As 2020 bows out the Chicago Tribune, looking at a body count exceeding 765 murder victims, reported the Windy City had endured a level of violence in 2020 that reversed recent progress, with homicides increasing by more than 50%, according to official statistics.
Chicago is not alone in its level of mayhem. Newsday quoted New York Police Commissioner Dermot Sheas report to the press that 2020 has been a year in which homicides have risen 41% over 2019 and shootings climbed nearly 100% to levels not seen since the early days of the Bloomberg administration. |

The wadcutter is a very unique type of bullet, very much like a lead cylinder. Almost exclusively used to punch holes in paper with low pressure and lightly loaded cartridges, wadcutters don't change shape or become deformed when fired. They make scoring target sheets extremely easy because the round hole created is very defined compared to any other type of ammunition.

Firearms played a vital role in Americas settlement and expansion, and American women were no strangers to their useand even their manufacture and repair. Both the necessity to hunt and the need for protection from the sometimes hostile native culture made firearms a crucial component in the American experience. An early example is the raid on the Dr. John Woodson home in Jamestown, Va. The Woodsons had come to the New World in 1619 on the George. In 1644, Sarah Woodson was at home with her two young sons and a neighbor, Ligon. Her husband, returning home after attending to a patient, was attacked and killed by Indian marauders within sight of his family.

Colorado Congresswoman-elect Lauren Boebert, alongside 83 other Representatives, have countered an effort by Democratic legislators to disallow politicians from carrying firearms in the Capitol. Boebert, a vocal supporter of gun rights, rallied the group of lawmakers to oppose a measure by Democratic California Rep. Jared Huffman to prohibit gun carry throughout Capitol grounds. Huffman garnered support from 19 other House members and said the current regulations, which allow concealed firearms for politicians, create needless risk in a mid-December letter.

When I first started carrying a gun I hauled around a 5-shot S&W 442 with two HKS speedloaders. Like millions of other concealed carriers, I took the advice of a gun shop guru who insisted that wheel guns were the end-all, be-all in pocket carry. And in many ways they are correct; double-action snub-nosed revolvers are very easy to conceal, flawlessly reliable, and available in calibers that can certainly stop assailants in their tracks. |

If you want comfort and function together in the best possible package, its hard to beat a leather/Kydex hybrid. Throw in top quality leather and stitching, and you have a holster that not only feels great but looks great, too. Such is the case with the Falco Executive Hybrid. I dont do a lot of open carry, but when I do, I want a holster that will both hold my gun correctly and look good doing it. No cheap, tasteless knockoff holster. The Falco Executive Hybrid plays the Oscar-worthy role of the stylish yet fully functional OWB. |

Were beginning to see a lot of interest in competitive precision rimfire shooting. This is a good thing because the competitive shooting sports have always led to better gear for hunters. A new Meopta riflescope, the MeoPro Optika5 2X-10X-42mm Rimfire, seems to be ideally adapted to this game, and its likely to get the attention of rimfire hunters looking to take a high level of precision into the timber. Unfortunately, Meopta, which has a full line of quality riflescopes, is sometimes overlooked by American hunters. |

The biggest problem that I see in defensive shooting classes or when watching shooters at the range is that they are trying to run when they ought to be learning to walk. In most cases, theyve got all the latest gear & guns and seem to be trying to copy the moves that they see on all those internet videos. But the fact is that they cant shoot. Simply put, they have not mastered the basics.

I own many firearms and have a couple of favorites depending on the situation and my mood. I would however argue that the most important firearm that any of us own would probably be the one we carry every day, often referred to as our EDC (everyday carry.) An explanation here might not be necessary but just in case youre wondering why I would say that. It is quite simply a matter of probability.

When Daniel Defense announced the introduction of the Delta 5 Rifle, my first question was why? It's like hearing that Ferrari is getting into pickup trucks. Doesn't mean they won't make a great one, but it's not exactly their core market. Don't get me wrong, all the marketing material, glamor shots, and massive billboard ads at SHOT Show 2020 definitely got me salivating, but there are plenty of great, established bolt-action rifle designs on the market.

One of the running themes of this modest column, which has much to be modest about, is using bad examples of human behavior to illustrate ideas that are basic, yet hopefully useful. Among them is this: If youre going to get into trouble that involves use of a gun, do so for reasons that arent stupid as hell. Otherwise, you might wind up getting called an idiot in the backwater of the press on top of going to jail, and deserving both. Examples of the wrong kind of trouble often includes people shooting each other over total inanities, like parking spots.

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small, complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd. Alexis de Tocqueville |
