Starting Tuesday, Jan. 1, a number of new laws will begin to take effect in Oregon. House Bill 4145, or the 'boyfriend loophole' bill, will allow police to take guns away from those who have been convicted of domestic violence, even if the abuser isn't married to or living with their victim. |

Wichita amassed more homicides in 2018 than in any year since 1995. The Wichita Eagle reports that at least 43 people died by homicide in Wichita over the past year, up five from 2017. Wichita police say the increase can in part be attributed to self-defense killings, which increased by five from three to eight. Kansas is among several states where residents have no legal obligation to retreat from an attacker in a place where they are lawfully present. |

Walther rocked the action pistol world with the Q5 Match, a gun immediately embraced by competitors and so seemingly flawless that it begged the question of whether it could be improved upon. The answer may well be no, as far as the limits of the material from which it is fabricated polymer. So, what did the company do to satisfy its own impulse to innovate? It changed the frame material. |

Hundreds of gun owning Floridians have been ordered to surrender their firearms under a new Red-Flag law signed by the governor just three weeks after a gunman entered Stoneman Douglas High School and opened fire. The Risk Protection Order, signed by Florida Gov. Rick Scott, essentially strips a persons second amendment rights if a task force team and a judge believe it is warranted meaning if the person shows any signs of being a threat to themselves or others. |

Tired of making the same old resolutions year after year? If my guess is correct, most of us still need to shave off a few pounds, get organized, learn a new skill or spend more time with the folks we care about. But rather than trot out the hackneyed goals that we've all learned to ignore by mid March, I decided that 2019 would be a good year to slate some resolutions that are not only do-able, but enjoyable too. Here are six New Year's resolutions for fans of the shooting sports.

When the Baltimore Police Department (BPD) announced its December gun buyback program, some Baltimore residents surely cheered with great enthusiasm at the opportunity to exchange their firearms and high-capacity magazines for cash. Others, however, likely saw an opportunity to lawfully game the system at the taxpayers expense. |

Just minutes into the start of the new year, Monica Schaefer's grandson became Chicago's first shooting victim of 2019. "He came running down screaming, 'Grandma, I'm shot,' and I didn't know where he was shot at," Schaefer said of her 12-year-old grandson, Javonta. According to police, Javonta was looking out of a window at home in the 6500 block of South Union Street at around midnight when bullets flew through the glass. |

Modern sporting rifles -- semi-automatic long guns based on the AR-15 design -- are an extremely popular rifle among gun owners, but there are plenty of other semi-automatic rifles on the market that are in high demand with gun buyers. To see which rifles people are buying these days, I turned to GunBroker.com, the world's largest online auction site for firearms and accessories, which every month publishes the five best-selling firearms on its Gun Genius Opens a New Window. |

For the second year in a row, gun violence in Chicago fell. Homicides in 2018 dropped nearly 28 percent over 2016, to 561, and shootings plunged nearly 33 percent, to 2,391. The decline is a welcome development for a city whose struggle with gun violence has been the focus of national headlines and political pronouncements, particularly from President Donald Trump.

The state announced grants to non-profit organizations to combat gun violence through the SNUG program. SNUG spells GUNS backwards and the program aims to curb gun violence and save lives by intervening in the aftermath of shootings to prevent retaliation, working with high-risk youths to connect them to services and programs, and other community engagement initiatives. Family Services of Westchester in Mount Vernon will receive $290,500 through the program. Yonkers YMCA will receive $355,820. Family Services Inc. of Poughkeepsie will get $305,100.
