IA: Police Give Away Gun Locks

Lie #1: "More than 10 children every day in our country are killed by a firearm, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services." ...

Fact: After adults aged 17-24, crime, suicide and gang activity is removed from that statistic, the number drops to about one child a day.

Lie #2: "Hiawatha police say this isn't a form of gun control, just gun safety."

Fact: When you indoctrinate the populace into the mentality that the way to keep their children safe is to render useless their most effective tool of defense, and use taxpayer dollars to do it, it is a form of gun control.

"Gun traffickers choose poor single women or others strapped for cash and pay them to get gun permits in their name or an alias. Those who qualify can get five gun permits at a time at the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office, the agents said."

"Guns are bought in bulk and usually cost $130 to $150. They sell on the streets for $500 to $700, Samples said. Gun runners tell straw purchasers which guns to buy and sometimes even go with them to the shop and pick them out."

"Straw purchasers buy several hundred guns a year in Fayetteville, Lenczyk said."

"A number of guns stay in the city, he said. Some go to local drug dealers. People selling guns out of town often return with drugs."

"Gun dealers are required to notify authorities when they suspect someone is buying guns illegally, but often don't, he said."

"A 93-year-old woman refused to give up her car keys to a robber and was beaten to death with a hammer, police said Friday."

"Her alleged assailant was arrested later after wrecking her car on an expressway."

"Rosina Seigel was confronted by a man as she returned home Friday afternoon, said Joe Durkin, a spokesman for the Tampa police. The man demanded her car keys and beat her in the head with a hammer when she refused to hand them over, Durkin said."

British Cancel Another Flight as Allies Query U.S.

"In another indication of the turmoil resulting from the increased security measures, an American official said that the cancellation of the British Airways flights was not in response to United States safety concerns, but rather was prompted by the refusal of British pilots to fly with armed marshals on board. The United States put other nations on notice earlier this week that it would not allow certain suspicious flights into its airspace without armed marshals on board."

-------
Interestingly, the British are canceling flights into the US, not because of a security threat, but because pilots won't fly with armed air marshals! The poor dears! Perhaps they would feel more comfortable flying with American fighter aircraft ready to put an AMRAAM air-to-air missile up their tailpipe? Although the Bush administration has disgraced itself by dragging their feet allowing pilots to fly armed, there is some small satisfaction in the fact that they are forcing armed good guys to fly on some flights. It's an admission that a gun in the right hands is the best defense against a terrorist. One small step...

"IN a major action, the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) has arrested six miscreants on charges of possessing illegal firearms. The DCB has seized five pistols, five revolvers, a country revolver and 50 live cartridges."

"On the arrests, DCB police inspector J K Jhala said: 'The weapons were supplied to the Saurashtrians by the two Sikligars who were engaged in the sale of arms. The Sikligars were arrested based on the information received by the DCB on late Thursday night.' "

"Following the arrests, the Sikligars revealed to the police about the supply of weapons to the four Saurashtrians. . . . Jhala added that the Saurashtrians were running diamond factories."

"In 1999, Police Chief Robert Duffys first full year as head of the Rochester PD ended with enthusiasm and optimism. Homicides had fallen to 29 one of just three years in two decades that the city recorded fewer than 30 slayings."

"Officials had hoped it was the beginning of a trend, a promising start of a declining crime rate in Rochester. Four years later, Duffys brio is tempered with frustration."

"Each year since 1999 has been marked by no fewer than 40 killings. And now 2003 has ended as the most violent year of Duffys administration. With 57 confirmed homicides last year, nearly twice as many as 1999, Rochester appears to have returned to the crime standard that marked the early 1990s, when the city averaged 58 killings a year."

"Missouri lawmakers last year passed a concealed-carry law despite a governor's veto, and several Kansas lawmakers said they expected a similar battle this year in Topeka. If such a bill were to pass, it faces a likely veto from Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, who supports concealed-carry permits only for retired law-enforcement officers."

"People on both sides of the issue cite studies about concealed-carry laws' impact on crime. Phil Journey, a gun advocate recently appointed to fill a vacant Senate seat in Wichita, said he didn't want to get hung up on statistics."

"When it really gets down to the real issue, it's whether Nancy the nurse or Mary the mom can get home at night... "If they' re being stalked by an estranged, crazed husband, the peace of mind they get from having that means of self-defense is far more effective than a piece of paper called a protection-from-abuse-act restraining order."

"Mamo says the word fight doesn't characterize the attack that the pit bull was unleashing on Lundgren's spaniel. As the pit bull was biting the spaniel's rear right leg and the spaniel was biting at the pit bull's head, Margini says, she jumped on her dog, putting her in a headlock and grabbing her jaw, forcing her to let go of the spaniel. Jake, the spaniel, scampered off and Lundgren went inside his house, everyone agrees."

"In her effort to pull the two dogs apart, the pit bull's collar slipped off, Margini says. She was trying to put it back on so she could hook on a leash and take Lindsay home, she said, when Lundgren returned with a 9 mm pistol."

"Lundgren shot the pit bull because he was defending his dog and his property, Mamo said. The stick-wielding neighbor, Michael Loblanco, agrees. Fifteen whacks with the stick wouldn't send the pit bull away, Loblanco said. 'I was fearing for my life,' he said."

"Margini says it was her life that was most in danger as Lundgren pointed the gun at her and her pit bull before shooting the dog after it broke from her grip. And the Cornwall police department agreed. Officers arrested Lundgren and the Orange County district attorney's office charged him with one count each of reckless endangerment, a felony, and menacing, a misdemeanor, because, they say, Lundgren pointed his gun 'in the direction of the owner's head.' "The 14-year-old girl arrived at school here on Oct. 17 wearing a low-cut midriff top under an unbuttoned sweater. It was a clear violation of the dress code, and school officials gave her a bowling shirt to put on. She refused. Her mother came to the school with an oversize T-shirt. She refused to wear that, too." ...

"It was a standoff. So the city police officer assigned to the school handcuffed the girl, put her in a police car and took her to the detention center at the Lucas County juvenile courthouse. She was booked on a misdemeanor charge and placed in a holding cell for several hours, until her mother, a 34-year-old vending machine technician, got off work and picked her up." ...

"More journalists have been killed in Iraq than in any conflict in the past decade. As postwar instability continues, a debate has arisen about how far journalists should go to protect themselves." ...

"Carrying a gun is rare among journalists, who rely on their status as non-combatants in war zones. The traditional wisdom had been that a journalist must take care not to appear to be the enemy - or worse, a spy - and thereby tarnish the reputation of other journalists. Modern warfare is forcing news organizations to reexamine their policies."

"For all of its law-and-order bluster, this administration has done a poor job of enforcing laws prohibiting gun trafficking, selling guns to minors and lying on criminal background check forms to buy guns. It has also encouraged the National Rifle Association to push bills in Congress to weaken the Brady law, grant the gun industry immunity from lawsuits and block efforts to reauthorize the ban on assault weapons."

"The Bush administration even has failed to do its part to deliver justice to the victims in the Washington, D.C., sniper case. Yes, John Allen Muhammad is awaiting the death penalty and his young sidekick, Lee Boyd Malvo, will spend life in prison for the murderous spree that claimed 10 lives."

"Yet federal prosecutors so far have brought no charges against the Tacoma, Wash., gun dealer who 'lost' the Bushmaster XM-15 assault rifle used in the sniper killings. Federal investigators allege that the gun dealer willfully disregarded federal gun laws by failing to keep required records on hundreds of weapons, including the Bushmaster."

Filing charges against the gun dealer for falling victim to theft is like charging a rape victim for facilitating the rape by wearing a skirt that's too short.

ACT police have sought the Government's permission to extend the gun buy-back scheme for five more days.

The scheme has netted 660 firearms in six months and paid out more than $1 million in compensation to gun-owners.

Laws introduced last June prohibited high-powered and easily hidden handguns and aim to tighten firearm controls across Australia.

Police Detective Sergeant Mick Sinclair says the scheme expired two days ago, but could be extended next week because firearm registries were closed over Christmas.

"Just to give those people who weren't able to physically hand the guns over the counter an opportunity but again, it is subject to approval from the ACT Government and the Commonwealth Government," he said.

Pistol clubs say some handgun licence fees which came into effect yesterday have gone up by 300 per cent.

The Combined Firearms Council of Victoria says the new fees reflect an expensive regulatory process rather than providing a public benefit.

Council president Sebastian Ziccone says people wanting to take up handgun shooting sports as a probationary licence holder will pay $75 for a police check.

"If he's only allowed to use a gun at a club, then why does it cost so much when to get a police check on any other individual applying for employment in sensitive areas, the cost is only $12?" he said.

"Public Safety Minister Anne McLellan has launched a cabinet-level review of Canada's controversial gun registry to try to make the much criticized program more effective and cost-efficient."

"McLellan, whose responsibilities include the Canada Firearms Centre, said in a year-end interview the goal is to protect Canadians from violence without unnecessary spending."

-------
No registration scheme anywhere in the world has kept any population from violence. The only thing it has done is set the stage for confiscation.

Wichita-based U.S. Testing Laboratory, a certified firearms safety device lab, recently tested a new gun-locking system now being distributed in California.

The device, called the Life Save-R Gunlock, was created in Nevada and just received approval from the California Department of Justice Firearms Safety Division.

Save-R Gunlock allows a tubular steel shaft to be inserted into the barrel of a gun. Only someone with the four-digit code can unlock it.

The U.S. Testing Laboratory is located at 7447 W. 33rd North in Wichita.

-------
They must have really kind criminals in California. Would they really wait while their victim keyed in the combination, giving their prey a chance to defend themselves?

"A proposed new law that could have banned the sale or purchase of many muzzleloading rifles and the possession of many shotguns is being pulled from the state Legislature calendar and will not be introduced, said its sponsor."

"Assemblywoman Loretta Weinberg (D-Bergen) said concerns expressed by hunters is prompting her to yank bill A-3942 less than a month after its introduction. As of Wednesday, the state Legislature Web site listed the bill as remaining active, but Weinberg said she 'pulled the bill off the agenda.' " ...

"In essence, the bill would have classified weapons of 50 caliber or greater as being illegal 'destructive devices.' Currently, the definition of those devices involves weapons of 60 caliber or greater."

"Tory leader Michael Howard pledged yesterday to give more rights to householders to use force against burglars in what will be seen as the first resurgence of his hardline credentials."

"He said the law should be reviewed in the wake of the case of Tony Martin, the Norfolk farmer jailed for killing a 16-year-old intruder." ...

"Two years ago, the then Shadow Home Secretary Oliver Letwin scrapped the party's commitment to allow householders greater rights to self-defence - introduced in the wake of the Martin case - arguing that 'one doesn't want to create a society in which people are liable to be mown down if they enter a property'."

No, he would much rather create a society where the disarmed populace is preyed upon by armed thugs. That's his idea of justice? How sick!

"It's a group no parent wants to join."

"For Jeff Williams, membership began in March 2001. For Polly Powell, it was moments before the end of the school year in May 2000. And for Cindy Carter, it was when she held her dying brother in her arms last summer."

"They are parents of children who have killed." ...

"Spurred by a horrific bond, they draw support from each other and a shared mission to join others in changing how justice is delivered to juveniles."

He pulled a gun and demanded cash, police said.

The robber later fled in a newer-model Nissan Sentra.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
America does not go abroad in search of monsters to destroy. She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all. She well knows that by one enlisting under other banners than her own, were they even the banners of foreign independence, she would involve herself beyond the power of extrication in all the wars of interest and intrigue, of individual avarice, envy and ambition, which assume the colors and usurp the standards of freedom. JOHN QUINCY ADAMS (1821)
