President Barack Obama. Its official now. It thrills some, terrifies others and has others taking a wait-and-see attitude. Some of those who are terrified are basing their fears in rumors that the new president wants to strip everyone of their Second Amendment right to bear arms.

The National Rifle Association spent millions of dollars to convince Americans that Obama will do just that Some of their claims:

...

5) Obama wants to pass a federal law eliminating concealed carry rights. This is one the organization [factcheck.org] got right. Obama does want to prevent anyone except police officers from carrying concealed weapons.

This Saturday, a conceal carry class for women will be held in Diamond.

As more and more women are becoming aware of the importance of being trained in self-defense, many are considering becoming licensed to carry a concealed weapon.

The one-day class will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Diamond Memorial Hall, 201 E. Maple St. The cost is $80 per person and those interested in attending must bring a pistol of their choice, at least 50 rounds of ammunition and hearing protection. Diamond Chief of Police Keith Brumfield and Diamond Mayor Steve Carter will teach the class.

Nonetheless, there are those in the House of Representatives and the Senate, who continue to offer legislation infringing on the rights of the people. The latest being controls on ammunition being considered. The most common example of this type of legislation is now proliferating across the states. As the The New American magazine has reported in recent days, these are all very similar to the 2005/6 California legislature ammunition serialization bill, AB 352.

Saying Americans need a "fighting chance" to confront outlaws in a violent society, U.S. Rep Cliff Stearns has gone on the offensive to promote his bill to allow concealed-weapons permit-holders to cross state lines without fear of having their constitutional rights curtailed by another state's laws.

...

John M. Snyder, public affairs director of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, in a statement urging more members of Congress to sign on to the measure, noted that "gun grabbers slather at the potential for passing restrictive gun control legislation" with Democrats in control of both the White House and Congress.

A restraining order didn't keep a woman's ex-boyfriend from breaking into her home this morning, where she shot him.

Wounded and in handcuffs, 32-year-old Jeffery Seats was taken first to Wishard Hospital, then to jail.

"She's got a right to protect herself and her children and he forced his way in there, so she shot him," said IMPD Lt. Jeff Duhammel.

It's struck me in recent days that I have never given the handgun express sight system designed by my friend Ashley Emerson a serious workout. This gaping hole in my firearms expertise demanded to be filled, so I decided to pit conventional post/notch sights against the express sights--both for accuracy at distance and for speed in-close.

Ashley Emerson first approached the idea of this design as a way of adapting the sights commonly found on African express hunting rifles to handguns. As Ashley put it, "This is what serious hunters use when they're expecting to run into something dangerous that jumps out at them at close range and tries to kill them. That sounds an awful lot like self-defense, doesn't it?"

One sector of the American economy that is booming is the absolute orgy of guns and
ammunition sales. I am pretty certain President Obama will not say anything positive about this economic news.

I have read more than one report that shows how the surge of civilian firepower sales began back when it appeared that Obama was likely to be elected. The already-brisk guns and ammo market blew up another 25% once he was elected. Reason: freedom lovers do not trust liberal President Obama. His nomination for Attorney General, Mr. Eric Holder, proves that distrust is justified.

Both President Obama and Mr. Holder are avowed gun-control zealots--typical of the loony, anti-freedom wing of the Democratic Party.

I for one applaud Gov. David Paterson's pick of Kirsten Gillibrand to fill Hillary Clinton's Senate seat ["For some, her rise comes as no surprise," News, Jan. 25]. Her pro-gun background is a plus in my opinion. Being raised in a family of hunters teaches one respect for the animals harvested, and a respect for the proper use of firearms.

There are already too many laws on the books regulating firearms, and we need only enforce the ones already enacted to protect the public. I am for holding the accused responsible for their actions and not denying the free American people their Second Amendment rights.

A voice of reason in the Senate is welcome by the sportsman's community.

Just a short letter to all shooters, hunters, gun owners and people who believe in the Second Amendment.

House Resolution or HR45 introduced by Rep. Bobby Rush of Illinois will reinstate the Brady gun ban of 1994,and will force all gun owners to apply for a federal license, will create a federal database of all gun owners and all legal gun transactions, will end all gun shows and force any transfer of any firearm, even a gift or an estate to pay the transfer fee, and notify all law enforcement agencies of it.

Incoming U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., takes office today amid criticism from gun control supporters, who say they are troubled by the National Rifle Association's endorsement and a stance favoring what she has called "hunters' rights."

During two years in the House, Gillibrand has built only a short record on gun issues, but each of the votes placed her squarely on the side of gun rights. Those votes dovetail with her campaign rhetoric, including proclamations last year that she is "a strong supporter of the Second Amendment" and "will continue to oppose legislation that will restrict the rights of responsible gun owners."

IL: Taking up arms: Proposed bill would allow Illinoisans to carry concealed handguns

Illinois law enforcement officials are divided over a new attempt to permit the state's residents to carry concealed handguns.

Rep. John Bradley, D-Marion, has proposed a "Family and Personal Protection Act" that would set statewide standards for issuing concealed-carry permits and would exempt permit holders from various unlawful use of weapons laws. The bill, HB0245, was referred to the rules committee after first reading last week... This year, though, the idea could get a boost from the Illinois Sheriff's Association...He said statistics show crime goes down in states with concealed-carry laws.

Not everyone in law enforcement feels that way, however...

CA: More Bad Guys Using Fake Guns

It's been a law enforcement problem for some time, but now, an even more alarming number of criminals have resorted to using replica toy guns to commit real crimes.

The replica "fake" guns look alarmingly similar to their real counterparts. In most cases, an orange tip on the gun's barrel is a fake weapon's only distinguishing characteristic from the real thing. Federal law requires all replica guns include a neon-orange tip.

Sacramento Police Officer Konrad Von Schoech said replica guns are easy to buy -- and just as easy to alter.

"It's very easy to walk into a sporting goods store and buy one of these, then later take it home and color the orange tip and use it in a crime," Von Schoech said.

From out of nowhere she appeared, seemingly to soothe the troubled souls of gun rights advocates wary of yet another Democratic Senator from New York.

She is a pretty blond, a supposed 'rising start' among the blue-dog Democrats, and she likes guns.

Traditional liberal Democrats in the state immediately blasted Governor Patterson for appointing Kirsten Gillibrand to replace Hillary Clinton in the U.S. Senate...that is, everyone except the rabid gun-grabber Senator Charles 'Little Chucky' Schumer.

MO: The new push to ban so-called 'assault weapons

One type of proposed federal law that incessantly comes up for discussion is a new federal ban on so-called "assault weapons." The last such ban, of course, expired in 2004, after which, suddenly . . . such firearms continued to be used in only a tiny percentage of violent crimes. That little detail hasn't deterred the gun prohibitionists, though, who constantly comb the news waiting for the next killing in which such firearms are used, in order to have something to point to in order to make their case.

This time, it's Miami that has provided fodder for the citizen disarmament advocates, with a shooting involving an "AK-47" . . .

There has been some discussion of late on various rifleman websites concerning the dearth of mil-surp bandoleers, specifically those for 5-round 7.62 NATO stripper clips. I have a few of the Aussie bandoleers for this application and they are indeed nice. But I like my SKSs and AKs, too, and I wanted something to hold 10-round 7.62x39 stripper clips. Having solved this for myself a few years back, I thought I'd discuss my DIY solution with you folks -- our four dedicated readers.

Anyone who has read much of my Praxis stuff knows that I am a big believer in scavenging. I get this compulsion from my early training at the knee of my mother's father, Lewis Nace, who, after being injured in an industrial accident at Clark Equipment, supplemented his disability by trash hauling. He would put an ad in the newspaper and offer to clean out basements and attics and carry off unwanted items to the dump. Boy, did he make out like a bandit. Hey, he even carried off firearms and ammunition (unfortunately this was many years before I was allowed access to firearms). . . My earliest memories of him include wheeling and dealing at the Shipshewana Auction and Flea Market, in the heart of Amish country.

Silent Weapons

No, not the kind of silent weapon used by CIA spooks or KGB assassins to dispose of targets during the cold war or the type screwed onto the barrel of a long range sniper rifle, with cross hairs zeroed on the heart of a charismatic evil leader or the ex-wife that continues to suck at the wallet year after year forcing you to live in deprivation while she and your replacement live in the lap of luxury at your expense.

No, the silent weapons I am talking about are less sinister in nature. The value of silence under certain survival conditions could literally mean the difference between life and death for the survivor.

I've been appalled at Sheriff Sandra Hutchens' hostility to the Second Amendment, as she has tried to revoke the concealed-carry permits of law-abiding Orange County gun owners...

Based on a rumor that gun-rights activists would show up to protest her policies by carrying unloaded guns in holsters, the sheriff sent more than 20 deputies to the public board meeting, where they searched, watched, followed and questioned those residents who showed up to speak out against the sheriff's new-and-not-so-improved plan to move up the expiration date of gun permits. The deputies targeted only those people who showed up wearing pro-gun-rights buttons or who appeared to be part of that group.

Every election year gun sales are up," said Brian Thompson, general manager of Woodlands World in Uniontown, adding that 2008 was no exception.

Thompson said many people are concerned that a law passed by former President Bill Clinton banning high-capacity handguns and lifted by President George W. Bush may be enacted again.

Also, Thompson said people are wary that a tax on ammunition may be put into place, as is law in 11 states.

Thompson said in addition to semi-automatic guns, the store has been selling a lot of sporting guns.

Janice Lahew of the Greene County sheriff's office said there definitely has been an increase in gun permits over the past few months

In the spring of 2000 I took to the road or more precisely the tracks. I was having some personal problems at the time and just wanted to get away from it all. Somehow I had to get the demon of internal struggle off my back. So I started walking, I walked from TN to FL and back again.

It was an interesting experience to say the least. I had a lot of time to think and work though my problems; it seemed like every time my feet hit the ground life's emotional distress faded a little farther into the dim background of my life. Some people turn to drugs or booze to cope with life's problems; I started walking.

Even if you are fortunate enough to have a retreat out in the country getting to your safe haven maybe impossible during upheaval. Roads blocked by wrecked and fuelless vehicles will stop most bugouters in their tracks. Maybe you were born lucky and can make it out safely before the balloon bursts, then what?

People in rural areas, will start shooting if threatened by mobs of refugees fleeing the city. Dont expect to be welcomed with arms outstretched. Most country folks dont trust outsiders; you will likely be greeted with a load of buckshot and not the cup of fresh coffee and meaningful conversation you had hoped for.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Without freedom there will be no firearms among the people; without firearms among the people there will not long be freedom. Certainly there are examples of countries where the people remain relatively free after the people have been disarmed, but there are no examples of a totalitarian state being created or existing where the people have personal arms. Neal Knox
