The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) is, of course, disappointed by todays ruling. We respectfully disagree with The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) is, of course, disappointed by todays ruling. We respectfully disagree with the courts reasoning which places our industry on a slippery slope. Todays ruling will allow ATF to demand whatever information it wants from any law-abiding retailer anywhere in the country for any reason ATF wants simply by sending a letter demanding information. While we understand ATFs motivation is to try to curtail violence in Mexico, Congress simply has not granted ATF regulatory carte blanche NSSF looks forward to having the Court of Appeals review the district courts flawed decision. |

The Glock 9 mm holstered on Sharonda Hawkins' hip is there for the Detroit mother's personal protection.
On occasion while shopping or pumping gas when her blouse or shirt rides up a bit, sight of the pistol also serves as a warning to anyone thinking of making Hawkins a crime victim.
"I've had situations where young men and it was probably in their minds to rob me when they see that I have a gun they move on," said Hawkins, 47. "I think my gun is a deterrent. It may have saved me more times than I realize." |

A Connecticut Appellate Court recently issued an order dismissing an appeal in Gilland v. Sportsmens Outpost, Inc. a Superior Court decision granting a firearm retailers motion to dismiss all claims against it pursuant to the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA). The PLCAA was passed in 2005 with broad bipartisan support. The purpose of the act is to prevent firearms manufacturers and retailers from being held liable for crimes committed with their products. In this case, the plaintiffs, who were represented by the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, sought to hold the firearms retailer liable in a wrongful death and negligence claim because a firearm had been stolen from his store. |

"You, you who hate guns, you gave me nothing.
No hope.
No tools.
All that was offered me was a life of fear, of resentment, of bitterness, of dependance...
The gun community has offered me hope and strength, and courage.
They have taught me to have belief in myself.
They have asked nothing of me in return ...." |

In todays United States v. Rehlander (1st Cir. Jan. 13, 2012), the First Circuit revisited and narrowed its precedents related to 18 U.S.C. 922(g)(4) the statute that bars gun possession by people who had at some point been committed to a mental institution in light of the Second Amendment: Benjamin Small and Nathan Rehlander were each involuntarily admitted to psychiatric hospitals under Maines emergency procedure, Me. Rev. Stat. tit. 34-B, 3863 (2011), and each was later convicted for possessing firearms after having been committed to a mental institution. 18 U.S.C. 922(g)(4) (2006). When Meredith Graves of Tennessee traveled to New York for a job interview last month and was ensnared by New Yorks restrictive gun laws, it wasnt enough that she may face criminal charges for being honest, Mayor Michael Bloomberg had to sully her reputation by alleging she possessed cocaine.
The Second Amendment Foundation, upon reviewing a video of the mayors remarks, called Bloombergs comment despicable. |

I'm also giving up on gun control.
Over the years, I've written I don't know how many columns urging that some control be placed on the sale of weapons that go bang. Dozens probably, possibly even scores of them.
...
Did it do any good? Even less than my global warming columns. There are more guns out there now than ever, and states have grown increasingly permissive about where and how people can pack heat.
In other words, the battle has been lost. The absurd arguments of the National Rifle Association and the Merchants of Death lobby have carried the day. |

"The late Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. kept guns at home in Alabama for self-defense," gun law expert John M. Snyder recalled here on the eve of the national holiday named for the civil rights leader.
"At one time," Snyder continued, "King applied for a permit to carry a concealed handgun, but was denied. He was concerned for his personal safety, just as are a lot of law-abiding American citizens.

How do I know this? Walmart is selling them.

Its safe to say that assault rifles semi-automatic military-style rifles with magazine clips that typically hold 30 rounds have come full circle in America. |

All three of them have signed on as sponsors to a bill inspired by multistate sting operations set up by the Bloomberg-led group Mayors Against Illegal Guns.
...
According to the group's website, 62 percent of sellers still made the sale, a violation of federal law. The Kansas House bill, which Kelly said was modeled after a similar effort in Oklahoma, would turn the tables on such a sting, making it a felony to knowingly provide "materially false information with intent to deceive the dealer or seller about the legality of a transfer of a firearm or ammunition." |

Kopps HB1015 would let any South Dakotan who can legally carry a gun conceal their handgun without having to get a state-issued permit.
This just doesnt penalize the citizens, to make him buy a permit to defend himself which I believe is unconstitutional, said Kopp, R-Rapid City.
Under the current system, people who want to carry a concealed weapon have to pay $10 and undergo a background check in order to get their permit. Applications can be denied for a variety of reasons, including a felonious criminal history, drug violations, a history of violence, or having been judged mentally incompetent. |

In the late summer of 2010, the ATF agent leading the failed Fast and Furious gun-smuggling operation in Arizona flew to Mexico City to help coordinate cross-border investigations of U.S. weapons used by Mexican drug cartels.
Hope A. MacAllister wanted access to police and military vaults for American weapons recovered by Mexican authorities in raids and at crime scenes. She especially was interested in firearms from another ATF investigation, code-named White Gun, that she was running. |

NSW is gun mad - and proud of it - with shooters stockpiling almost 100,000 new registered firearms in the past five years.
The number of gun licences, meanwhile, has only increased by about a fifth, or 18,852 over the same period, showing some are stocking up with numerous weapons.
There are now 763,359 registered firearms across the state, including 27,956 handguns, compared with 190,844 licences - taking the ratio to four guns for every licensed owner. In some country towns firearms outnumber people - in Ivanhoe, in the state's far west, 273 residents own 432 guns. |

Thats certainly disturbing. This finding probably discouraged many firearm purchases. No one questioned it until Dave Kopel wrote The Fallacy of 43 to 1 (http://old.nationalreview.com/kopel/kopel013101.shtml).
Now for the rest of the story.
When the studys methodology is applied to nonfirearm deaths, the flaw upon which its based becomes apparent. The ratio of nonfirearm deaths (murder, suicide, accidental death) compared to justifiable homicides is 99 to 1. That means a nonfirearm assault is 99 times more likely to kill a household member than to kill a criminal in self-defense. See the problem? |

Of all of the candidates, the only one who could be characterized as being agenda-driven for restoration of the Founders Constitutional principles, and with personal ambition being a secondary, or even tertiary issue, is Ron Paul. Paul has a long and consistent record of unwavering support for, and defense of, the Second Amendment and the Constitution. The problem with Paul however, is that his agenda is perceived as too aggressive and there is significant doubt as to his ability to be able to put all of the pieces together to make it work. A president has only limited power and even if Paul exercised that power to its utmost, there is much to his agenda that would require support from the Congress support that he simply would not get. |

Between 500 and a thousand gun rights advocates will gather at the Virginia Capitol Monday to talk to lawmakers about their lobbying agenda this session.
Virginia gun rights advocates believe they've got a good shot this year at getting what they want at the General Assembly. In years past their legislation would make it through the Republican controlled house but later die in the Senate.
"Do I think we have a better chance this year than last? Yes, significantly, said gun rights advocate Philip Van Cleave. |
