Last week, a Florida senate committee advanced an NRA-backed bill that one critic dubbed a gang members protection act, since it would make it harder for the state to convict killers and others who claim self-defense. Right now, murder charges are handled the way most other criminal charges are handled. The state charges someone with murder. Then, at trial, the defendant is free to offer whatever defense he or she wants whether its a claim of innocence, mental illness, self-defense or what have you.

A few months back I wrote a column entitled, "Guns don't kill people. Really?" My column usually will draw between 30 and 40 responses each week, some positive and some negative. The "Guns don't kill people," column kept me answering emails through much of the next week and beyond. Beginning today, I am going to write three columns that relate to the "gun" issue of The Second Amendment of the Constitution. The others will appear over the next couple of weeks. So, stay tuned.

Sometimes we pick up an item of knowledge that opens up a deeper understanding. Such was the case for me recently when I heard Dr. Larry Arnn of Hillsdale College comment on the Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights, as you recall, is the first 10 amendments to the U.S. Constitution, which were added shortly after the document was approved. It is sort of a Top Ten list of the rights of a free people. Yet, I always wondered if there was a hierarchy within the Bill of Rights. According to Dr. Arnn, there is.

The incongruous headline on the print version of your editorial says it all: Teacher gun bill needs amending (emphasis added). Colorados concealed-carry gun permit law specifically prohibits concealed guns in all public K-12 Colorado schools with exception for the schools designated security guard (CRS 18-12-214).

The semi-automatic firearm is so standard now that many accept it as the way firearms have always worked. Truth is, getting a workable semi-automatic was as groundbreaking as the repeating firearm or center-fire primer. Like so many innovations, the semi-automatic firearm is older than most think, but it took a while to work out the wrinkles enough to get widespread attention. Ferdinand Ritter von Mannlicher, an Austrian engineer and small arms designer, is credited with the first semi-automatic firearma riflein 1885.

A little-known business of gunmaker Sturm, Ruger is suppressors. It's relatively new to that market, but it has made a lot of noise there nonetheless. Image source: Sturm, Ruger. And then there was one. Not that there was a lot of choice beforehand, but after Smith & Wesson decided to pursue the rugged outdoors market and change its corporate identity, Sturm, Ruger (NYSE: RGR) remains the only pure-play gun stock you can buy. For investors deciding whether there's still opportunity inherent in firearms, it's worthwhile to see if it makes sense to buy Ruger.

Armed home invaders knew it was a gun owner they were robbing at 2 a.m. on Jan. 26 in Mississippi. It started with a pistol whipping and escalated to five shots in his legsperhaps to coerce him to open the gun safe. Its an ugly reminder for all of us to be careful who discovers youre a firearm enthusiast.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
The NRA has a point about the inadvisability of simply taking guns away from the populace. If that were possible, it would not disarm that small percentage of the population willing to break the law.... Punishing people who obey the law is backward thinking. Hugh Downs, Veteran ABC newsman
