"'If the representatives of the people betray their constituents, there is then no resource left but in the exertion of that original right of self-defense. .. The citizens must rush tumultuously to arms'"
"--Alexander Hamilton, Essay 28, The Federalist Papers"

"The American Revolutionary War officially began when British soldiers came to the peaceful hamlets of Lexington and Concord to disarm our founding fathers. Little did they know, that action would spark an arduous war that they (the most powerful army on Earth) could not win. On that day, our founding fathers chose to fight instead of live under tyranny. ..." ...

"What is it that makes America a great country? That question will probably create quite a debate. There are those who do not think this is a great country, but ask them where they would rather live. I believe there are two major elements that make this country great -- freedom and capitalism. Unfortunately both of these are under attack." ...

"The Second amendment is constantly under attack and the rights of citizens to bear arms are routinely violated. Look at what happened in New Orleans when the mayor ordered police to enter citizens' homes and confiscate any weapons that they had." ...

"What's society like today?"

"Well, you've got corporate corruption, armed robbery, and murder happening daily."

"You've got the good people trying to live their lives while the bad people feed off them. And then you've got the scant few in the law enforcement business trying their best to stem the flow of lawlessness."

"That's not much different from the way things were in the Old West, with one major difference: everybody had a gun back then."

"Now, in my opinion, they ought to bring this system back. I'm stumped as to why it left in the first place." ...

"Can't you just see the difference? Instead of helpless citizenry powerless to stop the tide of lawbreakers, we'd be an armed posse ready to gun them down." ...

"Week after week, I see articles from around the world about incoming illegal guns. Today, I read an article which wonders where they come from."

"This is not even germane to the predicament, for it reflects a misunderstanding of the very nature of the problem, and therefore its straightforward solutions."

"Many nations oppose weapons for oppressive reasons, not for reasons of justice or for keeping the peace. For many nations, keeping the peace is code for oppression, silencing opposition and delivering widespread, un-opposed murder. For them, guns in the hands of the people would mean justice, and not the kind they would appreciate." ...

NE: Handguns would be banned from college campuses

FULL TEXT BELOW:

Concealed handguns could not be carried on college campuses under a bill (LB491) introduced Wednesday by Senator John Harms of Scottsbluff. The Legislature passed a law last year allowing people to carry concealed guns, but it prohibits concealed weapons in some places, including schools.

Other places not wanting guns are required to post "conspicuous notice" that handguns are banned there.

Attorney General Jon Bruning ruled last year that colleges and universities are not considered schools under the act. That prompted the University of Nebraska and other institutions to post signs.

Wednesday's bill would add language banning concealed handguns from the grounds of any private or public university or college.

"Unfortunately for average citizens of Chicago, the possession of handguns has basically been banned since the early 1980s. However, if you live in the Windy City and would like to own one for personal protection or target shooting, there is an avenue available to you: Become a City Alderman!"

"Apparently, these Chicago officials are part of an elite ruling class that can exercise their innate and (supposedly) protected right to keep and bear arms while forbidding you to do so. I was not aware of this discriminatory and despicable policy until I read an article from The Chicago Tribune reporting on a criminal raid of Chicago Alderman Arenda Troutman that resulted in the discovery of her legal .357 revolver." ...

"The ethics bill before the Senate not only cracks down on lawmakers, but also subjects politically active ministers and neighborhood groups to the same rules as K Street lobbyists."

"Under the legislation, grass-roots organizations that attempt to 'influence the general public' to contact members of Congress would have to register as lobbyists and file financial reports -- or face a $200,000 fine. The requirements could apply to a preacher who goes on TV or radio and tells listeners to call their congressman in support of a particular issue ..." ...

"They may be performing the legislative equivalent of spitting in the wind, but bless the state legislators who are trying to make the world a little safer. Their strategy: close a loophole that allows gun sales to people who shouldn't have guns."

"That loophole says that some sales at gun shows, those by unlicensed dealers, don't have to go through the usual background checks. Those checks make sure a gun purchaser isn't a convicted felon or the subject of a restraining order for threatening, stalking or harassing an intimate partner or child - groups that no reasonable person thinks it would be a good idea to arm." ...

Submitter's Note: The crime of dealing in firearms without a federal firearms license carries a maximum five year sentence of imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine.

"Confronted with a deer whose antlers were tangled in a rope swing at a rural home, two officers saw no good choices. They weren't about to try to free the animal themselves. It weighed several hundred pounds and was thrashing wildly. A bullet in the skull seemed the alternative." ...

"Then Deputy Jeff Miller thought of the stun gun, commonly called a Taser, after its maker, used to immobilize out-of-control prisoners or suspects."

"Zap!"

"The deer stopped moving. The officers, one a sheriff's deputy, the other a state trooper, untangled the rope, which was dangling from a tree limb, and freed the buck."

"Not long after, the deer 'took off happy as a clam,' Strovink said. 'That was pretty good thinking.'"
