Colin Waugh bought a shotgun four weeks before Novembers election. An unapologetic liberal, he was no fan of firearms. He had never owned one before. But Waugh, a 31-year-old from Independence, Missouri, couldnt shake his fears of a Donald Trump presidency and all of the chaos it could bring. He imagined hate crimes and violence waged by extremists emboldened by the Republican nominees brash, divisive rhetoric. He pictured state-sanctioned roundups of Muslims, gays, and outspoken critics.

The primary sponsor of a Wyoming Senate bill that would have banned the sale of guns to anyone on an FBI terrorist watch list says he is withdrawing the measure after learning more about the watch list and how it works. Sen, James Anderson (R-Natrona County) says when he proposed banning guns sales to people listed on the agencys no-fly list he was under the impression that the people on that list had been convicted of crimes and were known criminals or terrorists. |

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., applied in 1956 for a permit to carry a handgun for self-defense but was denied by governing authorities who enjoyed may issue-style discretion. Dr. King applied in Alabama, which was under no legal obligation at the time to issue the permit. Rather, police had final say in whether an application was approved. This put the citizen in the same predicament that residents of may issue states find themselves in today.

Conceal and carry classes aim to create gun safety in the state. In order to have a Conceal and Carry Weapon license, it's required that you go through proper training. That's why classes are offered across the state, like in Portage County. The Portage County Sheriffs Office has a CCW class this week. The department offers the course three times a year. They started by providing two classes a year, but after a high interest in enrollment, they've increased the number to three sessions.

If one of President Obama's executive goals was to keep more guns out of the hands of Americans, he can pretty safely mark that one as a failure. According to data from the FBIs National Instant Criminal Background Check System, widely considered to be the best metric in measuring firearms purchases in the United States, gun sales soared 60 percent under Obama's eight year stint in office compared to the number of firearms sold during President George W. Bushs two-term presidency. |

After last year's news-dominating surge in homicides, everyone in Chicago is looking for answers. A new study of last years spike in gun violence, published on Tuesday by the University of Chicagos Crime Lab, is more descriptive than prescriptive, but the prevalence and increased deadliness of firearms in Chicago it finds jumps off the page. Homicides in Chicago involve guns at rates higher than many other cities; guns being used are more lethal than in the past; and non-gun crimes arent rising the same way gun crimes are, the study determined. |

A Tennessee lawmaker is hoping to loosen Tennessees gun carry laws. State Rep. Micah Van Huss, a Republican from Jonesborough, has introduced a bill to eliminate the need for a permit to open carry a handgun. Under the law, you would still need a permit to carry a concealed handgun, but if you wear the gun openly, you would not need a permit. |
