If more citizens were armed, criminals would think twice about attacking them, Detroit Police Chief James Craig said Thursday.

Urban police chiefs are typically in favor of gun control or reluctant to discuss the issue, but Craig on Thursday was candid about how hes changed his mind.

When we look at the good community members who have concealed weapons permits, the likelihood theyll shoot is based on a lack of confidence in this Police Department, Craig said at a press conference at police headquarters, adding that he thinks more Detroit citizens feel safer, thanks in part to a 7 percent drop in violent crime in 2013.

According to an affidavit, witnesses told police that they saw Shaffer load the rifle with his own rounds, and heard him say, "I'll shoot that (expletive) with his own rifle." The witnesses also told police they saw Hughes trying to climb the embankment, saw Shaffer pointing the gun at his back, then heard the gunshot.

Shaffer, 54, of the 1000 block of Mount Cydonia Road, is charged with a count of homicide and denied bail. Perhaps because this is hardly a standard stand-your-ground case.

For weeks and weeks weve seen rumors about two upcoming Glock pistols, the Glock 41 and the Glock 42. Following the Glock model naming convention, this would also imply that there is a Glock 40, but there have been no leaks or rumors involving that particular model number.

At first there was little to substantiate these rumors; we of course contacted Glock but they did not comment, which isnt a huge surprise when it comes to new products. But the leaks kept on leaking, and now theres a body of photos that amounts to a lot more than wild speculation.

The rest of the page follows a similar pattern of giving a basic description of the right guaranteed in the amendment.

The only exception is the Second Amendment. The wording, A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed, was changed to Right to bear arms: You can own guns for hunting and other legal activities.

The Second Amendment is the only one they had to explain what it meant, he said. It was the only one that had any (explanation.)

...

To me, theyre isolating that one amendment for a reason, he said. Well there are many reasons for that, but the Second Amendment has absolutely zero to do with hunting.

Sen. Greg Ball, R-Patterson, Putnam County, called a court ruling Tuesday that tossed a portion of New Yorks gun-control law a huge win for our constitutional freedoms.

A federal judge ruled Tuesday that New Yorks expanded ban on assault weapons is constitutional, however it cannot limit a magazine to seven bullets.

Ball has been an outspoken opponent of the SAFE Act, which was approved by the Legislature and signed into law by Gov. Andrew Cuomo in January.

The first thing you need to know about the Liberal Gun Club is that aside from general agreement on expansive Second Amendment rights, they have nothing in common with and dont wish to be associated with the NRA. As one member put it, We make ourselves a special place where we dont have to hear about the Kenyan Muslim socialist in the White House.

Representative Mike Kelly (R-Penn.) waited until President Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for 2014 to point out one potentially redeeming provision included among the many that infringe on civil liberties.

The day after the act was signed into law (forgetting for a moment that no act of Congress that violates the Constitution can be rightly considered a law), Kelly reminded Americans that his resolution calling for a ban on funding for the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty was now in effect.

New York has long been a place where the right to defend oneself with firearms is disparaged, but the affirmation of most aspects of the SAFE Act has disparaged gun ownership like no other act ["Court upholds most of gun act," News, Jan. 1].

After the tragic mass shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School, the New York State Legislature pushed through a gun control bill titled the Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act. This legislation is arguably one of the most restrictive laws in the country.

Rep. Paul Ray, R-Clinton and Sen. Curt Bramble, R-Provo, are both running separate bills to define the ability of law enforcement to charge a person openly carrying a weapon in public places with disorderly conduct. Both were co-sponsors of legislation that cleared the House in 2013, but died when compromise language raised opposition to the measure.

Gabriel Mobley had long claimed self-defense in fatally shooting two unarmed men one of whom he insisted appeared to be reaching for a weapon under his shirt during a 2008 scuffle outside a North Miami-Dade restaurant.

On Thursday, a Miami-Dade appeals court agreed.

In a decision under Floridas controversial Stand Your Ground self-defense law, the court ordered the dismissal of Mobleys murder charges, saying he acted reasonably because the slain men, though apparently unarmed, were the aggressors.

Many millions of law-abiding citizens carry concealed firearms for self-defense and tens of millions more have guns in their home for the same purpose.

Too often, however, these armed citizens have only a superficial understanding of the laws that govern the use of force in self-defenseand much of what they do know is simply wrong.

Were encouraged by Mondays news that the warning shot bill in the state Senate will get a hearing.

The measure Senate Bill 448, for those who want to track its progress would protect people who show or fire a gun in self-defense. State Sen. Greg Evers, the Baker Republican who represents Escambia and Santa Rosa counties, filed the Threatened Use of Force bill. A hearing has been scheduled for Wednesday before the Senate criminal justice committee, of which Evers is the chairman. A similar bill in the House has been filed by Rep. Neil Combee, a Polk City Republican.

The Marionville clerk who pulled his gun on a would-be robber in September said the act of self-defense was second nature to him.

What followed was quite a bit more unusual.

Jon Alexander was working the register at Beer 30 the evening of Sept. 1 when a man walked in and pulled a gun.

Alexander, a 30-year military man, reacted quickly using his left hand to push the robbers handgun back while pulling and swinging his 9 mm into the robbers mouth.

Dream Defenders executive director Phillip Agnew told host Melissa Harris-Perry on Saturday that the organization will continue working to repeal Stand Your Ground laws in Florida, but that they also plan to focus on systemic problems impacting youth in the state.

Stand Your Ground is just one branch [of] a really poisonous tree that shows how Florida cares about its young people, Agnew said on Saturdays Melissa Harris-Perry. And at the root of that tree is prejudice, profiling and prisons for profit.

Gottlieb said the complaint was amended to allow additional plaintiffs to join the action because people have been harmed in different ways by this Draconian new law.

The lawsuit notes that magazines holding ten or more rounds of ammunition are in common usage by law-abiding citizens for all kinds of purposes, including self-defense. It contends that there is not sufficient government interest to justify restricting gun owners from loading more than seven rounds in their otherwise lawful eight-, nine- or ten-round magazines.

As part of its ongoing Carry License Sunshine and Compliance Initiative, California-based gun rights group The Calguns Foundation (CGF) has published two new reports on handgun carry licenses in the state, which can be viewed or downloaded for free at www.calgunsfoundation.org/carry.

Based on data from the California Department of Justice and other government sources, the Foundation's reports show an increase of nearly 30,000 handgun carry licensees since it began efforts to make California "shall-issue" in May of 2009, when it and the Bellevue, Washington-based Second Amendment Foundation filed the first "right to carry" Second Amendment lawsuit in the nation since the Supreme Court's historic D.C. v. Heller decision in 2008.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
...but if circumstances should at any time oblige the government to form an army of any magnitude, that army can never be formidable to the liberties of the people, while there is a large body of citizens, little if at all inferior to them in discipline and use of arms, who stand ready to defend their rights... Alexander Hamilton speaking of standing armies in Federalist No. 29.
