"A major credit card company has issued a letter to a gun dealer canceling his payment processing services because of corporate concerns firearms were being sold to consumers in other states, in 'a non face-to-face environment.' Now the move has raised the ire of the National Shooting Sports Foundation."
"'Your anti-gun corporate policy is based on ignorance of the law applicable to the sale of firearms,' the NSSF wrote in response to the action taken by First Data Corp., which operates Citi Merchant Services." ... |

"While it is true that some abusers use firearms on their victims, it is not true in all cases. As a victim of domestic abuse, I can truthfully say I was only threatened three times with a firearm. A true abuser will use anything they can get their hands on to beat their victim and some of their tactics are more terrifying than a firearm."
"The right to bear arms is part of the original constitution of this country. I can assume that there were domestic abusers at that time also. Our founding fathers still decided that, no matter what, this should be a privilege and right of citizens of this country." ... |

"The right to bear and retain arms is guaranteed to all Americans in the Bill of Rights' second amendment, however, the application of this constitutionally designated right in favour of accused abusers represents a grave misunderstanding of the amendment's purpose. All of the Bill's Rights, second amendment included, are written with the expressed purpose of protecting citizens from any arbitrary deprivation of liberty by the state. In fact, the Constitution itself states that the Bill of Rights was designed to limit the power of the ruling government, thus the Rights were clearly NOT devised to be used as the basis to abuse and cause harm to fellow citizens." ... |

"Several families of the Virginia Tech massacre and Brady Campaign President Paul Helmke joined Senators Frank Lautenberg and Jack Reed on Capitol Hill today as the Senators announced the introduction of legislation that would strengthen the Brady background check system by closing the gun show loophole."
"'We make it too easy for dangerous people to get dangerous weapons. Closing the gun show loophole is a sensible step to take to strengthen the Brady criminal background check system,' said Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign. 'The bottom line should be: 'No background check. No gun. No excuses.'" ... |

I am an American citizen. I am a conservative Republican. I believe in the constitutional right to bear arms.
I believe that in an armed home invasion your only recourse is to have a weapon for protection. The police can only arrive after the fact, after the damage has been done.
Now I read in the paper that in Virginia a Republican-dominated committee voted along party lines to kill legislation to require unlicensed sellers at gun shows to run criminal background checks on buyers.
Voting this bill down continues to allow felons, domestic abusers and dangerously mentally ill individuals the right to obtain a gun. Particularly after the Virginia Tech disaster, I find this appalling.

"Driving around this area, you see plenty of bumper stickers declaring membership in the National Rifle Association and several cars adorned with slogans espousing the evils of guns. This automobile propaganda notwithstanding, there is seldom discussion about the underlying issue of the Second Amendment that is central to this debate. Soon, that could all change."
"The U.S. Supreme Court last considered a Second Amendment case 68 years ago, but that hiatus is over. Before the court is a hotly contested case that could turn the gun debate on its ear, influence the presidential election, and surely impact our area." ... |

"In State College Pensylvania, a BB gun club sought approval to hold a BB gun sports event at a middle school in the State College Area School District. They needed the school board to grant a one time exception to their existing 'Zero Tolerance' Gun Policy so that the children who wish to participate in the event could bring their BB gun with them (It would be difficult to hold the event without BB guns). The current policy states that weapons and replicas of weapons are prohibited at all School District buildings." ...

... "Until 1987 it was perfectly legal to carry a gun onto a commercial airplane (subject only to the airline's own rules). Disarming the pilots and passengers by federal decree made possible the 9/11 suicide hijackings. This policy remained in place until after 2003 when the Bush administration began to allow, on a very limited basis, federally trained pilots to carry weapons. ... official mandates [have] put Americans at great risk. Ron Paul has repeatedly championed the 2nd Amendment right to keep and bear arms, thus allowing the airlines to determine their own security measures. Should disaster strike and chaos ensue, Nebraskans could be forced to give up their guns, under current law.
That's what happened in New Orleans, when police seized guns after Hurricane Katrina walloped the city in 2005.
But a state lawmaker wants to change the rules so that cities and other political subdivisions in Nebraska couldn't do the same.
Under a bill LB 1076 from Sen. Kent Rogert of Tekamah, neither the state nor political subdivisions could enact special restrictions on guns during emergency or disasters. The law would apply to gun possession, storage and use, among other things.
The National Rifle Association filed a lawsuit against New Orleans city officials over the city's seizure of firearms after the hurricane. |

Two bills in the General Assembly could allow concealed handguns to be carried on college campuses.
One bill, proposed by Delegate Todd Gilbert, would prevent a Board of Visitors from prohibiting people with concealed handgun permits from carrying a gun on state property, which would include the campuses of state universities.
The other bill, proposed by Delegate Bob Marshall, would allow only college faculty members with concealed handgun permits to carry guns on campus.
Both bills are currently in a House of Delegates committee. |
