The White House is working with aides to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg on a broader package of gun-violence initiatives than an assault weapons ban and high-capacity ammunition clips, according to a report. A White House working group headed by Vice President Joe Biden is looking at requiring universal background checks for gun buyers, tracking the movement and sale of weapons through a national database, strengthening mental health checks and stiffening penalties for carrying guns near schools or giving them to minors, sources told The Washington Post.

Reformed crooks say the New York newspaper that published a map of names and addresses of gun owners did a great service to their old cronies in the burglary trade.

Frank Abagnale, [snip] is perhaps the most famous reformed thief to ever earn a legitimate living by offering the public insight into the criminal mind, called the newspapers actions reprehensible.

It is unbelievable that a newspaper or so called journalist would publish the names and addresses of legal gun owners, including federal agents, law enforcement officers and the like, [snip] This would be equivalent to publishing the names of individuals who keep substantial sums of money, jewelry and valuables in their home.

Staten Island's Community Education Council is voting Monday on a proposal to hire 300 to 500 retired police officers to serve as plainclothes security guards, carrying concealed weapons and rotating among the city's 1,750 schools.

Antique firearms vendor Stuart English said that for some of the spectators at the 8th annual East Coast Fine Arms Show, walking through the show was similar to a trip to the museum.
Hundreds of people poured into the Stamford Plaza Hotel for the antique firearms show, which continues today from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and many of the attendees stopped to chat about the history behind the firearms.
"Some people have no intent on buying anything," said English, of Milford, N.H. "It's entertainment. It's like going to the movies." ...
Many were weary about the media's presence at the show.

Senate Republicans introduced a set of gun-control proposals today, including tougher laws against the sale and possession of illegal guns. The measures call for stiffer penalties against those who use guns in crimes and a first-degree murder charge for those who kill emergency responders in the line of duty. We need to target illegal guns so innocent people dont become targets for criminals who have them, Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos, R-Nassau County, said in a statement. The statistics prove that the overwhelming majority of gun crimes involve the use of illegal guns.

Limiting private sales will not affect a criminals ability to obtain a firearm. Reinstating an Assault Weapons Ban will not stop these horrible incidents from happening as is clearly evidenced by tragedies like the Columbine shooting that took place during a time when we as a nation lived under an Assault Weapons Ban and it had no effect in stopping that tragedy from happening.

Lacson revived his call to stop the issuance of a Permit to Carry Firearms Outside Residence for civilians in order to address the series of gun-related crimes.

In a press statement on Monday, January 7, the former National Police chief said civilians must be barred from carrying firearms following the spate of gun-related crimes during the New Year revelry, and shooting rampage and shootouts in past days.

Another description of the conflict is individualism versus communal values. Yet for many gun owners, duty to their community is precisely why firearms are so important. For example, the Vermont family man who keeps a shotgun to protect his wife and children from home invaders has decided that he will put himself in deadly peril in order to protect those for whom he is responsible. That same decision is made every day by the public school teachers in Utah and in some Texas school districts who (after safety training and a fingerprint-based background check) lawfully carry concealed handguns at school, to save their students in case of attack.

The "AR" in AR-15 doesn't stand for "assault rifle" as some believe. Instead it referred to the company that created it for the military in the 1950s, ArmaLite, according to a company history of the gun. It was renamed the M16 for the U.S. military, while the version available to civilians remained the AR-15.

The modern AR-15 still looks like its military cousin. But it is not a machine gun. Being a semiautomatic rifle, the AR-15 fires only one shot for each trigger pull. A standard model has a 30-round magazine using .223 ammunition, though they can be modified to accept other calibers and configurations.

"They're like Legos for adults," said Smith, who shoots the AR-15 for competition purposes.

The gun nuts, like the Tea Party, have become the duped soldiers of the NRA and the GOP, carrying forth their message of liberty, individual freedom and the second amendment. They have controlled the gun debate for the past thirty years. Liberals shrink and quiver whenever the gun nuts start hollering that the liberals are coming for their guns. Moderates just shake their heads in disgust for it is all so stupid. All of this has been going on while the public has been baited with the same old wedge issues on abortion, gay rights, and good old American Christianity.

"Colorado State has been following the law, so we have a decade of empirical evidence that says concealed-carry on campus is safe and it doesn't have any of the negative side effects that opponents are imagining will happen now that CU is following the law," Manley said.

"Folks who are concerned about concealed-carry on campus should take a minute to talk to someone at CSU and ask them how has this been. I think they will find it has been a nonissue at CSU."

Colorado State does not allow weapons in residence or dining halls, a policy instituted in 1991, but does allow them elsewhere on campus, school spokesman Mike Hooker said. He said he could not recall any problems as a result.

ERR radio reported the number of legal guns in the past seven to eight years to be stable at 60,000 guns in the hands of 30,000 people, half of them hunters.

Police captain Sven Pierpaas estimated this number to be "optimal."

Estonians are reasonable and balanced, understanding their property, health and life can be maintained by other measures. Purchasing a firearm for self-protection has to be a thoroughly considered decision, said Pierpaas.

Lets start by agreeing to use the Socratic principle, to follow the argument wherever it leads. Setting aside the 2nd Amendment for a moment (yes, I know, heresy, but bear with me), does gun control work? Is it the best place to focus efforts on curbing violence? Do we get the most bang for the buck out of gun control, or should we be investing time, energy and money elsewhere?

Before we blame the tool as a handy scapegoat, it would be useful to look at the science to find out what works. A study titled Would Banning Firearms Reduce Murder and Suicide in the Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy concluded the answer is no.

The number of FBI background checks required for Americans buying guns set a record in December, as the Connecticut school massacre stirred interest in self-defense and prompted renewed talk of limits on firearms, according to FBI data.

The FBI said it recorded 2.8 million background checks during the month, surpassing the mark set in November of 2 million checks. The number was up 49 percent over December 2011, when the FBI performed a then-record 1.9 million checks.

We are told that we need gun-control laws. Sounds good, right? Should we make it illegal for anyone adjudicated to be mentally ill to buy a gun? Let's make it illegal for felons to possess guns. Let's license gun dealers and require the FBI to do a background check on anyone buying a gun from these stores. How about an age restriction on buying guns? Gun shows should have to follow the same laws as everyone else.

All those already are law, and there are some 20,000 additional gun-control laws in the U.S. Before one can rationally call for passage of gun laws, he or she must know what already is covered.

Anti-gun New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg was "half-right" when he told NBC's Jimmy Fallon that there is "scant coverage" of other firearms news, because there is virtually no coverage of self-defense uses every day, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said today.

Bloomberg complained about the lack of attention paid by the press to "people who are killed by guns every day," according to Yahoo News.

We now need to require background checks on the 40 percent of unregulated gun sales that occur at gun shows or over kitchen tables. All gun sales should require a background check run through a licensed gun dealer. Similarly, we should prohibit the sale or transfer of high capacity ammunition clips of the kind used by the shooter at Sandy Hook Elementary. Sorry, no one needs a 30-round magazine clip and an assault rifle to defend their home.

History provides insights into the Second Amendment

There have been people whove ridiculed the protections afforded by the Second Amendment, asking what chance would citizens have against the military might of the U.S. government. Military might isnt always the deciding factor. Our 1776 War of Independence was against the mightiest nation on the face of the earth Great Britain.

In Syria, the rebels are making life uncomfortable for the much-better-equipped Syrian regime. Todays Americans are vastly better-armed than our founders, Warsaw Ghetto Jews and Syrian rebels.

There are about 300 million privately held firearms owned by Americans. Thats nothing to sneeze at. And notice the people who support gun control are the very people who want to control and dictate our lives.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
What is ominous is the ease with which some people go from saying that they don't like something to saying that the government should forbid it. When you go down that road, don't expect freedom to survive very long. Thomas Sowell
