Pilots Still Unarmed

"Screening is hardly perfect. Knives, box-cutters and long scissors too frequently make it through security, but the problem is even worse: No matter how carefully screeners monitor X-ray machines and metal detectors, many weapons are essentially undetectable without a full-body search (e.g., ceramic or plastic knives taped to an inside thigh). Without full-body searches, determined terrorists will get weapons on planes. At New York's JFK airport alone, two dead stowaways have been found in the wheel-wells of airplanes in the last two weeks."

"Few experts have much faith in the effectiveness of the newly reinforced cockpit doors. Engineering constraints are the key: To settle a bet last summer, an overnight cleaning crew at Washington's Dulles Airport rammed a drink cart into one of the new doors on a United Airlines plane. The door reportedly broke off its hinges. The doors on European airlines generally don't provide even that much protection."

"Air marshals can't do it all. Pilots claim that while at least one-third of flights from Washington's Reagan National are covered with air marshals, the rest of the country is being ignored. Only a small fraction of U.S. carrier flights to Europe are covered, and then only one day a week."

"Opposition to the U.S. demand that air carriers deploy armed marshals on certain flights into the United States increased Tuesday, as airlines in South Africa and Europe said they would rather cancel flights than carry the guards."

"South African Airways followed Thomas Cook Airlines, the charter flight division of the big European travel company, in saying it would refuse to conduct flights carrying armed guards. Earlier, airlines in Portugal, Denmark and Sweden took similar stances. The British transport secretary, Alistair Darling, on Tuesday defended the deployment of marshals as 'responsible and prudent' and said they would be used "where appropriate."

The city agreed to pay $3 million to the family of Amadou Diallo, the unarmed West African immigrant shot to death by police nearly five years ago, its chief lawyer said Tuesday.

City lawyer Michael Cardozo said city officials and the police department "deeply regret" the shooting.

Diallo was shot to death at his Bronx apartment building in February 1999. Officers had said they mistook his wallet for a gun. They were acquitted of criminal charges.

Diallo's parents had sought $81 million in their negligence lawsuit against the city.

-------
Diallo was shot 41 times. $3M is chump change to NYC. Citizens who carry a firearm for self-defense in NYC are prosecuted as violent felons.

"New Mexico's State Supreme Court has done the correct thing in allowing the new concealed carry statute to stand, the CCRKBA said today."

"The state high court, without comment, rejected a challenge to the new law by an anti-gun physician and child advocacy group. Under the new statute, law-abiding New Mexicans over the age of 25 who qualify will be able to obtain a two-year carry license. They must complete a background check and firearms training course."

" 'Anti-gunners like those in New Mexico have revealed themselves as being against the rights of honest citizens to defend themselves against criminals,' said CCRKBA Executive Director Joe Waldron."

You can die for your country at 18 in a hot war in which you carry a handgun and a machinegun, but you must wait seven more years, in New Mexico, to be "allowed" to carry in your own neighborhood.

" 'Chicago finished off the year with more murders than New York or Los Angeles,' said Second Amendment Foundation founder Alan Gottlieb. 'During the past 12 months, 599 people were murdered in Chicago, three more than in New York, where 596 people were slain, and about 100 more than in Los Angeles.' "

"Gottlieb called it 'remarkable' that Chicago, New York and Los Angeles have some of the nation's strictest gun laws, but even so, they still lead the nation when it comes to the number of homicides."

" 'Were not angry, but were hurt,' said the Rev. Thomas Fant, pastor of the church for seven years."

" 'The young man needs help,' Mr. Fant said. 'The church is where you come for help, but hes alienated himself from that now. If he would have come and asked, we would have tried to help him.' "

"On Sunday, just after services ended, a young robber entered the church on City Park Avenue and demanded money."

"American gun lovers by the millions pay a heavy price for their passion. Almost 47 percent of active shooters suffer from noticeable hearing loss, and 34 percent report enough hearing loss to interfere with conversation and other social activities, according to a study carried out for E.A.R. Inc., a company producing hearing protection devices. When the gun enthusiasts go to shooting ranges for target practice, wearing ear protection is generally mandatory. But when they go hunting, they are less diligent about protecting their ears. Most often, they are unaware that their hearing is being reduced because the damage from unprotected exposure to gunfire is gradual."
