"Gov. Bob Taft signed a bill Thursday to allow Ohioans to carry hidden guns, just one day after lawmakers passed it."
"The bill goes into effect 90 days after it is signed by Taft and is filed with the Ohio Secretary of State."
"The vote marked the first time the Legislature and the governor's office have agreed to a deal after a decade of debate on the highly contentious issue."
"Ohioans who apply for permits to carry concealed weapons would have to pay a fee, undergo background checks and be trained in the use of a weapon."
" 'The goal of concealed carry legislation is to allow law-abiding citizens to protect themselves and their families when they feel their lives may be in danger,' Taft said in a statement." ... -------
That's what people have been trying to get through your thick skull for years, Bob. |

"Residents and law enforcement officials agree that the proposed CCW law for Ohio is a good idea."
"Area residents seem to approve of the idea."
" 'If you look at our history, we have always had guns,' said Lorraine Dingey of Zanesville. 'There has been some violence, but most of the time, people have obeyed the laws. There are some states now that have these laws and allow us to carry weapons.' "
"Ann Todd of Zanesville agreed."
" 'I am for bearing arms,' she said. 'We ought to carry them on airplanes. Right now we are taking guns from the citizens but the robbers and criminals have guns.' "
" 'I am in favor of this law,' said Muskingum County Sheriff Bob Stephenson." ...

The Cleveland Plain Dealer is committed to publishing the names of people who receive concealed weapons permits in Ohio:
"[I]t is this newspaper's intention to obtain this information and publish it. Our readers deserve to know the identities of those who obtain permits to carry their guns in public. We hope other news organizations will do the same in their communities."
The editors of this newspaper can expect a taste of their own medicine.
As soon as they publish permit holders' names, we'll publish the names, phone numbers and home addresses of every single person on staff at the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Same goes for any other newspaper that singles out gun owners in this way.
And we will distribute that data as far and wide as we can, throughout the State of Ohio, through all channels of our influence -- just like these Gun Bigots are threatening to do.
Contemplate other legal ways to make this newspaper regret their commitment to violating the privacy of lawful gun owners. Post comments here; we'll be reading them.
I'm also requesting that people in and around Cleveland begin collecting intel on the staff of the Cleveland Plain Dealer and forwarding it to me immediately. We've got a little time before permits are issued, but we may as well begin preparations for a measured, civil response to these hate-mongers right now. |

"Gov. John G. Rowland took his plight to the people, asking them for a chance to continue as governor while denying that he gave any favors in exchange for gifts now under federal scrutiny."
"The 46-year-old governor gave a six-minute televised speech Wednesday evening and apologized again for lying about the gifts he received in the form of improvements to his Litchfield summer cottage."
" 'Tonight, I humbly ask for a renewed opportunity to earn back your trust, to redeem myself in your eyes and to continue to lead this state,' Rowland said."
"The speech was delivered on the same day a poll by Quinnipiac University found 56 percent of voters surveyed said Rowland should resign - up from 44 percent in a poll released Dec. 17."
"Some lawmakers, including Senate President Pro Tem Kevin Sullivan, D-West Hartford, have called for Rowland to resign. There is some support in the legislature to pursue impeachment. Five newspapers in the state have said in editorials that Rowland should resign." ... |

"Approximately 250 environmental activists and opponents of the war in Iraq rallied outside the Knoxville Convention Center during President Bush's visit Thursday."
"Police contained them in a free-speech zone across the street. It's unlikely Bush even saw them, as they were on a sidewalk opposite the motorcade and past the convention center."
" 'We've been having an incredible time fighting this first amendment zone stuff that we never heard about,' one protestor Tony Delucia told 6 News."

"The U.S. Treasury Department plans to publish nearly 10,000 e-mail addresses on the Web, violating its privacy promise to Americans who used e-mail to comment on a government proceeding."
"In March 2003, the Treasury Department's Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) asked for e-mail comments about a proposal that could raise the price of malt beverages like Bacardi Breezer and Smirnoff Ice. At the time, the department said that the text of comments would be made public--but assured people that e-mail addresses, home addresses and other personal information of individuals would be removed first." ... -------

"Republican Conservatism is dead on the Federal level. It may be a while before real conservatives find out. Nonetheless, look at what neoconservative Republicans are doing: George Bush and his Congressional Republicans are running the largest budget deficits in history. The expected deficit this year is a half-trillion dollars. That's a bit different from the traditional conservative objectives: a balanced budget and a debt-free Republic." |

"Setting aside the stereotyped image of a slave as a bleeding chain-bound wretch, slaves throughout history are often hard to recognize. In some cases, such as the Medieval Serfs, they were held slaves to the rulers by religious belief, and did not see themselves as slaves even though they were treated as such."
"In 2003, however, the chains started to become visible. The Constitutional right to freedom of expression was confined to 'free-speech' zones. A slave may have an opinion, so long as it is not expressed where it might upset the other slaves. The Constitutional right to an armed populace, the means by which the men who set up a nation of free citizens hoped to keep them free, is under constant attack." . . . |

Two men were arrested as they robbed an undertaker's business in Pietermaritzburg, police said on Thursday.
Captain Joshua Gwala said Luke Nkomonde, an employee at Gama Funeral Services, was confronted by two men about 09:00 on Wednesday.
Holding Nkomonde at gunpoint, they demanded the safe keys and searched the drawers in the office, removing two cellphones.
They forced Nkomonde to the back of the premises.
Just then, two policemen attending to a matter nearby saw the commotion and rushed to Nkomonde's aid. They arrested the two suspects and confiscated a licensed firearm.
The suspects will appear in the Pietermaritzburg magistrate's court soon. ---

"Critics of the federal gun registry say the new Liberal cabinet has a perfect opportunity to use a promised review of programs, spending and value-for-money to scrap or radically reform the controversial firearms program."
"But they are not holding their breath."
" 'If this government and its much touted program and spending review do not wrestle this program to the ground, then this whole exercise will be shown to be a charade,' said Manitoba Canadian Alliance MP and justice critic Vic Toews. 'The program is fundamentally flawed and that is not just my judgment but the judgment of the auditor general. But as finance minister, Paul Martin wrote the cheques that kept the registry afloat so I do not expect him to scuttle it now.' " ... |
