These resolutions, to the extent they conflict with state law, lack legal effect: In Tazewell County, Va., for example, the Sanctuary Resolution approved by the board of supervisors purports to prohibit any county employee from enforcing, and any county funds from being used for the enforcement of, new state gun laws the county deems unconstitutional. But Virginia state law prohibits local governments from enacting ordinances or resolutions that are inconsistent with state laws and, more directly, specifically prohibits local governments from regulating firearms.

Hampton city leaders decided not to vote on a resolution that would have supported Second Amendment rights.

The move came after hours of testimony. Supporters of proposed new gun laws cheered the move, while gun rights advocates walked out of the meeting after the decision.

Hampton City Councilwoman Eleanor Weston Brown withdrew the resolution after hearing from people on both sides.

She told News 3, "Regrettably, many misinterpreted the fact that our resolution said that we supported the Second Amendment... that it meant we supported creating a Second Amendment sanctuary. We don't support that."

Colorado seized its first firearm from a citizen just one day after the new red flag law went into effect.

Denver police used the law to keep a gun they had already confiscated from a Colorado man accused of beating his wife and threatening to harm himself. The police got approval from a judge to hold onto two handguns in a petition that was made public this week, The Washington Post reported.

Among the measures being considered by Colorado Democrats for the 2020 legislative session is a so-called safe storage law requiring that firearms be locked in a safe when not in use. Like many gun control laws, safe storage requirements may sound reasonable at first blush, but in practice are unnecessary, counterproductive, and unconstitutional.

Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont., introduced a pro-Second Amendment bill to the Senate last month aimed at easing restrictions on gun owners transporting their firearms across state lines.

The bill would reform the Firearm Owners Protection Act (FOPA), clarifying the term transport to include staying in temporary lodging overnight, stopping for food, fuel, vehicle maintenance, an emergency, medical treatment, and any other activity incidental.

Daines said Americans should not be afraid to transport their legally owned firearms.

That isn't enough for some, who have taken the Republican judge-executive to task on social media threads for not supporting Henderson as an outright "Second Amendment sanctuary."

A recent Facebook response to the judge's reasoning, for example, ended with one writer asking pointedly: "Bradley Schneider do you stand for or against Henderson County becoming 2A Sanctuary? A simple 'for' or 'against' answer is all I'm asking."

A delegate, voted in to the General Assembly in the latest election, has introduced a bill to remove a statute prohibiting "law-abiding gun owners" the ability to carry a firearm in a place of worship with a valid concealed carry.

Currently, Virginia law prohibits any person to carry a gun, pistol, bowie knife, dagger or other dangerous weapon, without good and sufficient reason, to a place of worship.

The law has been challenged in court, and in 2013 a panel of three judges on the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals found that the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms is not impermissibly burdened by Marylands good and substantial reason requirement. However, in 2017, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit found that a nearly identical good reason requirement in D.C. law was unconstitutional. In its Wrenn decision, the court concluded that the law-abiding citizens right to bear common arms must enable the typical citizen to carry a gun.

Monroe Countys representative in the Tennessee House believes a new gun permit will enhance personal protection for many state residents.

A new state law became effective last Wednesday that allows Tennesseans easier and less expensive access to a concealed carry handgun permit. Last May, the state Legislature approved a bill that provides a second tier of gun ownership to state residents. The new law gives Tennesseans the option to purchase a concealed carry permit for $65 without a requirement for any hands-on training. Instead, a 90-minute online course is all that is required to qualify for the newly-established permit.

With the start to the new legislative session in the General Assembly Wednesday, major changes could be on the way in Virginia, including new gun laws.

It was largely a day of ceremony and pleasantries, but the drama is expected to begin soon.

Dozens of people supporting gender equality demonstrated outside the capitol, pushing for the Equal Rights Amendment, which is one in a long list of proposals from Democrats like Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
America does not go abroad in search of monsters to destroy. She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all. She well knows that by one enlisting under other banners than her own, were they even the banners of foreign independence, she would involve herself beyond the power of extrication in all the wars of interest and intrigue, of individual avarice, envy and ambition, which assume the colors and usurp the standards of freedom. JOHN QUINCY ADAMS (1821)
