Fort Benning is welcoming some of its youngest competitors to show off their shooting techniques in their annual junior rifle match.
Junior rifle athletes from across the country will compete for national titles at Fort Benning over the next three days.
The event is organized by the U.S Army's Marksmanship Unit to test the skills of young rifle athletes.
Juniors will fire in on three different rifle shooting techniques for some intense competition.
They say the goal is to promote firearm safety to connecting juniors with experts in the Army and its soldiers. The competitors will also have the opportunity to learn techniques from Olympians, world and national champions.

Michigan House Speaker Lee Chatfield last week paid a $1,960 fine to the federal Transportation Security Administration after inadvertently carrying a loaded, unregistered handgun into an airport last summer, he said Thursday.
The Levering Republican was assessed a nearly $4,000 fine for the incident at the Pellston Regional Airport but was able to get cut in half under TSA policy by paying within 30 days, he told reporters after a taping of Off The Record on WKAR.
That was an expensive mistake, Chatfield said, noting he had also previously paid a $250 civil infraction. |

HR8 requires that loans, gifts, and sales of firearms be processed by a gun store. The same fees, paperwork, and permanent record-keeping apply as to buying a new gun from the store. If you loan a gun to a friend without going to the gun store, the penalty is the same as for knowingly selling a gun to a convicted violent felon. Likewise, when the friend returns the gun, another trip to the gun store is necessary, upon pain of felony.
A clever trick in HR8 effectively bans handguns for persons 18-20 years old. |

Tuesday, however, we got a big hint about another area of the law where Justice Kavanaugh might prove to make a big difference the Second Amendment. When he was on the Court, Justice Kennedy supported gun rights, voting with the Courts conservatives in two landmark cases. In 2008, the Supreme Court held that the Second Amendment protects an individuals right to own a handgun, and in 2010, the Court reaffirmed that precedent and applied it nationwide. Justice Kennedy sided with gun owners in both of these cases. |

However, recently, Hawaii state officials filed a petition with the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals to rehear the case before an 11-judge en banc panel. Based in San Francisco, the 9th Circuit federal appeals court has a long history of ruling against Second Amendment protection cases, said Dillon.
Dillon said Hawaiian state officials filed their rehearing petition in September, but a decision whether the case will be reheard has not been announced, he said. |

Rowe then proceed to relay several experiences in which he learned valuable lessons from individuals who embraced the Second Amendment as a right and a personal responsibility. |

What Stevens said about the Second Amendment and his own anti-gun activism on the court is a chilling reminder of how vulnerable our rights can be in the hands of jurists who consider themselves empowered not only to decide what the law is, but what it should be.
It also underscores the vital work that President Donald Trump is undertaking to appoint judges to the federal judiciary whose allegiance is to the Constitutions original meaning and the dictates of the law, not their own policy preferences. |

Your editorial, "Guns and the new Supreme Court" (Jan. 24), clearly showed your writers have no real understanding of the Second Amendment. Describing the court as ready to expand gun rights" is a completely ridiculous statement. The Second Amendment gives people in the United States the right to own guns with a few exceptions such as fully automatic weapons that are strongly controlled. What is at issue in the New York case you discuss is not to expand gun rights which already are contained in the U.S. Constitution, but the reduction of laws that have diluted this natural right (the basic right to possess whatever is legally and non-forcefully acquired). |

This Case of the Week involves an Indianapolis man who successfully ambushed three home burglars, killing one and driving off the others, who were ultimately arrested. (Click here for a link to the news report by the IndyStar.)
Local prosecutors have announced that they do not intend to bring charges against the defender. Based on the reported facts this appears to be a perfectly sound call by prosecutors. So, a big win for the good guy, right?
The answer, in an immediate sense, is yes, this was a big win for the good guy. But was it a win worth achieving? Especially given the risks involved, both physical and legal? And the stakes being protected? Those are the issues Id like to explore in this Case of the Week. |

A group of firearm dealers and Second Amendment advocates is suing a California county fair board, alleging that its decision last year to ban gun shows restricts the Constitutional rights of gun owners.
The lawsuit against the Del Mar Fairgrounds of San Diego County was filed Monday in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California.
The primary plaintiff is B & L Productions, which claims to be the largest vendor of gun show events in California. It has hosted gun shows at Del Mar Fairgrounds for more than 30 years. |

Now, three months after the newest justice joined the court, we have gleaned the first tangible evidence of his influence: On Tuesday, the Supreme Court decided to hear its first major gun rights case in nearly a decadea decision that many attribute to the added vote of the court's newest member. And if Kavanaugh's record is any indication, it will not go well for gun-control advocates. |

Before closing down next weeks session on Tuesday, state lawmakers are expected to pass a number of gun control measures over lobbying by Second Amendment groups like the National Rifle Association.
On the list is a ban on rapid-fire bump stocks, devices that can be placed on semi-automatic weapons to increase firing speed. Such bump stocks were used in the 2017 Las Vegas shooting massacre. The Trump administration late last year imposed a federal ban on the devices.
New Yorks Safe Act gun control law bans the attaching of bump stocks to weapons. But it does not ban the sale or possession of the devices, which the new bill will do. |

It was the story at the Roundhouse on Thursday: gun control.
Democrats have proposed a slate of bills; the focus Thursday was on background checks for private gun sales. The line to weigh in on it was practically out the door.
There was a lot of emotion Thursday. People on both sides of the fight flooded the Roundhouse hallways preparing to vent their concerns.
"I oppose this bill. The reason for opposition is because it doesn't accomplish its goal. The goal is to reduce crime and evidence has proven this bill will not accomplish that," one public commenter said. |

Lawmakers at the state legislature are debating a "red flag" law that would impact whether or not loved ones have a say in deciding if an individual can keep their firearm.
It is meant to be applied in situations when an individual is determined to be a danger to themselves or others.
Such a law could work on two pathways, either a family member could obtain a court order, or law enforcement could take the initiative on its own. |
