"States with the greatest number of guns in the home also have the highest rates of homicide, a new study finds."
"The study, in the February issue of Social Science and Medicine, looked at gun ownership in all 50 states and then compared the results with the number of people killed over a three-year period."
"The research, the authors said, 'suggests that household firearms are a direct and an indirect source of firearms used to kill Americans both in their homes and on the streets.'"
"The researchers, led by Matthew Miller of the Harvard School of Public Health, drew on data gathered by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2001, the agency surveyed more than 200,000 people and asked them, among other questions, whether they had a gun in or near the home." ... |

"Using the EXACT same data sources that Miller et al did, here is, in table form, showing -- state by state -- for 2004, the exact homicides by firearm. ... This chart ONLY shows what police in those states have termed homicides. This data comes from the CDC's WISQARS site, the same one the authors of the study claim that they used."
"In the last column, I list the percentage of homes that have firearms and this column takes it's data from -- again -- the BRFSS (Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System) Report as listed in Miller's study." ... |

Law-enforcement agencies across the country have been warned about a deadly new weapon - a knife that fires bullets.
The Drug Enforcement Agency has sent out a bulletin alerting cops and federal agents about the device, a working knife with a trigger mechanism near its handle that can be easily concealed. It can fire five rounds.
The alert came after a video demonstrating the gun-knife surfaced on the Web site YouTube.
"We have not seen it on the streets yet, but there are guns out there being fashioned into pens, cellphones, Blackberrys. Soon, I'm sure, we'll see iPods being compromised," said DEA spokesman Douglas Collier. |

Authorities have identified the intruder killed by a homeowner in Hall County.
Sheriff's Major Jeff Strickland says the man killed early Sunday was 37-year-old Robby Bailey of Winder.
He says the homeowners were home when they were confronted by a man wearing a ski mask and armed with a handgun just outside the door of the home. Strickland says one of the homeowners shot and killed Bailey after the suspect opened fire on them.
Authorities say the homeowner acted in self-defense and NO charges will be filed.
Strickland says Bailey's red 1996 Jeep Cherokee was located in a field about a half mile from the house. |

"Re: the Dec. 27 commentary, 'Too many weapons: Control guns to stop the tide of death', by John D. Kelly IV:"
"Dr. Kelly obviously is committed to the medical profession. However, his negative position on firearms ownership is an emotional response that avoids the true factors in violent acts."
"He blames availability of guns and concealed-carry permits as the cause of 380 homicides in Philadelphia in 2005, noting that 208 of these deaths were over disputes."
"Dr. Kelly seems to purport that holding individuals accountable for their actions is unrealistic, and, therefore, that eliminating the rights in the Second Amendment is the only plausible solution to violent crime." ... |

"In November, one of the clear messages voters sent Congress was to knock off the partisan gamesmanship and start finding common ground on real solutions. ... By putting aside ideology and focusing on facts, consensus becomes possible -- even on an issue as divisive as guns."
"We understand that there are good people on both sides of the gun debate -- and we respect each side. But for too long, this ideological gap has obscured a basic truth: The vast majority of guns used in crimes are purchased and possessed illegally. Criminals who cannot buy guns legally nevertheless have easy access to them on the black market ... Surely, members of both political parties can agree this is wrong ..." ... |

"Mayors from some of the nation's largest cities gathered here today to urge Congress to crack down on the sale of illegal firearms. But their expanding coalition, led by Mayors Michael R. Bloomberg of New York and Thomas M. Menino of Boston, has begun to encounter resistance among some advocates for gun owners." ...
"But there were signs of emerging opposition to the mayors' effort. The New York Sun reported last week that Jared Fuhriman, the mayor of Idaho Falls, Idaho, was the first and so far only mayor to drop out of the coalition, saying he thought the coalition was going too far. The coalition now includes mayors from 44 states and the District of Columbia. (Arizona, Idaho, Kansas, New Hampshire, West Virginia and Wyoming are not represented.)" |

"Mere hours after the Assault Weapons Ban legislation was introduced, concerned sportsmen were calling and emailing their state Senators in protest. Approximately half of the homes in Maryland have at least one firearm, and almost every gun owner in the state would be affected by the retroactive legislation. Maryland already has some of the most restrictive gun laws in the nation, and the highest favorable rating from the Brady organization.
