In a post-Columbine world, guns and schools have become practically inseparable topics.
As the number of school shootings continues to rise, what was once a hypothetical is now an alarming reality. Students are coming to school armed. Americans are facing the facts and have raised a new question in the guns-in-schools debate. Should educators be permitted to carry guns to school? Knoxville teens let us know what they think about safety at their schools.
Jolie Spiegelman, 9th grade, Webb School of Knoxville
Do you think teachers/administrators with a proper permit should be allowed to carry a gun to school? Why?
No, because guns aren't safe. |

This rare (in New York) oasis of relative freedom in a sea of overregulation survives in the Empire State largely because nobody ever had much reason to take notice. Criminals don't need to mess with loose gunpowder, percussion caps, lead bullets and grease. They just go to the black market and buy whatever modern weapons suit their fancy. So, frankly, does most everybody else. The usual estimate of illegal firearms in New York City is two million, as jaded urbanites apply the same attitude to gun control that has seen them through Prohibition, vice laws, the war on drugs and the rest of the regulatory state. |

On the eve of the inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama, an ad has appeared in local newspapers promoting Tuesday as "National Buy A Gun Day." That message is being echoed in online postings as well. The ad also claims the Obama administration could be the most anti-gun rights team ever elected to the White House.
Those behind the ad have been visiting local gun shops to trumpet that message as well.
"He said he was going to place an ad to make a statement about the Second Amendment and people's right to keep and bear arms," said Dan Mumaugh, who works at Ozark Armory, a gun shop in Springdale. |

A bill that would require Wyoming judges to warn defendants that they would lose their federal gun rights by pleading guilty to misdemeanor domestic violence charges received preliminary approval in the state Senate on Monday.
The Senate unanimously approved Senate File 70, sponsored by Sen. Cale Case, R-Lander. The bill would also classify misdemeanor domestic violence as a serious offense requiring defendants to have lawyers.
Speaking in favor of the bill at a hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee earlier Monday, Case said, "We still have a situation in the United States of America where you can lose a constitutional right, the Second Amendment, for a misdemeanor crime." |

America has essentially been split into two irreconcilable solitudes...such that neither side is particularly interested in reconciliation or co-existence. So the question is at what point will people start reaching for those Second Amendment-protected arms to initiate change? The Second Amendment is pretty unambiguous in stating that, a well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. Its entirely possible that the reason so many liberal Democrats, including the new President, are calling the Constitution a living, breathing document in their wish to change it to suit their vision of America and avoid a confrontation with the people. |

Ten thousand National Guardsmen, 7,500 active-duty soldiers, 25,000 cops from "99 federal, state and local law-enforcement agencies." A city "honeycombed" with "communication command centers" spying on supposedly free Americans with 5,265 surveillance cameras. And, as if we arent already up to our eyeballs in goons, an entire brigade of the US Army on call. The cost for this hyperbolic hysteria? Hundreds of millions at a time when many taxpayers cant scrape together the next months mortgage. All for an inauguration that has attracted no "specific threats." |

The outgoing acting director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives says violence along the Mexican border is the greatest challenge facing his yet-to-be-named successor.
Michael Sullivan, who leaves his post Tuesday, said violent drug-trafficking organizations are killing police, government officials and innocent civilians, and that the ATF needs to work more closely with both Mexican authorities and the roughly 6,000 gun dealers along the Southwest border.
The dealers play a key role in helping trace the source of weapons in Mexico, nearly all of which are suspected to be smuggled from the U.S... "We certainly haven't been able to stop the flow, but I think we're making huge progress... |

Recently, a friend sent me a sobering video clip...Dr. Susan Gratia-Hupp testifying before the U.S. Senate... Ms. Gratia-Hupp described the fatal mistake of not carrying her handgun the day she went with her parents to a cafeteria. An insane gunman burst in, spraying gunfire and killing both her parents along with many others... "I've been sitting here getting more and more fed up with all of this talk about these pieces of machinery having no legitimate sporting purpose. No legitimate hunting purpose. People, that is NOT THE POINT of the Second Amendment. The Second Amendment is not about duck hunting it's about our rights to protect OURSELVES from all of YOU guys up there." In other words, gun ownership protects US from THEM. |

On Thursday, I discussed St. Louis Ward 1 Alderman Charles Quincy Troupe's advice to residents of crime-ridden north St. Louis to take upon themselves the responsibility for their own defense against criminals. On Friday, the focus was on St. Louis Police Chief Daniel Isom's pretty clear disapproval of the idea. Today, let's take a look at Mayor Francis Slay's reaction. A St. Louis alderman's idea to arm his constituents with handguns to fight crime in his neighborhood is the "perfect storm" of demagoguery and timing. |

I invite all patriotic Americans to boycott the TV networks and other channels as they coronate a new emperor today, and instead join me in going to your local firing range to shoot off some rounds as Barack Obama is sworn into office.
What better way to note the Inauguration of America's most anti-gun President in history than to use one of those handguns he despises to do some target practice at the range?

"A man was shot by a resident of a home he was allegedly invading on the West Side late Sunday.
About 10 p.m., a man in his 20s was allegedly committing a home invasion and a resident inside the home at 4453 W. Cortez St. shot him, according to a Harrison District police lieutenant.
Charges were pending Monday morning against the man shot, who was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital in an unidentified condition.
Police have not ruled out the possibility that the shooter would face charges also."

Submitter's note: Chicago has a total handgun ban, but Illinois law decriminalizes using a gun for defense even when a ban is in effect. This should be interesting. |

In November 1964, a group of black American citizens in Jonesboro, Louisiana led by Earnest "Chilly Willy" Thomas and Frederick Douglas Kirkpatrick founded a militia to protect civil rights workers against the violence of the Ku Klux Klan. They called it the Deacons for Defense and Justice. Most of them were war veterans with combat experience from the Korean War and World War II, and they armed themselves with military pattern semi-automatic rifles, carbines and pistols. Ironically, these are the same types of firearms that liberal politicians are seeking to ban today as so-called "assault weapons."

One by one, local governments have filed lawsuits that try to hold firearms manufacturers responsible for gun violence on city streets. And, one by one, the lawsuits have either been dismissed by courts or dropped. Until last week... Gary, a city of 96,000 with one of the nation's highest homicide rates, filed its lawsuit in 1999. It argues that gun manufacturers including Smith & Wesson, Beretta and Colt -- and several gun dealers are liable for gun violence because they readily supply handguns they know will reach criminals, juveniles and others forbidden from buying them, and cast a "willful blindness" toward a lucrative illegal trade The defendants vehemently deny any improper conduct. Gun control advocates see...as long overdue |

Try and believe this.
"The prospects are probably good that he will be confirmed," said Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala. No Republican senator has yet come out against the nominee.
Eric Holder is a totalitarian monster who believes that individuals should not be able to defend themselves, even within their own homes, because the second Amendment, to him, is a "collective right."

Local environmentalists and others are expressing surprise and disappointment over a change in federal law this month that makes it legal to bring concealed weapons into Muir Woods National Monument, Point Reyes National Seashore and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. To many, the idea of guns being brought to Muir Woods seems at odds with its tranquil character, where people come to escape urban life to feel at one with nature. "Unbelievable," said Richard Watson of Greenbrae, who leads hikes for the Sierra Club's Marin Group. "When you go into Mother Nature and places like Muir Woods, and you have a rule like this, it is particularly obscene." |

Deadly force is authorized as a first responseIN PUBLIC! Another line in the brochure.
Two people were murdered in North Dakota last year. They were stabbed.
No one was shot.
According to this graph, a little more than fifty percent of North Dakotans own a gun. Half the states populationnobody shot.
For the record, Washington, D.C. has some of the strictest gun laws in the country and the fewest legal gun owners. Guess where they stand in number of homicides with a firearm. They are #1. |

One of the most contentious aspects of Ohio's CHL law when it was enacted was the question of privacy. Originally, any journalist could go to the Sheriff's office and request a listing of the name, county, and date of birth of every person who had been issued a CHL.
This limited access was intended as a compromise to allow for some privacy while still giving in to the stated desire of the mainstream media to serve a watchdog function to determine if licenses were being issued to criminals. Instead, many newspapers proceeded to defy the will of the legislature by printing that information in their print editions as well as online. |

The legacy of the Cleveland Elementary School shootings is evident 20 years later. Change is a big part of that legacy.
The shootings had a major effect on the gun-control debate... They brought into focus the issue of school safety like no other campus shooting had to that point. The attack stands as a stark warning of the vitally important need to identify and help mentally disturbed people before they commit an atrocity. And it was one of the events that raised awareness of the stress reactions people often suffer years after experiencing a tragedy.

The first time the Rev. Isaac Miller was arrested at a civil-rights protest, he was a Morehouse College student at the 1960 Atlanta sit-ins. The second time was Wednesday, after the rector of Philadelphia's Church of the Advocate entered, then refused to leave, Colosimo's Gun Center...
My knees aren't what they used to be," Miller, 65, mentioned as he began to stand (rather than sit) in civil disobedience.
Activists want Colosimo's to join the fight against straw purchases - the wink-and-nod practice of legally buying guns in bulk, then illegally reselling them to bad guys.
Owner James Colosimo, 77, insists he has done nothing wrong. "I've been here 57 years," he told me. "My reputation speaks for itself." |

Concern over possible new gun-control measures imposed by Barack Obama's incoming administration is driving up firearm sales in Virginia and locally.
Gun sales are "absolutely" going up in Virginia, said David Adams, president of the Virginia Shooting Sports Association...
Gun shows in Virginia after the election were packed, and stores selling firearms have mostly reported higher sales. Adams noted that gun sales typically go up at this time of year because of hunting season, but it's more than usual this year.
Firearms perceived to be at highest risk for being banned by the Obama administration are selling best, Adams said. These include military-style tactical rifles and semiautomatic pistols that can hold more than 10 rounds. |

"Disappointing, considering when they last ran for office, Hatch received an A+ grade from NRA and Martinez was given an A. But aside from a letter criticizing Holder for, among other things, not being a strong enough proponent of federal 'Project Exile' gun control provisions, the Association has declined to mobilize its membership to oppose Holder's confirmation, and has even gone one further step, according to RedState.com:
"'The NRA does not want to hurt their scores. Therefore theyll make noises in opposition to Holder, but they will not score a vote for Holder to impact legislators rankings.'" |
