He voted against allowing people to claim self-defense if they used a gun in their home. The measure would have affected only residents of towns where local handgun bans were in effect.
But he also voted in favor of allowing retired police officers to carry concealed weapons. Gibbs said that would be his only exception to a prohibition against the right to carry a concealed weapon. |

That word is GUNS — specifically handguns. And they are everywhere.
Killing has become casual and effortless. Children shoot one another now because of some real or imagined slight. Or over a piece of clothing. Or in reply to a disrespectful glance. Or in the course of some otherwise trivial argument. Or over nothing at all. |

Well, maybe the commingling of gay rights and gun rights is unexpected, but that's the aim of the Pink Pistols. As the national organization's Web site (pinkpistols.org) explains:
"Socially, the [gay] and shooting communities are both quite similar. Both are often insular and can be closeted, and both have a stereotypical preconceptions about what the other is like." |

Even if David's Sporting Goods and Self Defense on Second Street in Jersey City did not exist, the concept might spring from any action film fan's imagination.
It's a one-stop shop where you can get your .44 Magnum and nunchucks while your kids check out baseball cards or shoot a Nerf basketball at a hoop next a life-sized cut-out of Arnold Schwarzenegger.
And it's all within a warm, friendly atmosphere where customers can enjoy a cup of coffee or Gatorade while watching reruns of old TV shows such as "Baretta" and "Kojak" and looking at the photos of Clint Eastwood and Bruce Lee. |

Missouri's local governments would no longer be allowed to ban the open carrying of firearms or the discharge of those weapons within their boundaries under a bill introduced by Sen. Jason Crowell.
If approved, the measure would make a Cape Girardeau city ordinance against openly carrying guns unenforceable along with another provision, which is also in Jackson's city ordinances, against the discharge of firearms within city limits. |

Mike Thomas stood in the middle of the New York State Arms Collectors Association show at Empire State Plaza Saturday, looking every bit a hunter. He wore a red-flannel hunting jacket with matching hat, and positioned himself like an outdoorsman waiting for wild game to pass by. Thomas, of Kingston, was in the mood to make a trade on this day though: his 1954 Marlin 22-gauge rifle for a Fox-Sterlingworth double-barreled shotgun. |

Inside a four-bedroom home nestled within an Oak Brook woods forest preserve, a gun-rights advocate is packing his bags, including his notorious fanny pack. For nine years, John Birch, president of Concealed Carry Inc., has fought to loosen restrictions on concealed firearms. He made headlines in 2001 when he encouraged people to bring handguns in fanny packs to the Taste of Chicago, based on a novel--and widely disputed--interpretation that the action would qualify as legal transportation "enclosed in a case." |

"...America, we hear, is looked up to as the last resource of liberty and the common rights of mankind. Brave and generous, we fight for mankind, and they say, "to it, brave boys," but afford us not one necessary of war--not a musket or bayonet, not a grain of powder. England has cut off our usual supply. Holland and France follow the noble example. They say the Americans are cowards, poltroons, dare not fight; yet these doughty heroes take care to deprive us of the means of defence. If we are so fearful, why disarm us? ..."

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- An elderly man who wrote in a letter to the editor about Saddam Hussein's execution that "they hanged the wrong man" got a visit from Secret Service agents concerned he was threatening President George W. Bush.
The letter by Dan Tilli, 81, was published in Monday's edition of The Express-Times of Easton, Pa. It ended with the line, "I still believe they hanged the wrong man."
Tilli said the statement was not a threat. "I didn't say who -- I could've meant (Osama) bin Laden," he said Friday. Submitters Note: It's obvious to me that the government has too much taxpayer money. |
