It shouldn't come as much of a surprise that Alaskans support current gun laws in the United States, which gun-control advocates say are much too lax. According to a public opinion poll conducted among 750 respondents last month for Alaska Dispatch News by Ivan Moore's Alaska Survey Research, a large majority statewide 60.6 percent opposed stricter U.S. gun laws, compared to 33.7 percent who wanted more restrictions.
In no region of Alaska were respondents in favor of tougher gun laws, though Democrats and progressives signaled support. Among age groups, the most adamantly opposed to stricter laws were 18- to 34-year-olds, where 73.5 percent opposed changes. |

Its been an interesting decade or so. Gasoline engines are out, electric cars are in. Big bores are out, mouse guns are in. Its now OK to venture forth carrying a handgun in something less than .40 caliber. You dont lose all your friends simply because you didnt physically stop them from leaving the house carrying an easily concealed, small-caliber pistol. |

One of the more peculiar hobbies popular among the Silicon Valley elite is an obsession with preparing to survive for end times; its adherents are commonly called preppers. Its the topic of an essay in the New Yorker this week, Survival of the Richest by Evan Osnos, which delves into why tech billionaires are particularly attracted to the idea. According to Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn, the prepper movement among tech-made billionaires is largely inspired by fear that artificial intelligence will one day displace so many jobs that there will be a revolt against those behind the technology.

Some academics and newspaper editors think privately owned firearms dont belong on campus. In fact, the criminals who bring their guns on campus dont care what academics and editors think. What really matters to us is what the criminals actually do, and so far, the thugs are laughing at our no guns signs.
Privately owned firearms work as tools of self-defense, and gun owners use them responsibly. I bet the professors and editors dont believe me. Guns belong on campus and here is why. |

Steve Huffman, the thirty-three-year-old co-founder and C.E.O. of Reddit, which is valued at six hundred million dollars, was nearsighted until November, 2015, when he arranged to have laser eye surgery. He underwent the procedure not for the sake of convenience or appearance but, rather, for a reason he doesnt usually talk much about: he hopes that it will improve his odds of surviving a disaster, whether natural or man-made. ... Survivalism, the practice of preparing for a crackup of civilization, tends to evoke a certain picture: the woodsman in the tinfoil hat, the hysteric with the hoard of beans, the religious doomsayer. But in recent years survivalism has expanded to more affluent quarters ... |

College, we like to think, is a time of intellectual inquiry. But it is also, as anyone who has spent any time on a campus knows, a time of boundary-testing, experimentation and alcohol-fueled parties. Not exactly the kind of place where it makes sense to let folks wander around carrying hidden weapons.

Political science professor Robert Spitzer voiced opposition to the suppressor deregulation by claiming that the sound of gunfire is a gun safety feature. Writing in the Washington Post, Spitzer, the chair of the Political Science Department at State University of New York at Cortland, opened his column by quoting George W. Bushs former press secretary, Ari Fleischer, who was in the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on January 6 when Esteban Santiago allegedly opened fire. Fleischer recalled hearing the shots, saying, We all realized it was gunfire, and it was coming from the level below us at the escalator.

Of all the freedoms that puzzle non-Americans most, the Second Amendment must surely top the list. While most of the constitutional rights, such as freedom of religion and speech, enjoy similar recognition and respect in Europe, the right to bear arms seems far removed from our definition of freedom. |
