"Let's give credit where credit is due. The NRA helped in a big way to put Kmart out of its misery. When Rosie 'guns are OK for my bodyguards but no one else' O'Donnell petitioned Kmart to drop ammo from its stores, the NRA pounded them and let all of its membership know it. By dropping the ammo, Kmart shot themselves in the foot."

"There they go again. The well-heeled lobbyists at "Americans for Gun Safety" apparently wouldnt recognize the truth even if they stumbled over it. Witness the Roll Call ad today they tossed together claiming that "As Governor of Pennsylvania, Tom Ridge signed legislation requiring background checks for handgun and assault weapons sales at gun shows..." --NRA-ILA

"President Clinton wanted NICS to fail to fuel political support for waiting periods. NICS success would have granted victory to Clinton's enemy, the NRA.

Ironically, some of the blame lands at the feet of AGS. Senior AGS staffers were in key positions within the Clinton administration and Congress but did nothing to ensure the successful development of NICS." --JAMES JAY BAKER, NRA's chief lobbyist

Under current law, a person convicted of a federal felony loses their Second Amendment right to own and carry a firearm. Many people, including many federally convicted felons, believe that is an absolute, irrevocable part of their sentence. But a provision of the United States code says otherwise.

When it comes to important Olympic news coverage, you depend on me to go where normal reporters do not. So I have gone and armed myself with a concealed weapon.

Wait. This is an important Olympic issue. Many people do not know how to acquire and properly conceal weapons around ticket scalpers.

You can relax. For safety reasons, I will arm myself only with a concealed weapon permit. I received permission to do this from no less a public safety official than my wife.

The fact that their histories did not prevent either man from buying a gun in Pennsylvania has ignited a "new a tricky and controversial debate" on what should be put first: the desire to protect the privacy of an individual, or the effort to ensure the safety of a community.

"News Item: Mayor Daley to deliver "State of the City" address on Feb. 26.

At the city's current rate, that would be 59 murders from now, for those keeping track. Daley will probably want to tell us more about his Millennium Park, which should be completed 885 murders from now.

We'll have to wait another 109 murders for his Soldier Field renovation, though." --ZAY N. SMITH

The tranquility of country life ended for Leroy Clayton when a shooting range opened in 1998 on the farm next to his in eastern Georgia. "Sounds like Afghanistan," Mr. Clayton says.

But when the 66-year-old barber tried taking the range to court-arguing that the noise rendered his farm unliveable he made a startling discovery: The Georgia Legislature had recently passed a law shielding shooting ranges from noise related litigation.

KABA NOTE: The NRA attempted to pass a similar but *anti*-gun bill in South Carolina. Thank goodness GrassRoots was on the ball and made sure it didn't pass. Check out http://www.SCFirearms.org for more information: Search for "Range Protection".

2ND LETTER DOWN PAGE

"The Rocky Mountain News is calling for statewide uniform standards for issuing concealed weapon permits ('Gun permit muddle,' Jan. 13). Such a uniform, "shall-issue" system would require law enforcement to issue permits to virtually everyone who wants one. A sheriff would enjoy less discretion in issuing a permit than a bartender does in serving drinks..." --Ted Pascoe, Executive director, Physicians for "Social Responsibility", Colorado Chapter, Denver

St. Clair County authorities knew confiscated guns were missing from a storage room; they just didn't know how many. But after a sting that netted one arrest and five pistols, investigators now say 151 weapons were taken from a storage room in the St. Clair County building in a series of thefts discovered two weeks ago.

Seven pistols have been recovered. The rest are unaccounted for, said Sgt. Dave Thornton.

"Nobody wants felons and other people forbidden from gun ownership to buy firearms with ease. Yet, almost 10,000 were able to do so in a 30-month period because most state felony records are not automated and the dangerous backgrounds of the buyers couldn't be established quickly." --Opinion of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Staff

Republican Delegate Lee Ware's bill would repeal a 1995 law that prohibits people with a concealed weapons permit from carrying a firearm in establishments that serve alcohol.
