One of the main criticisms of the 1911 platform is the (comparatively) low ammunition capacity compared to polymer-frame, striker-fired semi-automatic pistols. This criticism has some validity, of course. Traditional 1911s use seven- or eight-round magazines, usually in .45 ACP, while the polymer handguns boast 9mm magazines often holding twice that number.

If any phrase could be used to collectively describe Great Britains WWII small arms, it would be Plug Ugly! Be that as it may, I must paraphrase Forrest Gumps famous saying, Ugly is as ugly does. Many high ranking British officers were found wanting between 1939 and 1945 but the everyday Tommy was well respected by allies and enemies alike, regardless of how ugly his weapons were. The same goes for Commonwealth sidekicks from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India and Poland who fought beside them. |

What are the chances that the 2024 presidential election will not dissolve into chaos? In our minds eye, we can already see it: long lines, delays, grainy video of somebody doing something, court orders, injunctions, amici curiae stacked like cordwood. Protestors and provocateurs. Oath Keepers and Antifa. Thick blue lines of cops, clouds of tear gas, maybe even national guardsmen and federal troops. A culmination on January 6, 2025or perhaps the turmoil will last longer than that. |

Dozens of congressional Republicans have thrown their support behind the National Rifle Association in a lawsuit against a New York state regulator who allegedly tried to blacklist the group and deny it financial services because of its viewpoint on guns. Eighteen Republican senators and more than a dozen GOP House lawmakers sent the U.S. Supreme Court an amicus brief in support of the gun rights groups, claiming the First and Second amendments are at stake. |

Gov. Tim Walz was in Iowa over the weekend ahead of the states caucuses to counter Republican messaging. And 2023 was a record year for travelers showing up at airports with firearms. At Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, officers stopped 53 firearms from entering the airport or being carried on planes. |

Gun sales in North Carolina increased following the repeal of a state law requiring a purchase permit for buying a handgun in March 2023. In March, the legislature overrode Gov. Roy Coopers veto and repealed a law requiring a purchase permit from the county sheriff to buy a handgun. A background check is still required. |

Taking a commanding lead of the handgun race for December was a limited-edition new release from Smith & Wesson's Performance Center: the M&P 9 M2.0 Metal Spec Series. Smith & Wesson loaded this pistol with PC features, and buyers get a whole kit including four mags and extras like a Spec Series challenge coin and folder knife to sweeten the deal. Climbing up a spot from November's ranking, we had the Glock 43, followed by its trusty cousin: the Glock 19 Gen 5. It wouldn't feel quite right to close out the year without the G19 on this list after its faithful presence all year, and it didn't disappoint. |

Over the last few years weve discussed the use of .22 LR handguns, pistols and revolvers, .22 LR rifles and .22 Mag. (.22 WMR) revolvers for use as low-recoil defensive options. But folks looking over this list will notice the absence of any conversation regarding semi-automatic .22 Mag. pistols. Before now there were simply not enough pistol models to choose from to warrant the conversation. But as of 2023, Rock Island Armory is offering several variants of the steel-framed 1911 pattern Model XT 22 (well save these for another day) and polymer-framed options are now available from KelTec, Walther and Smith & Wesson. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed; as they are in almost every kingdom of Europe. The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any bands of regular troops that can be, on any pretense, raised in the United States. Noah Webster in "An Examination into the Leading Principles of the Federal Constitution," 1787, in Paul Ford, ed., Pamphlets on the Constitution of the United States, at p. 56 (New York, 1888). |
