"The New York Times reports yesterday that a new study from Miller, Hemenway, and Azrael claims: 'States with the greatest number of guns in the home also have the highest rates of homicide ...' Well, I have just spent a short time looking at the study, but there are some of things that are pretty obvious: 1) They excluded the District of Columbia without any explanation, 2) they use other crime rates to explain the homicide rate (by the way, they dont use anything like an arrest or conviction rate, nothing to do with law enforcement), 3) they use purely cross-sectional data that never allows one to properly control for what may cause differences in crime rates, and 4) data from different years is used without any explanation ..." ... |

"The New Gun Week is not kind to Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney's attempts to win over gunmakers by attending the annual SHOT (Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade) Show, the annual trade show for America's gun industry. As one pro-gun activist cited in the article put it, 'Romney was a liberal Republican for years. Now that he wants to be President he's trying to shine up his conservative credentials. Gay marriage? Yes back then. No now. Guns? No then. Yes now. Hypocrite? Maybe then. Certainly now.' Having myself been an attendee at far too many SHOT Shows, I would have been surprised if the response had been anything otherwise." ... |

Muskogee County prosecutors are declining to file charges against an 81-year-old Haskell man who shot and killed another man Saturday night.
District Attorney Larry Moore says Curtis Wright acted in self-defense when he shot 49-year-old Arthur Fisher Junior in the chest with a 12-gauge shotgun. Investigators say Fisher had threatened Wright with a knife.
The shooting death was the second homicide reported in Muskogee County this year, both of which occurred in Haskell.
The first occurred January 4th when Bobby Foster was shot to death during what investigators described as a drug deal gone bad. |

"Of Baltimore's 21 homicides so far this year, 17 are gun-related. Last year there were 85 non-fatal juvenile shootings and a majority of the city's 275 homicide victims died from bullet wounds."
"'It's just so important that we keep guns out of the hands of those people that no rational person would want to let have a weapon,' said New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg who also attended the summit." ... -------

City of Manhattan officials are going to ban concealed weapons in some areas. This month Kansas began issuing Concealed Carry licenses. State law prohibits concealed weapons in some areas including state buildings, but Manhattan City Commissioners are taking those restrictions further.
"Our philosophy was to identify certain areas as property that we own where there might be meetings or larger gatherings of people and those are the areas we want to make sure that someone's not bringing a concealed weapon," Manhattan Deputy City Manager Diane Stoddard said.
Those areas include public parks, swimming pools and some organized sports areas. The city will have to display signs to show that weapons are not allowed. |

"Regarding 'Giving cowboys a shot,' (Sunday, Jan. 14), I get a bang out of Old West shootists firing their shotguns."
"The versatile shotgun played a vital role on the 19th-century Western frontier. If a person were limited to owning but one firearm during this era, a double-barrel shotgun (both percussion muzzle loaders and later breech loaders) was a sensible choice. Beside the repeating rifle and six-shooter, it was the shotgun which actually tamed the frontier out west."
