Politicians and journalists often portray fiction as fact. It is easy to be opinionated, but hard to be informed. This came to mind as I listened to Virginia Democrats tell us wed be safer if we were disarmed.

Fortunately, weve lived with firearms for several hundred years. We know some things that work. Here are a few inconvenient truths Ive found after a few decades of study.

There is no doubt that self-defense is inconvenient, but Id rather be inconvenienced now than be a helpless victim later.

It seems that each day brings news of another attack on unarmed civilians in a public place. Increasingly, these attacks are met with unexpected (to the killer) and successful armed resistance. Attacks on churches and religious groups have been brought to the forefront once again with the recent Texas shooting and assaults on Jews in New York.

Maybe your African safari is just a dream at this stage, but you can make it a reality. In fact, I recommend you do. The cost is much less than a guided North American mule deer or elk hunt. So why not edge closer to your dream safari by deciding which African cartridge/rifle youll shoot?

Perhaps the most famous African cartridge is the .375 H&H Magnum, but a couple of its offspring, the .416 Remington Magnum and .458 Winchester Magnum, offer more power and heavier bullets. Which would be best? Lets examine each in depth and then you can pick your winner.

I dont go in for the New Years Resolution stuff usually. But a trip to the range the other day drove home a point to me and caused me to make one new resolution for 2020. That resolution is simply to practice more. During that trip to the range, I realized that my shooting skills had slipped just a bit, and it took quite a while (and a good deal of ammunition) to get back up to what I am capable of doing.

Broken Arrow State Sen. Nathan Dahm has filed a bill that would prevent lawmakers from creating a red flag law in an attempt to preempt a federal version of the law.

Seventeen states have red flag laws, which allow law enforcement or family members to petition a court to temporarily take away someone's firearms if that person is considered a danger to themselves or others.

Dahm's bill would prohibit the state from passing a red flag law or enforcing federal law.
