"Hunters drew more attention to it from their insecurity than Jeep would have ever got on their own," PETA president Ingrid Newkirk said in a telephone interview. "So Jeep won."
In the post-Sept. 11 world, Americans like "life-affirming messages" of rescuing people from those who terrorize others with guns, Newkirk said.
Since she considers hunters to be "gun nuts" who terrorize animals in the woods, then rescuing animals from them fits this ideology, Newkirk claimed. |

"The conversion of rights to authorize acts might at first appear to be no big thing; that is, until the control inherent to authorization is actually exercised. Thus, for example, gun registration becomes licensing becomes regulation becomes restriction becomes confiscation. And there are always good reasons given, usually even believed by those giving them at the time, for the initial inroads taken." --Edgar Steele, Attorney At Law |

A federal appeals court ruled last week that Philadelphia may not sue the gun industry for creating a "public nuisance." The decision is the most recent action on one of 30 similar lawsuits winding through federal and state courts. Counties, cities and states have sued gun manufacturers to recoup costs they say they've incurred from having to prevent, clean up after, and care for the victims of gun violence. |

Chill shadows were gathering across the Central Texas ridge as I slipped through a scrabble of brush and prickly pear. I was "still hunting," easing along the edges of broken cover and hoping to spot a deer.
I was also stepping back in time; a lever-action carbine with open sights rested in the crook of my left arm. My right fingers were curled through the lever, and the thumb rested lightly on the half-cocked hammer. |

Dead deer. You've got to love them.
OK. Not everybody does, but if you're a hunter, you do.
That's why we crowd around the beds of pickup trucks at game-checking stations, why we check out the snapshots on the bulletin boards at country stores, why most national magazines include photo galleries featuring everyday hunters and their deer. |

Odds remain low that any given flight will have plainclothes marshals aboard.
It would take 120,000 marshals or more--men and women who usually work in teams--to cover the 30,000-plus daily flights in the United States, security experts and former government officials said. Such a program could easily cost more than $10 billion a year. Budget figures for the current program are classified. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
Some writers have so confounded society with government, as to leave little or no distinction between them; whereas they are not only different, but have different origins ... Society is in every state a blessing, but Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state, an intolerable one. THOMAS PAINE |
