MI: Jury finds open-carry advocate not guilty after arrest by Detroit police

After Detroit police arrested 24-year-old Elijah Woody in September, officials said they had an open-and-shut case.

They claimed to have dash-cam footage that proved conclusively that Woody, who admits to regularly openly and legally carrying firearms, illegally had a handgun concealed in his waistband beneath a puffy coat on Sept. 13.

That evidence apparently wasn't quite as conclusive in the eyes of a jury who found Woody not guilty of the felony carrying a concealed weapon charge Friday.

He maintained he was openly carrying his $550 Glock handgun.

"I don't have a CPL," he said, "so what in my right mind would make me want to hide it."

The 83rd Precinct officers raided the ground-floor apartment of the Bushwick home Friday morning, and found a military-grade rocket launcher in the home, sources said.
The rocket-launcher was a single-use weapon and had already been used, sources said. It cannot be re-armed.

A Glasgow Police Department officer is suing a Glasgow store and its owners after he suffered a hand injury when a gun he was handling accidentally discharged.

Darrell Smith asked March 26 to look at a Sig Sauer Copperhead .380-caliber handgun that was in a display case at Barren Outdoors on Scottsville Road, and his lawsuit alleges that an employee handed the gun to Smith without performing safety checks.

SUBMITTER'S COMMENT: And apparently the officer also failed to perform safety checks.
Many good comments.

Smart Guns Save Lives. So Where Are They?

Mr. Kristof's column starts off with a lie: "Smart Guns Save Lives."
No "smart gun" has ever saved a life.
After we slog through his polemic far enough, we discover the source of the lie: Smart guns are going to save lives.
That's an opinion; it's not a fact.
Then he says we must do as he wishes "for the children."
He does lament the unintended consequences of the stumbling, bumbling NJ state legislature's knee-jerk anti-gun stupidity.
Any firearm which can be digitally activated can be digitally deactivated.
Mr. Kristof is a skillful writer.
But as his fellow NY Times Op-Ed columnist Maureen Dowd says in her piece today, "Artful falsehood is more dangerous than artless falsehood, because fewer people see through it."

In the wake of Oscar nominations, Academy members begin buzzing over recent criticism of the films subject, Chris Kyle
Even as American Sniper breaks January box-office records and revels in six Oscar nominations, criticism over the subject of the film, sharpshooter Chris Kyle, is rising and reaching into the Academy of Motion Picture of Arts and Sciences, which votes on the Academy Awards.
Over the weekend, multiple Academy members told TheWrap that they had been passing around a recent article by Dennis Jett in The New Republic that attacks the film for making a hero out of Kyle, who said: The enemy are savages and despicably evil, and his only regret is that I didnt kill more.

Democracy works for those who show up. Too many gun owners stayed home in the last election. If gun owners can't be bothered to vote, should they complain as they lose their legal right to own firearms?

Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America is thrilled with Blantons opposition.

According to Fox 4 KBTV, Blanton said his reasoning for opposing open carry is that citizens are going to call [police] when they see someone carrying a weapon.

The threat Operation Choke Point poses to the Second Amendment has been real on paper without being tangible for quite some time. Now, however, with at least one gun store owner talking about the pressure brought to bear against his business by Operation Choke Pointany abstraction associated with the Department of Justices operation has vanished.

Math, science, social studies, language arts --- all are universally accepted as the core subjects students should be taught.

But what about gun rights and safety?

Several South Carolina legislators think those topics should be added to the list, with at least one member of the Beaufort County Legislative Delegation among them.

Two bills --- one in the House and the other in the Senate --- call for bringing Second Amendment-related curricula into the schools, with students being taught about gun rights and safety. The Senate bill even suggests creating an elective that involves marksmanship training.

Last week I wrote here about actor Liam Neesoms incredible, yet typically liberal, hypocrisy in condemning widespread American gun ownership while he himself makes millions starring in movies depicting extreme gun violence, most of it wrought by his character. Well, Liams getting his wish, at least in his own particular situation. The company the furnished the weapons used in the series of Taken films, PARA USA, has decided it will no longer furnish firearms for any movie in which Neesom appears. Heres the article from Daily Caller reporting their announcement:

In this day and age, its difficult to believe the naivet of people who want to keep stripping down the Second Amendment. As someone who has worked with law enforcement here and abroad, I have been warning people since events like the Beslan massacre that these types of attacks will happen here.

Unlike us Americans, terrorists dont feel the need to rush in accomplishing their objectives. Theyll strike when the moment is right, which is when we dont expect it or when were least prepared by letting down our guard.

Pennsylvania Act 192 went into effect Jan. 5. It enables anyone or any organization adversely affected by a local gun ordinance to sue the municipality; legal standing is afforded even if the plaintiff doesnt reside in the municipality. The National Rifle Association, a gun rights group based in Virginia, is suing Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and the City of Lancaster Lancaster over its 2009 ordinance that requires gun owners to report lost or stolen guns to the police.

Representative Mike Honda (D-California) is taking aim at the Second Amendment with 3 proposed bills, which include making it illegal to make your own gun at home.

These bills are sensible, reasonable measures to limit the damage that can be inflicted by guns and those who mean harm with them, Congressman Honda said. We have seen too many people injured and killed by guns to just stand by and do nothing. These bills will modernize our gun laws to reflect how weapons are currently getting into the wrong hands.

Nationwide, more and more women are getting firearms.

According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, 80 percent of gun retailers saw an increase in women between 2011 and 2012. The number of women who owned guns spiked to 23 percent in 2011, compared to 13 percent in a 2005 Gallup poll, according to Natalie Fosters website, The Girls Guide to Guns.

A store clerk at the Jefferson Golden Dawns Sporting Goods department said the same trend can be seen in Ashtabula County.

Post-Gazette columnist and former ambassador Dan Simpson failed to fact check when writing Whitewashing the Gun Lobby (Jan. 14), which claimed the National Rifle Association serves as a front to increase sales for manufacturers.

If Mr. Simpson had done the research, he would know the NRA is staunchly committed to protecting the Second Amendment rights of its 5 million dues-paying members. Like it or not, the NRA vigorously defends the principles those members hold dear, as would be expected of any membership-based organization.

FL: We don't need guns on college campuses

Although we support a person's right to own a gun, we can't justify the need for those weapons to be carried by students, faculty or others on college and university campuses in the state.

The criminal justice committee in the Florida House of Representatives will begin considering such a bill when it meets Tuesday. The bill, filed by Rep. Greg Stuebe, R-Sarasota, would allow for people with concealed weapons licenses to carry guns on campuses. A similar bill also has been filed in the Senate by Greg Evers, R-Baker. The bills have failed in the past, and we see no reason that it should be any different this time.
