sensible use of firearms in self-defense, which proved fortunate in his later years in the South coming up against Ku Klux Klansmen and others of their kind.

IA: Legal scholarship supports individual gun rights

A.J. Greffenius' Jan. 4 Iowa View suggesting that the Second Amendment does not protect an individual right to keep and bear arms is misleading ("Bearing Arms Misinterpreted as a Right of Individual"). The overwhelming weight of legal scholarship recognizes that the Second Amendment does protect an individual right.

This view is held not only by attorneys and law professors who specialize in Second Amendment scholarship, but also by the doyen of American constitutional law, Harvard law professor Lawrence Tribe. According to the attorney general of the United States only two years ago, the "Second Amendment secures a right of individuals generally, not a right of States or a right restricted to persons serving in militias."

Is closing the so-called "gun show loophole" necessary to cut down on gun violence or does it threaten the rights of Virginians to bear arms?

This year the state legislature gets to decide. Supporters call closing the loophole common sense legislation that most citizens support, but it's an idea that's been shot down more than once in the past.

Rather than fight a battle of statistics, let's use our own brains. In 2005, individuals who exercised their constitutional right to bear arms stopped a crime from happening between 2 million and 5 million times. No militia was involved.

The individual right-to-bear arms has resulted in reductions of over 60 percent in some classes of violent crime in states that have enacted right-to-carry legislation. Criminals are less likely to attack someone when the odds go up that they will be shot.

You'd think NRA leaders would be dancing and swinging from their gun racks.

Their executive vice president, Wayne LaPierre, was chosen along with former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum to accompany the Veep on an exclusive hunting trip (no accident jokes please) to Rolling Rock Club, PA earlier this month.

Eleven-year-old Kailey Leinz says closing the so-called gun-show loophole would make her and her classmates feel safer.

"We need to close it for many reasons and also so kids like me won't feel scared, scared that somebody could just come in our school and just start shooting," said the sixth-grader at Keene Mill Elementary School in Fairfax County.

Fatehi was sentenced to death for murder by a court in Iran after she stabbed, in self-defense, one of three men who attempted to rape her and her 15-year-old niece in a park in Karaj, a suburb of Tehran, in March 2005. She was 17 at the time. On June 1, 2006, following extensive international pressure and news coverage, the Head of Judiciary, Ayatollah Shahroudi, announced a stay of execution and a new trial.

On January 14, 2007, the Iranian Court recognized the incident as an act of self-defense and commuted Nazanin's death sentence.
