Authorities seized more than 60 firearms, including 50 pistols, five assault rifles and a submachine gun, from a Cleveland police officer charged with raping and pistol-whipping his live-in girlfriend, records say.
Tommie Griffin III, 51, remained behind bars Thursday after a Cuyahoga County judge continued a $250,000 bond at a video arraignment in Common Pleas Court.
A grand jury on Monday handed up charges including rape, felonious assault, kidnapping and domestic violence against the patrolman in Cleveland's First District.
He has remained jailed since North Royalton Police arrested him at gunpoint Jan. 14 at a Royalton Road tavern.

It also appeared they were being herded around by representatives of the League of Women Voters who walked around wearing League of Women Voters buttons on their lapels.
When the hearing was over, these t-shirt wearing women were taken outside the building to the plaza area where they had to take off their t-shirts and turn them in by placing them in a plastic Rubbermaid type container.
That begs a lot of questions. Where did these women come from? What made them agree to wear borrowed t-shirts and pretend to be activists? Who brought them there?
Is this a Florida League of Women Voters "Rent-a-Mom" program? Were these women paid to be there and wear those t-shirts? |

The switchblade knives wielded six decades ago by the fictional Jets and Sharks street gangs in the legendary Broadway musical West Side Story and in Hollywood films spooked lawmakers across the U.S. and helped usher in state bans.
But 54 years after Colorado enacted its prohibition of the folding knives with blades that pop out from their handles with the push of a button or a lever, a bipartisan group of state lawmakers is trying to repeal it.
They are citing arguments from knife rights activists and others who say switchblades have become everyday work tools that also can save lives because they can be opened with one hand instead of two. |

House Bill 136 and House Bill 137 were both passed out of the Wyoming House Judiciary Committee earlier this week. Both bills are currently waiting on the house floor and could be voted on as early as Monday.
It is important for NRA members and Second Amendment supporters to contact their state Representative and state Senator, and urge them to support these bills in their current form and oppose any amendments that would weaken them. |

Last year at this time the Jackson County Sheriffs Office had already issued 619 concealed carry weapons permits. This year theyve only issued 109. Thats more than an 80 percent drop.
The only full-time employee left in the division that issues the permits says wait times have decreased from 60 to just six days for the permits since the law went into effect January 1. The Jackson County Sheriff's Office has lost an estimated $50,000 in revenue compared to the same month last year, and had to downsize the permit division as a result.
One instructor said he's gone from offering three classes a month, to now struggling to fill one. |

The National Shooting Sports Foundation led the chorus of opposition to a last-minute traditional lead-component ammunition ban attempt by outgoing U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Director Dan Ashe.
Directors Order 219 was published on the last full day of President Obamas administration, without industry input and without scientific reasoning.
Larry Keane, NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel, has called on the next director to immediately roll back the order. The directive calls for the banning of traditional ammunition on federal lands upon the introduction of any information that suggests wildlife is harmed by its use. It also bans the use of lead shot for dove and upland bird hunting. |

If you make the decision to carry a pistol, youre obviously concerned about protecting the safety of yourself and those you love. Thats exactly why its so important to approach your concealed carry plan with the utmost diligence, caution and dedication to continuous learning.
Having a gun on your person guarantees nothing not even your protection. Knowing how, when and even if to use it safely is what might save your life. Without the right knowledge, skills and training, you might be in more danger than if you were unarmed.
If youre considering becoming one of the tens of millions of responsible armed Americans, consider this checklist as a guide to get you moving in the right direction. |

A jury found former teacher Cara Ryan not guilty of fatally shooting her ex-husband, a former St. Petersburg police officer, after two hours of deliberations Friday.
No one disputed that it was Ryan who pulled the trigger. But her lawyers argued that she shot Sgt. John "J.J." Rush in self-defense.
"We never doubted her innocence, from moment one," defense attorney Roger Futerman said. "It was a very quick verdict. I think they made their minds up early on that, that this woman should never have been arrested." |

Republicans in the Minnesota Legislature recently introduced a "Stand Your Ground" bill that would make it easier for gun owners to legally kill someone in self-defense.
Sen. Carrie Ruud, R-Breezy Point, introduced Senate File 292 in the Senate, but the original is a House of Representatives bill authored by Rep. Jim Nash, R-Waconia, House File 238. Rep. Josh Heintzeman, R-Nisswa, is one of the sponsors of the House version, introduced Jan. 12. |

In the House of Representative, State Representative Charlie Collins (R-84) has introduced House Bill 1249, a Campus Carry bill. NRA-ILA strongly supports this important legislation, which seeks to achieve a safer environment for public college and university residents, employees and visitors. HB 1249 would allow employees of public colleges and universities to carry firearms on campus, provided they have a valid Concealed Handgun Carry License (CHCL). Self-defense is a fundamental right of every person. |

An elected state attorney has considered the facts of the case and the law and has decided there is probable cause to charge and try someone. That defendant believes what he did was justified under the law. So explaining why before a judge before his trial does not seem like too much to ask in order to get those charges dismissed.
Ed.: Published on the same day by the same paper that reported a teacher was found not guilty due to self-defense, so innocent people are still being jailed and tried for crimes that never happened. That is why the burden of proof must be on the prosecutor, not the defendant. |

So, this happened: the 4th Circuit released an en banc decision involving a traffic stop in which a concealed carrier passenger was frisked by police, and much of the gun owning community lost its mind in a manner reminiscent of Rachel Maddow.
The gist of much of the media coverageparticularly the coverage from the rightwas the law abiding people who CCW have effectively been wholly stripped of their 4th Amendment rights. Is there no Constitutional safe space for these poor folks?
Given the histrionics, its worth taking a look at the actual facts of the case (indeed, its worth reading the entire decision, including the concurrence and dissent, so Ive embedded that below). |

With Second Amendment rights and public safety concerns at the forefront, North Dakota lawmakers heard testimony on a group of gun bills Thursday, Jan. 26.
Perhaps the most contentious piece of legislation heard Thursday was the so-called "constitutional carry" bill, introduced by Rep. Rick Becker, R-Bismarck. That bill would make it legal for people who are at least 21 years old to carry a concealed firearm without a permit in North Dakota, as long as the carrier is not otherwise prohibited to do so by law. |

The overbearing act, which was lovingly called the Kansas Personal and Family Protection Act by supporters, not only allows the carry of firearms on campus, it prevents the states colleges from having any say in the matter. Instead of allowing the decision on a case-by-case basis, the states colleges have no choice but to conform with an overbroad state law unless they are able to adequately secure every inch of the campus.
This session, however, two bills have been introduced that would exempt indefinitely college campuses from the law. They should be easy bills for lawmakers to support, but dont be surprised when thats not the case. |

Adam Burke, then 23, was charged with felony menacing and second-degree assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly pointing a gun at a 17-year-old boy during a confrontation, then firing it at the ground, earlier reports said. A bystander was struck by shrapnel, according to earlier reports. The two individuals were part of a group visiting a man who was run over by a car. Burke was with a separate group, court records said. He was released on a personal-recognizance bond shortly after his arrest.

The National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA) proudly supports introduction of the Veterans 2nd Amendment Protection Act (H.R. 629), a bill that would prevent the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) from restricting veterans Second Amendment rights without due process.
No veteran should have their fundamental right to self-defense arbitrarily revoked by a government bureaucrat, said Chris W. Cox, executive director, NRA-ILA. Receiving assistance to handle personal finances does not mean an individual is unable to safely own a firearm. Our brave men and women in the military should not be stripped of their constitutional rights without due process of law." |

The Elk County Sheriffs Department is bringing back a program to teach women about gun safety.
The first National Rifle Associations Women on Target instructional shooting clinic is scheduled Saturday at the Ridgway Rifle Club.
Sheriff Todd Caltagarone said about 250 women have signed up since he ran an ad in the newspaper last month.
The No. 1 desire of women when you ask them why they want this program is for self-defense, Caltagarone said. It seems prudent that our office and other law enforcement agencies do whatever we can to make sure people who choose to purchase and own a firearm know how to properly use it. |

However, instead of streamlining the law, and making it easier for citizens and law enforcement to understand, the Idaho legislature complicated the issue.
You see, we are treating non-Idaho residents who are guests here, like 2nd class citizens. Non-residents can already carry their shotguns and rifles, concealed, anywhere in the state without a permit. They can also carry their handguns, concealed, anywhere outside city limits with no permit.
Literally, the only thing that non-residents cant do is carry a handgun, concealed, inside city limits without a permit! |

The Second Amendment Foundation has scored another court victory, this time in Montana where a federal district court judge has entered a preliminary injunction against the state's citizenship requirement in order to obtain a concealed carry license.
U.S. District Court Judge Donald W. Molloy at the district court in Missoula has also stayed the case because the Legislature is currently considering legislation that would repeal the citizenship requirement. The case is Knutson v. Curry.
SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb noted that this is just the foundation's latest effort to secure protections for permanent legal resident aliens. |
