A man was in critical condition late Monday after being shot in the head by his wife, police said.
The man, whose name was not released but who police said is 44, was shot once during an alcohol-fueled fight with his wife about 10:30 p.m., Tulsa Police Capt. Jonathan Brooks said.
The 58-year-old woman, whose name also was withheld, told police that she had taken the handgun away from her husband and fired in self-defense, Brooks said.
She and her 30-year-old daughter were taken to police headquarters for questioning along with a third person who had information about the attack, he said. |

The 61-year-old owner of a Phoenix jewelry store shot and wounded two would-be robbers who walked into the business and pepper sprayed him in the face, police said.
The men entered the store near 32nd Street and Bell Road Monday afternoon and attempted to sell a watch, said Detective Cindy Scott of the Phoenix Police Department.
The owner said he could not purchase the watch and both men left the store, Scott said.
"About ten minutes later, the suspects returned and pepper sprayed the victim in the face," Scott said.
One of the men then removed a metal baton and began to smash the glass to the jewelry display cabinet, Scott said. |

Gun owners seem to be sweating bullets these days since Barack Obama was elected president.
With Obama's record on gun control which includes endorsing an Illinois handgun ban, co-sponsoring a bill to limit purchases to one gun per month and supporting a ban on semi-automatic weapons gun owners in big cities and small towns throughout the country are concerned that their Second Amendment rights may come under attack in an Obama administration and are buying up guns and ammunition in record numbers. |

Even without his trillion-dollar bailout, President-elect Barack Obama has already helped one segment of the economy: gun sales.
"We can't even keep them in stock," said John Massa, owner of the pawn shops Beachside Pawn & Jewelry, Best Pawn & Jewelry and Blue Diamond Pawn & Jewelry in Brevard County.
Some 15 percent to 20 percent of Massa's sales normally are new and used guns.
The gun business received its post-election bounce from those who fear the Democratic president and Congress might restrict gun ownership.
"They're trying to get them before they put the squeeze on (gun purchases)," Massa said. "It's mostly handguns." |

In a free society, we must constantly remind ourselves of the huge distinction between rights and entitlements. We have the right to pursue happiness; we have no entitlement to happiness. We have a right to seek a sex change; we have no entitlement to a sex change operation. We have the right to own a gun; we have no entitlement to a gun. If the Second Amendment were interpreted as an entitlement to guns, rather than a right, government could order the pacifist owner of a tackle and bait shop to sell guns and ammo. After all, the victim of a dangerous stalker may need a gun for self-defense. One can imagine endless righteous causes in which it's tempting to have government simply order one party to serve the wants and needs of another. |

A BART police officer struggling to handcuff a 22-year-old man stood up over the facedown Hayward resident and fired a single shot into his back while a handful of officers watched, a video taken by a train passenger apparently shows.
The attorney for the family of Oscar Grant III, fatally shot by an unidentified BART officer early New Year's Day, said Sunday he plans to file a $25 million lawsuit against the department and asked prosecutors to consider filing murder charges against the officer. |

The Dallas City Council's Public Safety Committee is scheduled to be briefed Monday on the city's homicide rate. The good news is that it is down, significantly, from 197 in 2007 to 154 in 2008, a nearly 22 percent drop. What I found troubling, however, was slide 11 of the briefing, that lists the types of weapons used in the commission of these murders. Nearly two-thirds of them, 102 of the 154, were committed by those using handguns, another argument for outlawing these weapons. |

I was walking through a local sporting goods store the other day, and just out of curiosity, decided to take a spin past the firearms section. Keep in mind that while I'm a strong believer in 2nd Amendment rights, I've never had a particular desire to have a gun myself... while I didn't stop to shop in the firearms department, I noticed that--on a Friday afternoon--there seemed to be quite a few people who WERE shopping. Some were buying ammunition in fact, as I was standing in another aisle, one of the employees walked buy me carrying a rather large box of ammunition--and as I watched, I noticed that he was replacing it in their storage cabinet which had apparently been cleared out during the course of business that day. |

Just got out of a meeting that Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle held with the state Capitol press corps. Will add to this through the day, but Cagle was emphatic about one issue in particular. A bill to expand the public areas in which a permitted, concealed weapon can be carried will be going nowhere. State Sen. Mitch Seabaugh (R-Sharpsburg) has been working on a bill to revamp the state code on the issue of weapons at public assemblies, which could have allowed concealed weapons licensees to pack heat in churches and on university campuses. Let me be very clear. I have no appetite for it, Cagle said. |

AUSTIN Texas legislators can't help themselves. Even before their upcoming session hits its stride, they will do something to get national attention, the kind that makes TV hosts snicker and roll their eyes. A surefire attention-getter this session will be an anticipated bill to let Texans openly pack pistols on their hips, in their belts or elsewhere in public view as they go about their business. Although many other states apparently already allow the practice, the "cowboy" image of holstered Texans strolling down Main Street or through the mall, arms dangling at their sides and wary eyes on the lookout for trouble, is an easy script for late-night satire. Remember Matt Dillon, the quick-draw TV marshal? |

Polk County has been very busy lately with gun related crimes. This one entails a stray bullet and a 12 year old boy.
Caleb Brown, 12, was walking with a friend Monday, minding their own business and all of the sudden Brown was shot in the leg. There was no gunman in site. Where did the bullet come from?
What Brown and his friend didnt know was blocks away some teenagers were fighting in the Carefree Cove subdivision when one of them elected to pull a gun and fire several shots. Apparently there were several weapons displayed during this altercation.
Apparently the teen is a pretty bad shot. He seemed to miss anything close to him and ended up shooting Brown in the leg blocks away. No other injuries were reported at the scene. |

Repulican Lt. Gov. Cagle, speaking with reporters at his Capitol office, said he had no appetite to revisit the concealed carry law. Sen. Mitch Seabaugh (R-Sharpsburg) has been considering a bill that would expand the places where guns would be allowed. The current law bans weapons at places the public gathers, a description that includes churches and college campuses.

The general public was told this landmark Second Amendment decision was a victory for gun owners declaring for the first time the right to bear arms was not just a states right but the right of individual U.S. citizens. Looked like a victory? But it wasnt. In fact it is the biggest backdoor anti-gun ruling in American history.
At the end of the ruling can be found the Devil in the details:
The Supreme Court wrote that nothing in our opinion should be taken to cast doubt on longstanding prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons and the mentally ill, or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings, or laws imposing conditions on the commercial sale of arms. |

On the one hand, its such obvious propaganda, such over-the-top and cartoonish evil, that denouncing it should be as unnecessary as denouncing smallpox. On the other handit just makes you wanna puke, doesnt it?
Yes, ABC will actually, shamelessly broadcast the first episode in its new "reality" series, "Homeland Security USA," tonight. Its website touts this hours worth of indoctrination each week as "an unprecedented look at" the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the "men and women" who "safeguard our country and enforce our laws." (Twice in three sentences, we learn that "women" are right up there with the guys in safeguarding and enforcing. How endearing. One appreciates equal-opportunity thuggery in a race to the bottom.) "Every day," ABC breathlessly continues, these goons "patrol more than 100,000 miles of America's borders. This territory includes airports, seaports, land borders, international mail centers, the open seas, mountains, deserts and even cyberspace." Im sorta fuzzy on how Akron-Canton Airport in Ohio or the internet constitutes a "border," but that insult to our intelligence is the least of the offenses here. |

Laying amid the pistols used by either the Nazis or Allied forces in World War II was the elusive and rare Singer .45 ACP pistol. "There were only 500 of these made in 1941," said Charles Kaplan, of the U.S. Gun Exchange in Sloatsburg, N.Y. "It's the holy grail for gun collectors. It's like having the rarest stamp." The $85,000 pistol was one of thousands of historic, modern and used guns on display over the weekend at the East Coast Fine Arms Show held at the Hyatt Regency Greenwich. More than 2,000 people attended the annual event, which is organized by the Westchester Collectors, Inc. |

The National Rifle Association says the San Francisco Housing Authority is preparing to drop its blanket handgun ban in public housing. NRA lawyer CD Michel (MEE-shell) says the agreement, which settles a federal lawsuit, hasn't been finalized. But he says if the settlement is approved as expected, the housing authority will allow public housing tenants to keep legally obtained handguns. In exchange, the housing authority won't be required to pay any damages or attorney fees. The NRA sued the housing authority a day after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a gun ban in Washington D.C.and ruled that individual citizens have a right to keep handguns. |
Maryland's DNA Database

The interview was very interesting, but I couldn't help feeling as I listened that the guests, especially Attorney General McCarthy, were bending over backwards to convince listeners that they had thought of every possible abuse and had addressed it. Yet these rules only apply for Maryland law enforcement - which shares their database with other agencies - and the prosecution for violations will fall on the same system (see the postscript on the article Manuel linked to for the effectiveness of prosecuting government officials).
For statists, including those who are wary of civil rights violations and are interested in finding out the truth in prosecutions (as these guests claim), DNA databases are very difficult to deal with. We can all acknowledge that there are heinous crimes and DNA evidence can help solve crimes and prevent truly despicable criminals from committing more crimes. The problems and concerns surrounding DNA databases only present themselves because there is a state monopoly on law enforcement. One quote from the show should give you the heebie-jeebies:
Kojo: "Why not just stick everybody's DNA [in the database]?..."
State Senator Raskin: "...What turns me off of universal DNA recording is we don't even have Universal Health Insurance. But I think, if we had Universal Health Insurance and the whole society took responsibility for guaranteeing the public health of all its citizens, I think that's something that we'd have to seriously examine [with precautions]... |

Congress have no power to disarm the militia. Their swords, and every other terrible implement of the soldier, are the birthright of an American... The unlimited power of the sword is not in the hands of either the federal or state government, but, where I trust in God it will ever remain, in the hands of the people. Tench Coxe, Pennsylvania Gazette, Feb. 20, 1788. |
