MI: Snyder vetoes measure that would have let certain people carry concealed guns

Gov. Rick Snyder vetoed legislation Thursday that would have let some people subject to personal protection orders obtain a concealed pistol license.

In a veto letter to the Republican-led Legislature, Snyder said the bills "may increase the risks faced by victims of domestic abuse."

The legislation would have abolished county concealed weapon licensing boards and transferred their duties to county clerks or law enforcers a change the Republican governor supports.

But he agreed with gun control and anti-domestic violence advocates who had criticized a provision that would have allowed subjects of protection orders to get a concealed weapon permit unless the order specifically restricted gun use.

Gov. Rick Snyder on Thursday vetoed legislation that would have overhauled the concealed pistol permit application process in Michigan, citing a provision he said could jeopardize existing protections for domestic abuse victims.

Senate Bill 789 and 790, backed by the National Rifle Association but opposed by prominent gun reform groups, would have lifted a blanket restriction preventing the subject of any personal protection order from obtaining a CPL.

The Republican governor, in a veto letter to lawmakers, said the legislation included a number of reforms I support and indicated that he looked forward to working with the Legislature on the issue in the new session, which formally began Wednesday.

The Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, which allows crossing state lines with a concealed gun, regardless of states inner policies, missed being passed by just 3 votes. With the wide bipartisan support it had seen in the past, it will most likely be reintroduced in the 114th Congress.

The bill is sponsored by republican senator John Cornyn from Texas, and was first introduced a year ago. 24 of its cosponsors are republican, one a democrat. It received 44 republican and 13 democratic yes votes.

Vancouver resident Frank Decker put his Keep Calm and Open Carry Jim shirt on Thursday and joined hundreds of other gun-rights activists at the state Capitol in Olympia to protest what he believes to be the erosion of his Second Amendment rights.

The protest was fueled by opponents of Initiative 594, which voters passed in November. The measure expanded background checks on gun sales. But the Jim Deckers shirt was referring to was state Rep. Jim Moeller, D-Vancouver, and Deckers own personal protest to a comment Moeller made earlier this year.
