Buy, Buy, Buy

While we stumble along economically with bailouts, buyouts, and poor sales in almost all sectors, two products in America are seeing dramatic increases in sales: guns and ammo. People who never owned a gun before are buying; people are buying multiples of military style weapons and ammo is being bought by the case instead of by the box.

Many explain this away as folks simply worried that Obama will move to ban certain firearms, especially those referred to by the ignorant as "assault weapons," I believe the motivation to buy firearms and ammunition goes much deeper.

More and more Americans are becoming increasingly aware of the storm that is brewing on the horizon, a storm driven by the possibility of a complete economic collapse.

The more astute are reading the handwriting on the wall: military combat units being assigned for stateside duty to quell domestic disturbances, a militarization of law enforcement, and the fear of what will happen when the state is no longer able to provide monthly checks to the millions currently living on government handouts labeled as "entitlements."

Intelligence officers created a voluminous file on Norfolk-based People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, calling the group a "security threat" because of concerns that members would disrupt the circus. Angry consumers fighting a 72 percent electricity rate increase in 2006 were targeted. The DC Anti-War Network, which opposes the Iraq war, was designated a white supremacist group, without explanation.

One of the possible "crimes" in the file police opened on Amnesty International, a world-renowned human rights group: "civil rights."

According to hundreds of pages of newly obtained police documents, the groups were swept into a broad surveillance operation that started in 2005 with routine preparations for the scheduled executions of two men on death row.

The operation has been called a "waste of resources" by the current police superintendent and "undemocratic" by the governor.

The only place Jack Betz goes without his concealed handgun is his workplace.

Other than that, he leaves when he sees a sign prohibiting concealed handguns. By the end of this week, national parks will be one more place no longer off-limits for him.

"We should never have been forbidden to [carry guns there] in the first place," said Betz, 49, a concealed-handgun instructor and pizza deliverer in Fort Worth. "We live in a dangerous world.

There is a certain irony here. Those who assert that the Second Amendment grants an individuals right to have a weapon, forget the historical basis for that right was the need for an armed citizenry to repel threats at a moments notice not for quasi-law enforcement purposes but as a well-trained ,militia to defend the collective society.

...

To my friends, do not dismiss this out of hand. Do not engage in characterizing the possibility as a wish for a communist or Nazi-like regime. We have flourished as a society that sprang forth for the Minutemen of Lexington and Concord, with hope and a dedication to the strengthening of our people. Lets not stop now.

What would you call the No. 1 goal of the NRA?

Weve been around for 137 years, and the one thing were dedicated to is the preservation of this great American freedom (to bear arms) for all law-abiding Americans, says Andrew Arulanandam, director of public affairs.

Does the election of Barack Obama affect that?

Based on the president-elects record as a state legislator and as a U.S. senator, I think gun owners have reason to be concerned. I think you add to that the record of the vice president-elect and the record of senior appointees that have been named so far, and I think all that points to a lot of reasons for gun owners and hunters to be concerned.

I came to the conclusion that I am right-wing because what some of my misguided liberal friends fail to understand is that I can hold core liberal beliefs yet support causes and ideas normally held by those on the right. Some of these include the right to bear arms along with the least amount of restriction of possession of said arms as long as one is trained in use. All types of firearms fit the bill though I dont really see the every day need to know how to operate a weapon that is capable of mowing down a small copse of trees unless of course you live in Clay, are drunk, bored, and in the need of firewood.

For at least 15 years, Hertig has taught a self-defense class at York College, where he is also a criminal justice professor. He also has instructed law enforcement officers in self-defense tactics, he said.

The paranoia Hertig refers to starts with being aware of one's surroundings, being smart and alert, and knowing how to fight back or get away safely in a potentially violent situation, he said.

Whether in York's downtown, the streets near York College or in surrounding municipalities, police logs often tell of assaults and robberies.

The Brady firearms restriction fruitcakes are suing the Bush administration over the new rule to allow concealed carry of firearms in national parks. The Supreme Court already determined the Second Amendment to be an individual's right. Thus, the federal government was never given the authority to restrict the right of law abiding citizens to keep and bear arms. Concealed carry authorization requires some degree of training and a thorough criminal background check, so these persons are clearly one of the least criminal group in the nation.

If you've arrived at the same conclusion as me then you have a variety of options. Your first option is to purchase a defensive weapon. Things like Tasers and pepper spray are intended to disorient an attacker so a victim has time to escape. Little harm is done, but the assailant knows not to mess with you; however, stunning and spraying isn't enough. This is America - it's go big, or go home. If someone makes the mistake of assaulting you, you may want to do more than just teach him or her a lesson. It's in your best interest to seriously injure or even kill such a wrongdoer.

With speculation swirling that Obama and a Democratic majority in Congress will pursue new gun control legislation, news reports have documented steep increases in gun sales across the country.

Barack Obama has said he believes the Second Amendment does give an "individual right" to gun ownership, and that he supports "common sense" gun-control measures.

While the National Rifle Association is already campaigning hard against any new gun legislation, Paul Helmke, the president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, told the political news Web site TheHill.com that Obama sought only "common sense gun laws" and not a gun ban.

Kill any green deer lately?

Chances are you have, if you followed the prime directive of ethical hunting that you eat what you shoot.

A wild deer, with its bulk built from acorns and clover, supplies some of the most environmentally-responsible protein a person can eat. It's a source that requires less water, fossil fuels or carbon emissions than the meat and even the vegetables Americans typically consume.

D.C.: District targets spots to establish gun stores

The District will allow gun stores along major commercial corridors in every corner of the city, under new rules recently adopted by the D.C. Zoning Commission.
Emergency regulations issued by the commission allow gun stores to open along most commercial corridors not zoned for neighborhood retail, throughout much of downtown and in a handful of industrial zones. But because each store must be at least 300 feet away from the nearest school, library, home, playground and church, the number of specific possible locations is very limited.
The rules are far less restrictive than those adopted in July a month after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the Districts 32-year-old handgun ban.

Whats happening in my country is also happening in your country. You dont even know it, but youre the Indians of the 21st Century, and thats very sad. Russell Means, Indian Activist and Facilitator of the newly created Independent Republic of Lakota.

Manifest Destiny had run out of room, and the American Empire....now girded the entire North American continent...

It is a glorious fact that America's private gun owners possess more firearms than the combined armies and police forces of the entire world. It is that fact, and perhaps it alone, that explains why the Regime hasn't succeeded -- yet -- in transforming our country into one giant Rez. We should never assume that this cannot change, in a hurry.

Though I believe that most gun owners are responsible people, it seems clear to me that some people simply shouldn't have guns. To get an expert opinion on gun rights, read David Codrea's blog.

Lomax, the man who was shot in the arm, claims he and his family were only laughing at funny lines in the movie. If it's true that other people asked the family to pipe down before the shooter became involved, it's far more likely that the family was being more disruptive than simply laughing at funny parts of the movie.

Submitter's note: Some people, this author posits, shouldn't own guns.

A new proposal by the D.C. Zoning Commission could allow for gun stores in every quadrant of the nation's capital. The commission has adopted temporary emergency rules that would allow gun shops to open in some industrial areas, throughout downtown D.C. and in areas that aren't zoned for neighborhood retail. The stores would have to be at least 300 feet from a library, school, church, home or playground.

An apartment building in the Cedar Trail Village on Boyson Road was evacuated for six hours Sunday after police found potentially dangerous materials.

KCRG-TV9 reported an apartment resident called police after he heard what sounded like a gun being cocked in a neighbors apartment. He had gone to the apartment to complain about loud banging noises about 3 a.m.

The man did not reply when police arrived so they kicked in his door.

While the economy may be wounded, gun dealers say sales are exploding at the annual Arms Fair at the City Center in Saratoga Springs.

Some business owners in this crime-plagued city say recent enforcement of a decades-old ordinance prohibiting some types of barbed wire and razor wire is making Newark more attractive to thieves.

Burglaries are up 17 percent from 2007 through November in Newark, which has a young, charismatic mayor who has vowed to help the city rebound from decades of official inaction, incompetence and outright criminality.

The city is aggressively courting new investment and development, but people who have been ordered to downgrade their fences say officials are worried more about aesthetics than security.

In Iowa, sheriffs decide who gets a concealed weapons permit

Within Iowa, the final authority to issue a permit lies with the county sheriff, who "may" issue a weapon to those who have no history of substance abuse, felonies, domestic abuse or other kinds of violence. Each sheriff is allowed to consider each applicant's reason for a concealed weapon.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
The NRA has a point about the inadvisability of simply taking guns away from the populace. If that were possible, it would not disarm that small percentage of the population willing to break the law.... Punishing people who obey the law is backward thinking. Hugh Downs, Veteran ABC newsman
