"So how does frequent border incursions by heavily armed foreign police and military qualify as success by our homeland defense and security agencies? Just this: If it was still as easy to penetrate the U.S. southwest border as it has been in recent years, drug- and human smugglers would not need such formidable armed support. ..."
"But this kind of success has obviously come with a price: increased danger for outgunned U.S. law enforcement personnel, as well as American (and Mexican) civilians living in border regions. As such, there is no longer any reason legally or morally why President Bush must refrain from deploying the U.S. military in support of federal and local law enforcement officials." |

"The rest of us are condemned at the least to listen to the eternal, sanctimonious debate over what to do about guns. Too often, in too many places, guns force us to alter how we construct our lives: where we will walk, where we will live, where we allow our children to go."
"An 8-year-old boy boasts that he can get his hands on a gun. Then, as The Washington Post reports today, prosecutors say the dad showed the child how to cock a weapon. The next morning, the boy shows up at day care with a .38-caliber Taurus revolver that belongs to his father, who turns out to be a felon who should never have had a gun in the first place."
