The Detroit Police Department has taken action in recent years through gun-buyback events to remove guns, legal or not, from the streets of Detroit.
But first-year Police Chief James Craig takes a slightly different approach. He says in the hands of legal, law-abiding citizens, firearms "could be a deterrence to violent crime."
Craig in previous interviews said he changed his mind on gun laws from a more restrictive stance after he became the chief in Portland, Me., a place he called "one of the safest places in America," and one with a high number of concealed weapon permits.

A man in his 20s was in fair condition Thursday after he was shot in a fight on the Palm Bay campus of Eastern Florida State College, authorities say.
The shooter, whom two men were beating, was treated and released from an area hospital, according to spokeswoman Yvonne Martinez of Palm Bay Police.
Police say Amado Contreras, 25, and his 24-year old brother, Landyer, attacked Landrick Hamilton, 24, with a pool cue in front of the college's main building. During the fight, Hamilton got a gun from his car at about 1:50 p.m. ET and fired one shot, hitting Amado Contreras. |

A voter decision in November seems to be the only direction that the gun debate in Washington is heading.
Lawmakers this week held hearings on two gun-related initiatives that drew hundreds of people with strong views both for and against including former Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who three years ago was injured in a gun attack.
Both the Senate and House majorities are divided on the issue, so there's little chance the Legislature will actually vote on either one. As a result, the two initiatives are likely to go on the fall ballot. |

Lawmakers, responding to the shooting massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School that killed 20 children and six educators on Dec. 14, 2012, banned the sale of large-capacity magazines and made more weapons illegal under the state's assault weapons ban.
"While the act burdens the plaintiffs' Second Amendment rights, it is substantially related to the important governmental interest of public safety and crime control," Covello ruled.
Brian Stapleton, the lawyer for a group of Connecticut organizations that support gun rights, pistol permit holders and gun sellers, said he will appeal. |

Some call a firearm the great equalizer among men and women. Whether you agree or not, the number of West Michigan women picking up a gun has skyrocketed recently.
A mother-daughter team at the Silver Bullet is inspiring women to arm themselves. "In 2009 our home was robbed," said Whitney. "It was a terrible feeling, a violation." |

The RIP again, thats the Radically Invasive Projectile is already starting to get negative attention from people who probably dont like guns all that much in the first place.
The cartridge, designed by G2 Research, was just recently introduced and is designed such that its CNC-machined bullet fragments into nine projectiles upon striking a target, splitting off eight sharpened tines that fly in all directions from a solid core that continues to penetrate, ensuring maximum energy transfer while maintaining FBI standards for terminal ballistics. |

A Stacy Campfield-backed proposal that passed the Senate Judiciary Committee seeks to end local governments powers to disallow firearms in municipal parks.
In 2009 the Tennessee Legislature gave city and county governments the ability to opt out of a new statute that allowed guns in public parks, playgrounds and at sports fields.
...
It seems logical to accept that a property owners rights would trump a persons right to carry a firearm on private property. But this bill isnt about private property. Its about public property controlled by local governments. |

It has been a month since the friends first fired their guns in this makeshift shooting area surrounded by a chain-link fence, a shiny RV and the canal. The shots sent shockwaves through the neighborhood.
It became even scarier once the neighbors learned that on Varrieurs side was a state law on the books since 1987. Varrieur said most gun owners like himself had just assumed they couldnt shoot in residential neighborhoods. |

ArmaLite is rolling out a new high-precision AR-15 for 2014 for law enforcement and competition use. The rifle is designed to deliver on versatility, range and accuracy fronts. It is designed to be a semi-automatic compliment to their recent short-action AR-31.
The new rifle is the ArmaLite M-14TBN Rifle, chambered for 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington. A decidedly tactical rifle, the gun is built around a match-grade stainless-steel barrel with a one-in-eight twist to accommodate a very wide range of bullet weights, from lightweight target rounds to heavy self-defense and special-purpose rounds. |

I believe the solution is to pass laws that tax, limit, regulate and register the sale and manufacture of bullets. This would allow the free exercise of Second Amendment rights namely that anyone can freely own whatever weapon they choose. Purchasing bullets (not addressed in the Second Amendment) would be highly regulated by the government. This would provide fresh revenues and make use of these weapons much more difficult. |

In New Hampshire, our two U.S. senators were split on the vote for the bipartisan bill: While Sen. Jeanne Shaheen supported it, Sen. Kelly Ayotte did not. As citizens, its time for us to step up and voice support in favor of background checks for all gun purchases and to close the loopholes for gun shows and online sales.
Thats why I recently joined Veterans for Responsible Solutions, a national constituency of retired flag officers and senior officers and former enlisted service members of the U.S. armed forces founded by former astronaut and Navy Capt. Mark Kelly, husband of former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. |

American gun control policies are another issue involved with the conversations about preventing gun violence. The Second Amendment allows all U.S citizens to bear arms, and a Supreme Court decision in 2008 (District of Columbia v. Heller) ruled that the Constitution protects a citizens right to own a gun for personal use. Despite the Second Amendment, DePauw is able to prohibit all possession and use of firearms and weapons on campus because it is a private university. Such a ban is stated in the student handbook.
I understand the guns dont kill people, people kill people but people kill people with guns, said Edberg. You cant kill a bunch of people [at once] with a plastic knife. |

Representatives Mike Thompson (CA-5), chair of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, Alan Lowenthal (CA-47) and Elizabeth Esty (CT-5) on Thursday introduced a House Resolution that calls for renewed congressional action in dealing with the ever-growing impact of gun violence on American communities.
The legislation is endorsed by the Newtown Action Alliance.
The House Resolution expresses that gun violence is a public health issue and commits Congress to enacting by the end of the 113th Congress common sense steps to curb gun violence without hindering Americans Second Amendment rights. |

Fifty-five percent of Americans reported in a new Gallup poll that they are dissatisfied overall with American gun laws and policies, an increase from 51 percent in 2013 and just 42 percent in 2012.
But the most dramatic rise in dissatisfaction comes from the contingency of Americans who feel gun laws are too strict, rather than from those who think they aren't strict enough. This percentage jumped to 16 percent this year, a rate that more than triples the 5 percent recorded by Gallup last year. Meanwhile, the percentage of Americans favoring stricter gun laws fell seven points in 2014, from 38 to 31 percent. |

Colorados new gun laws limiting the size of ammunition magazines and requiring background checks arent resulting in a rash of criminal charges.
In fact, in at least one Colorado county, the new laws havent resulted in a single case. The Colorado State Patrol also said it wasnt aware of its troopers citing anyone for violations.
Im not surprised, based upon the way the laws were written, Larimer County District Attorney Cliff Riedel told the Fort Collins Coloradoan. The ability to prove the required elements is very difficult. |

Senate Bill 280, sponsored by state Senator Vincent Fort (D-39), would repeal an integral portion of Georgias self-defense law that allows an individual to defend themselves without a duty to retreat, putting your fundamental right to self-defense in jeopardy.
SB 280 is dangerous legislation that stands to empower and benefit violent criminals in their attacks on law-abiding citizens. Law-abiding citizens should not fear criminal prosecution when they stand their ground and defend themselves without retreating from any place they have a legal right to be. This type of senseless and politically motivated legislation puts the rights of the criminal before the rights of a potential victim, and must be stopped. |
