"In mid-November, Mexican police Officer Alan Rodriguez caught a pair of armed bandits who had just assaulted a group of immigrants."
"The assault took place in Sasabe, in Sonora, but the .38- and .22-caliber guns, as with most weapons used by border bandits, came from the United States. The two said they'd purchased them in Tucson."
"Guns are largely illegal in Mexico and difficult for private citizens to attain. The application process can take years and includes an examination of a person's 'moral character' and proven need for a gun."
"So criminals turn largely to the United States with its more liberal gun laws." |

"It turns out that pepper spray may not do you a lot of good when it is raining or snowing. A woman is just as likely to disable herself as the attacker when it's windy or when using the spray indoors."
"Knives and baseball bats are particularly problematic, because women have to get very close to their attackers to use them, and male criminals that is, most criminals tend to be much stronger physically than their female victims. When it comes to physical contact, women generally lose those fights."
"The advantage of a gun is that it is ideal for keeping the criminal far away from the victim. ..." |

"Today matters are very different and getting worse. We're surrounded by police-state 'security' measures that do little to make us safe but a lot to make us feel humiliated, bullied, and spied upon."
"Our neighbors, utility workers, bank tellers, and store clerks are encouraged to report anything we do that might be 'suspicious' (and 'suspicious activities' can include things as innocent as buying 'too many' coffee filters, batteries, or cans of lye for opening drains or making soap)."
"Virtually all our freedoms are being curtailed from the right to travel or speak freely to the right to have our homes secure against violent invasion by military-style police." |

"What did the Founding Fathers mean by the words 'well regulated?' Well -- they certainly did NOT mean 'controlled by the government.' According to the Random House College Dictionary, there are four definitions of the phrase, which were also in use during colonial times.
1) To control or direct by a rule, principle, method, etc. 2) To adjust to some standard or requirement as for amount, degree, etc. 3) To adjust so as to ensure accuracy of operation. 4) To put in good order."
"How do we know what the phrase means in the context of the Second Amendment? I think Alexander Hamilton provides a pretty good clue in Federalist 29..." |

"The most positive thing resulting from the passage of the so-called 'gun liability' bill in the U.S. House and Senate is that as soon as the president signs it into law, all pending lawsuits against gun manufacturers and dealers by victims of gun crimes are history. About 50 red state Democrats joined the Republican majority in the House of Representatives in putting the responsibility for gun crimes where it belongs with the criminals." "If John Kerry, Hillary Clinton and Mark Dayton would have prevailed in the Senate, legitimate well-regulated American gun manufacturers and dealers, plus thousands of employees would eventually be on unemployment. ..." |

"As the results of a vote on new anti-crime legislation aimed at illegal gun sales and criminals who kill police officers was announced in a state assembly special session in Albany on Dec. 21, Assemblyman Tom Alfano (R-Elmont) was on the phone with Elmont resident Leslyn Stewart, conveying the news." "After the Crimes Against Police Act was approved, 133-2, Alfano told her that once it passed the Senate and Governor George Pataki signed it into law later in the day, it would be called 'Dillon's Law.' Her husband, Dillon, an NYPD cop, was shot and killed in November by a man accused of shooting an off-duty police officer weeks earlier. The new law intensifies penalties for those convicted of injuring or killing police officers and increases the penalties for illegal gun trafficking." |

"Arguing that the political tide has turned against the National Rifle Association, Mayor Daley on Wednesday unveiled yet another package of gun-control legislation that looks a lot like the old one."
"Once again, the mayor wants to ban assault weapons, mandate trigger locks, license gun dealers and limit handgun purchases to one-a-month, per-person."
"The only new wrinkle is the mayor's offer to include a 10-year 'sunset provision' to make the one-gun-a-month limit, as he put it, 'even more palatable.'"

"The National Rifle Association has long championed phrases like, 'Guns dont kill people, people kill people.'" "For a group of concerned residents in Boxborough, however, that same idea is focused more on prevention: before people with guns kill people, people should ban guns." "Suzanne Schmitt, a 17-year Boxborough resident, has drafted and gathered names on a petition to prohibit the discharge of firearms outright. By pounding the pavement and enlisting help, Schmitt convinced 109 Boxborough residents to sign on the line -- 89 more than are needed for a resident-driven article at the annual Town Meeting in May." |

"Paul Martin is accused of promising to ban handguns as an inept election gimmick but I don't think that's entirely true. Guns, long and short, have killed more than 1,200 Canadians each year for the past 10 years: 815 Canadians committed suicide, 156 were killed with firearms in homicides in 1997, the last year for which figures are available and 45 died in accidents."
"That is considerable mayhem for a peaceful country and the death toll is rising. The economic cost of gun death and injury in Canada has been estimated at $6 billion per year."
------- Some people never learn. While he quotes statistics about the costs of gun crime, he ignores statistics that point to abject failure of Britain's gun ban. |
