Some have suggested that Reeves, 71, may have felt legitimately threatened and bullied by the younger Mr. Oulson, and that the thrown popcorn could qualify as an assault on an elderly person, a felony worthy of self-defense in Florida. That tack toward a possible stand your ground defense has already been dubbed the popcorn defense.
But in a country in which the number of permits to carry concealed weapons has skyrocketed, Oulsons death has also become one more piece of evidence of what some see as the sinister and frightening side of expanded gun rights. In that view, the act of carrying a hidden gun in public is as much about wielding power over fellow citizens as self-defense. |

Target shooting has big bucks benefits for Washington State, according to a report released today by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, which is gathered in Las Vegas for the annual Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade (SHOT) Show.

Federal forces and heavily armed vigilantes are warily watching each other in a violence-wracked farming area of western Mexico after one deadly clash and a failure by leaders from both sides to work out a deal on disarming.
Officials from the federal and Michoacan state governments met until late Tuesday with leaders of "self-defense" groups that have increasingly been confronting a drug cartel, but it adjourned with no agreements.
Still, while refusing to give up their weapons, vigilante leaders appeared to be seeking a cooling of tensions. |

This week two new bills were introduced in Mississippi that, if enacted, could change how the Second Amendment is interpreted in that state.
The bills, HB179 and HB231, submitted by different state house representatives, propose changes to the states law. The first would limit protection from criminal liability in self-defense cases to within 30 feet of the home. The second would make all ammunition purchases public information under threat of fine. |

"This could be a situation where Stand Your Ground is used. The defendant's statements to police is information that could be used to establish self-defense," said Kenneth B. Nunn, professor of law of the University of Florida's Levin College of Law. "But part of self defense requires you to retreat if you can do so in complete safety."
Ed.: No, SYG removed the duty to retreat. Whether or not the shooter's actions were lawful is an open question, but he didn't have any duty to retreat, assuming he wasn't the first person to break the law during the altercation. |

Florida is moving toward a Defensive Display law that includes the possibility of a warning shot or shots being acceptable as a part of self defense, if no innocents are injured.
Arizona passed a similar law several years ago after the aggressors in self defense situations were using the criminal justice system to have the defenders arrested on aggravated assault charges. Arizonas law does not include warning shots. |

Lawmakers turned back an attempt Wednesday to lessen the criminal penalty for bringing a gun into a school.
House Bill 1048 originally would have dropped that crime from a felony to a misdemeanor.
But the House Public Policy Committee amended the legislation to retain current law as a felony.
Rep. Tom Dermody, R-LaPorte chairman of the panel said he was uncomfortable with reducing the criminal penalty for the crime. |

None of these arguments persuaded U.S. District Judge Edmond Chang, who ruled that the ban on gun shops was unconstitutional. He acknowledged the citys fundamental duty to combat gun violence and protect its citizens, but said, Chicagos ordinance goes too far in outright banning legal buyers and legal dealers from engaging in lawful acquisitions and lawful sales of firearms, and at the same time the evidence does not support that the complete ban sufficiently furthers the purposes the ordinance tries to serve. |

In other words: a) the defendant almost certainly wasnt involved in an act of self-defense, so Stand Your Ground likely wont even be an option, and b) there being no way that he could have retreated anyway, whether or not he could have done so is irrelevant to the case. Even if the killer somehow manages to turn this into a self-defense case, Stand Your Ground will almost certainly play no role. |

Movie producer Harvey Weinstein announced for the first time on Howard Sterns radio show that he is making a full feature drama to try to destroy the National Rifle Association. Mr. Stern asked Mr. Weinstein on Wednesday whether he owned a gun. The Hollywood heavyweight replied that he did not and never would. I dont think we need guns in this country. And I hate it, the producer said. I think the NRA is a disaster area. Mr. Weinstein then revealed his secret project about the gun rights group. I shouldnt say this, but Ill tell it to you, Howard, he said. Im going to make a movie with Meryl Streep, and were going to take this head-on. And theyre going to wish they werent alive after Im done with them. |

"Despite my opinions about the MVP in .223 Remington, I think the folks over at Mossberg might have a winner on their hands with the new .308 version. Theres a market for a ready-to-go magazine fed .308 Win rifle, and the MVP fills that niche quite nicely. The gun ships with a 10 round Mossberg magazine, but can also accept DPMS magazines and Magpul PMAGs." ... |

"Kel-Tec extensively used 3D printing to prototype their new RMR-30 carbine, a .22 Magnum that uses the same magazines as the PMR-30 pistol. The carbine has a retractable stock, a 16-inch barrel, and uses a straight blowback action, instead of the delayed blowback of the PMR-30 pistol. The RMR30 required a redesign of almost the entire firearm, even though the magazines are interchangeable . . ." ... |

"Crimson Trace is the top of the mark when it comes to firearm mounted laser systems. They make a set of lasergrips for damn near every handgun out there, but if that doesnt work for your special snowflake then theres always the Rail Master line of rail mounted devices. They released the red laser version a while back, but now theres a combination green laser and white light box that straps to your guns accessory rail. MSRP is about $379, and for a nightstand gun it seems like a perfect solution." |
